“Could be a beautiful hotel, needs a LOT of work”
Reviewed 27 October 2010

We stayed here during a convention. We expected the hotel to be a nicer place - maybe on par with a Marriott or Hyatt, but with some old-time charm. We were very disappointed. Before all of the other reviewers bash me for expecting too much, let me say that I had no problem with the vintage or appointment of the rooms. I was disappointed as to how poorly they have been maintained. This hotel COULD be a beautiful place to stay, with a little work. New beds and updated bathrooms would be great. Our room had two worn out twin beds pushed together - we walked in and found both beds sagging severely in the middle. Our bathroom door hit the tile floor and was very difficult to open fully. A piece of molding on the ceiling was hanging, about ready to fall off. Someone had smashed a bug in the sheer drapes... and the remains had not been cleaned. The carpet in the stairwells and hallways should have been replaced in the 1980's, as it is filthy and worn out. The lobby furniture is completely worn out. The wireless internet only worked in the lobby. The breakfast was horrible. From what I understand, 20 rooms have been renovated. Obviously, we didn't get one of those! Parking in Italy is difficult. We were directed to a free lot by the staff that was 1/2 mile away.

Hotel Splendide could be a very charming, historic place to stay, with lots of character. Too bad it isn't.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Hotel Excelsior Splendide and enjoyed it very much. The hotel although 19th. century is well appointed and is in the absolute best position to explore Bellagio.Right on the footpath across from Lake Como and close to the ferry stops(note that some of the hotels and apartments require long walks and many cobblestone stairs!)We were fortunate to have a lake view which was an added bonus. The breakfast room is very large and the food very adequate although do not eat dinner here it is terrible and there is an enormous choice of very good restaurants handy anyway.Internet access was available at a rate of 5 euros for 3 days which is extremely good value.

We travelled to Bellagio for a 4 night stay at the Excelsior Splendide at the beginning of September. We flew to Milan via Easy Jet and then took a train to Saronno, changed there for Como and then got the fast ferry to Bellagio. From Milan to Bellagio took roughly 3 1/2 hours but it was fun and very easy. Bellagio is a lovely little down ideally placed to travel to the other mid-lake towns via the very frequent ferry service. It has lots of little streets filled with shops and small cafes/restaurants and has a lovely atmosphere. The Excelsior is in a great position on the lake front so make sure you get a lake view room. The hotel itself needs some love and attention. The main entrance lobby when you first enter looks impressive but as you climb the marble staircaset the plants are wilted and the carpet needs throwing away. We had a lake view room but the corridor outside our room at night was very dark and when we first went to the room the corridor was in complete darkness and the automatic light did not come on until we were almost at our room door - very dangerous as there were steps involved! The room itself was ok, it was a refurbished room but that wasnt obvious really. The bedding was very dull and the room lacked the comfy factor but it was ok. It had a great view of the lake which was the main thing we wanted. The shower was ok as well. The breakfast was ok but it was a bit disappointing when it could be so much better. There is a coffee/tea machine which had horrible coffee. You had to be careful where you sat or the waiter got very 'fawlty towers' about it which after a while was amusing but at first a bit alarming! I think if you were half board you got to sit nearer the window but you definitely couldnt sit at an available table, the waiter always directed us to the back of the room even if there was an empty table next to the window. One morning there was quite a commotion when an American couple demanded to sit at the window despite the waiter pointing to the back of the room and there was lots of hushed but obvious arguing and tooing and froing and gesticulation until the couple got their way. (very entertaining) . There was two types of cereal, cheese, boiled eggs (no egg cups) and sponge cake. There was also yoghurt and fruit. The staff on the desk were helpful. We visited Tremezzo, Veradero (particularly lovely) and Lenno and it was all very easy. There are different types of ferries the most expensive being the fast ferry. It is lovely to watch the ferries arriving and departing as they seem to be every few minutes. We had two days of continuous rain and then a thunderstorm to finish it off before seeing some warm sun but it didnt detract from the holiday. On the way home we had the return journey to Milan airport but this time we took the bus which leaves just a few yards from the Excelsior. It took 1 hour 10 minutes to get back to Milan but only cost 5 1/2 euros for the two of us! (The fast ferry had cost us 25 euros for the two of us) and it is equally as picturesque keeping to the lake side all the way back and virtually empty as well. We had a lovely time at Lake Como and if we went back I would definitely stay in Bellagio again as it had more shops/restaurants than the other towns we visited. Travelling to and from Malpensa airport was also very easy and you see a lot of Italy on the way.

We loved the hotel. The staff was more than helpful, and the room was perfect for a family. The views of the lake at night where outstanding. We loved the location, and the pool was perfect after a day in the heat. We would definitely stay there again.

Stayed here for a wonderful 10 days. The hotel is a charming 19th C gem in the heart of Bellagio with the huge pleasure of private garden and swimming pool- invaluable in the heatwave we experienced. We requested a room at the back of the hotel, for quiet, but our original room was very hot. As soon as we inquired about a cooler room, though, we were immediately offered one with air-conditioning, newly redecorated, with which we were delighted. We stayed half-board and, as foodies, were slightly concerned about what to expect but were extremely impressed by the deceptively simple but entirely authentic cuisine. Above all, though, it would be difficult to give enough praise to all the staff who were, without exception, genuinely friendly and endlessly helpful.

This hotel does not quite live up to it's name...yet. Hotel is positioned in the centre of Bellagio overlooking Lake Como. Only 20 rooms are newly renovated and have air-conditioning...be sure to request one of these rooms and you should have a pleasant enough stay. The newer rooms are clean, well lit and very nice. We were initially placed in a non-renovated room: hot, dimly lit and dirty. I initially tried to move to another hotel, but all were booked up. The shower had black mold and the bathroom looked worn and dirty as did the room overall. Fortunately, the hotel staff did move us the next day to a newer room and put us in a room with lake view, Breakfast consisted of a buffet-style (continental) setup that was not great: coffee machine kept breaking down; hard boiled eggs not properly cooked, rolls dry. I am basing my overall--atings on staying in the newer cleaner rooms so gave an overall "average" rating (if staying in the older room I would have to rate "poor".

I have to totally honest with you, On reading the previous reviews of this hotel my heart was filled with dread and a certain amount of fear but i shouldn't and nor should you take any notice of some of the previous reviews.
On arriving at the hotel (we travelled from Como to Bellagio by bus) i was instantly hit with the beautiful location the hotel was situated, looking straight out over Lake Como.
The lobby to the hotel is special and is filled with sofa's and chairs which are in keeping with the style of the hotel.
We were allocated a Lake view room on the 1st floor which was massive and had a large double bed and 2 single beds, the bathroom was a good size as well.
The breakfast we received was ample and plentiful, on each table there is a basket with bread or rolls, there is also a an area in the corner of the dining room which has a good selection of cold meats, cheese, cereals, cakes / croissants, Yoghurts and finally fruit.
There is also a juice dispenser and a hot drinks dispenser which i have to agree the coffee is terrible but the hot chocolate was very nice as was the tea.
I found the staff very helpful even when i managed to lock the safe in the room and forgot what number i had entered, nothing was too much trouble for them.
We came early season and it was very quiet which was a benefit as we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
In front of the hotel is the ferry terminal which has ferries going all over Lake Como, we bought a day ticket at travelled all over the centre of the lake which was brilliant.
All in all we all had a wonderful time and i would recommend this hotel and i will definitely return in the future
