“Fantastic hospitality and great find at Lake Como”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

Having arrived at Lake Como with no accommodation for the night, we were directed to the Locanda Maria by another hotel which was fully booked. What a find that was.

It was actually difficult to locate the property at first, there's not much signage out front and parking is not right out front, but I think that's the charm - it's a B&B in the middle of a small village with not a lot of tourists. It didn't matter anyway as the owner came looking for us! He was extremely helpful with everything and had great pride for his property and also enthusiastic about his local region.

The building is completely renovated recently, everything shiny and new, yet retains the Italian character. We had a suite on the top level which was magnificient, and views over the rooftops to Lake Como.

Breakfast was extraordinarily good compared to others we'd had on this trip. The crossiant was freshly baked and everything else felt fresh.

It's such a shame we only had 1 night to spend there ...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in September. Overall, we were very happy with our stay!

The owner, Bruno, is a very effective, jolly host. He was very helpful in calling a taxi for us twice during our stay and speaks very good English. We also ate in his son's restaurant in Bellagio (La Lanterna) for dinner one night and it was very good (and reasonable) as well.

The hotel is located a bit outside Bellagio, in a "hamlet" called San Giovanni. If you are looking for a hotel on the waterfront in Bellagio, this is not it. However, the walk to/from Bellagio is only around 15 minutes, and during the summer months up until the end of September, the lake ferry stops at the San Giovanni port, which is literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Bruno was very helpful in giving us a ferry timetable and we had no problems catching the ferry from San Giovanni for a short (5 minute) ferry ride into Bellagio.

Our room was very clean and comfortable. The complementary breakfast is very good - croissants, meat, cheese, fruit, juice, coffee - definitely all that you need for a European breakfast.

I would definitely stay here again, especially during the summer season when the ferry is running.

Just back from a wonderful stay at Locanda della Maria in San Giovanni outside Bellagio. The accommodation was newly done and we were very happy with our spacious room
complete with air con and fridge. The owner Bruno was so helpful and accommodating. Great breakfast every morning of freshly baked rolls & croissants, ham, cheese, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, etc. It is literally a minutes walk from the lake and the San Giovanni ferry stop; or a 20 minute stroll from Bellagio town. We ate at Bruno's son restaurant in Bellagio town twice and it is well worth a visit, the food is simple but tasty. Got to make use of Locanda's private beach one afternoon and whilst the area itself was very small it was clean, sun loungers were provided and your own private view of Lake Como was spectacular. It is a beautiful part of the world. Would highly recommend and look forward to staying there again.

We were so pleased to have found this little hotel run by the exceptionally efficient Bruno! Its about 20 to 30 minute walk from Bellagio and is a stones throw from the Lake. There is a cafe/pub a few yards away and is a lovely quiet spot to enjoy a few days.
The accommodation was air conditioned and came with a fridge. Breakfast is good and although self service, Bruno is on hand to cater for anything that you need. Croissants and bread rolls are freshly baked each morning and were just superb. There is ham, cheese, cereals, fruit, toast and jam as well as unlimited tea and coffee.
Bellagio is lovely but its nice to stay in a quieter spot. We ate at La Lanterna run by Bruno's son and daughter in law and can recommend this too. As vegetarians, eating sometimes can be limiting but they were very accommodating and his son speaks very good English. The cake which changes daily was some of the best I have tasted.
We travelled via Milan and Varenna and made use of the boats which criss cross the lake all day every day.
A place to recommmend!!

We took 2 rooms which converted to a 2 room suite when closing the corridor door at night. That way we were sure our children would find us at night when they are waking up disoriented.
The rooms had no numbers but a name; both had Operas names (Aida & Tosca).
We had a very nice and helpfull Hotel keeper with a strict working hours but I had no problem reaching him on phone when I was confused operating something in the room.

The breakfast had various things to choose and you could assemble a nutritious meal but we terribly missed eggs and vegetables.

Car park can be found a minute walk at the piazza close to the Marina or 3 min. away through the north adjacent alley.
Mind that this area is difficult to drive in a family car since the roads are very narrow and often you have to stop and give way to cars travelling on the opposite direction in curves. (you would not be able to fully enjoy the beautiful view driving along Commo Lake but your family will).

5 min. drive to Bellagio gives you many dining options and night as well as mornings strolling.
In here as well mind the restricted driving areas (2 major car parks at city center are enough)
