Well ... I guess part of my disappointment is that I ate at Alle Darsene di Loppia the night before ... and this place just isn't in the same league. The prices are the same, but the cooking just doesn't cut it. They failed to achieve balance on every course except my son's veal, which was good. Everything else was either too sweet, or too salty or too sour, or, in the case of the fillet of fish with cheese and citrus crumb, just overcooked into a state of dryness. Someone in the kitchen had spilled the salt cellar into the accompanying zucchini. Inexplicably, they served the foie gras with a brioche so crumbly it fell apart before you could load anything on it and so many overly sweet accompaniments, they could have caused a sugar coma had I been so unwise as to eat them. The wine they served with this dish was beautiful and is the sole reason I've given them 3 instead of 2. Don't get talked into ordering the Prosecco.

We were staying close by to Silvios so, as a family of four adults decided to pay a visit and could hardly have been less impressed: with the food, with the service.

After being seated in the dated and rather too formal hotel dining room we were offered a cheerful glass of prosecco (which we were later less cheerfully to discover was not a generous welcome but a shameless and sneaky up-sell which would appear on our bill). Soon after arriving we ordered our food which arrived promptly.

The antipasti of various lake fish is certainly various; some good, some bad, but all eventually moulding into one fish ménage which tastes mostly of pickle and fish leather with parsley sauce. The parsley sauce is good but at 19 euros, hardly rescues the dish.

The burrata with eggplant is almost totally free of taste or character, a sandwich interior taken from a deli in Anywhereville and far too sweet.

Foie Gras is good. It's accompaniment of stale brioche however, not so much.

Citrus gratin catch of the day with
bergamot, meanwhile, is bone dry and completely bergamot free. Vegetables on the side are pretty dreary but so over seasoned they negate the need for salt on the table which is a bonus for the evening.

Chocolate mousse has a corporate tang: a charity-dinner desert made for 200 with more than a hint of coagulant flour or some other nameless setting agent. Creme brûlée is plucked straight from the chiller, blowtorched and served still chiller-cold.

Ravioli with lake fish and butter is enjoyed by all and my brother enjoyed his lion of veal (repeat same dreary vegetables). But one good piece of veal doth not a review sustain and a final glass of red wine ordered to enjoy with the veal on recommendation of the waiter is sharp, young and opened yesterday.

To round off the evening a request for an Irish coffee is met with zealous dismissal from the clearly offended waitsatff. In hindsight we should have realised sooner that we are in Italy and not in Ireland and everyone knows you can only get whisky and cream in Ireland. Our bad.

On the plus side, besides this and the sly Prosecco, staff were quite friendly and efficient. The view was good

Ultimately, at 200 euros for a table of 4 with 1 bottle of wine Silvios was a great disappointment and best avoided. Infinitely inferior to the very nearby Alle Darsene Di Loppia where the food is fantastic and the staff incredibly helpful, upfront and generous.

Finally, in anticipation of another overly defensive reply from Silvios in response to a poor review I'd like to finish up by adding that, yes, I could have mentioned my dissatisfaction during the meal but frankly I didn't feel that any attempt to address it would have resulted in better food or service. The experience was nothing if not consistent and I preferred to save myself the energy which is my prerogative as a paying customer.

Restaurante Silvio serves the best food in Bellagio. This was the considered verdict of our informant - another hotelier in the town ! Set a little way from the town - and you'll need a car or a taxi to get there safely by road - the Silvio specialises in lakefish cooked the authentic ways. The wide choice of wines on offer run from the middle value range to the astonomical. And with a terrace overlooking the water it all makes for a magical experience - particularly on a warm summer evening. And if you don't want to drive, the restaurant has its own free car service
- for which much thanks Albert ! We'd never have got home without you.

We ate here on our honeymoon and the food was great, coupled with some fantastic service staff! The view is also worth the visit...

We had a family lunch in this restaurant (2 adults + 2 kids coming in the afternoon in the beginning of July, dinning inside the restaurant - that is specifically for Silvio96, Front Desk at Ristorante Silvio who responded to another review a few weeks ago). The steak was fine, pasta was average, the vegetable soup was so-so and the fish was just terrible. We got an impression that the food was not cooked but just heated. In addition, they brought us all the courses we ordered at once (i.e. soups together with meat, pasta and fish) not leaving us a chance to enjoy our meals hot & fresh.

Overall, we were very disappointed - it looks like almost no relation between the reviews here and the real food quality. The only thing came true is the beautiful view to the lake, but be sure - it is not unique for this area, And yes, the prices are a bit higher than in most similar places in Bellagio (which are not cheap either). The service was friendly, although...
