B&B Osteria Cattaneo
Ranked #20 of 58 Como B&B and Inns
Reviewed 9 August 2012

Firstly, communication with the owner was almost impossible and we sent 5 emails when trying to book, none of which was answered. Perhaps we should have given up then, but an Italian speaking friend confirmed the reservation for us by phone.
The location is not that good if you do not have your own transport and it's a fair walk and/or bus ride into Como. Breakfast is poor and nothing is fresh, not even bread (we stayed 4 nights).
However, the place is clean (although outside is very untidy) and the rooms are a good size.
The website states that all credit cards are accepted. Rubbish! The owner insisted on cash and so we had to make an unplanned visit to the cashpoint for the euro's. It also says that checkout is 12.00. Wrong again! We had to be out by 10.00am.
The website also says that staff are happy to make local reservations (car hire, museums etc) on behalf of guests. Not in our experience! We wanted help to book taxi's (not speaking Italian, we hoped that the owners would book for us) but were just given a phone number and no offer to help.
I would not recommend the Osteria, other than for the odd night if you were stuck. I know Como reasonably well and there are many better located and better value places than this.

We stayed here for one night on our way to Tuscany. Temperatures were extremely high and sadely enough there was no air conditioning... When indicating this to our host, he just said that we had chosen to come in summer and so we knew it would be hot. OK, but if you are already tyried from a whole day, a cool bedroom would be nice. Lots of details were still to be fixed all over the B&B. We stayed at the Family Room, which was a nice large room with ensuite bathroom. We also had a terrace at our disposal... It was a shame we couldn't use it since the table and chairs were not clean. On top of that there stood an old bathtub on the terrace, which should have been already trown at the bin... Breakfast was very basic. Although we think this B&B has a lot of potential, at the moment it is overpriced. We think there are many more nice alternatives in Como on your way to the south.

We stayed at this b&b for a single night. We were pleased with the warm welcome given by our host.

+ Wifi was free, room was clean, rather new and of decent size. Location was ok in a quiet part of Como (you'll need a car to get to the centre) Parking was free

- bed was not comfortable, no air-conditioning. The breakfast was a big disappointment. Poor choice of food and coffee was not that great.

Would recommend it only for a single night

We stayed here for one night based on the glowing reviews from other travellers on TripAdvisor. Our stay was not that pleasant. It is too bad that I have to rate this B&B low as it has potential. It looks very new, in fact a few things are not quite finished yet, but we did not sleep well at all.

Our room faced the street and the traffic is less than a metre away. There wasn't a lot of traffic but even with the window closed every car and motorcycle that went by sounded like it was coming through our room. And being that we had the window closed to try to keep out the noise, it was stifling hot all night as there is no a/c or fans in the room. Also, the way in which the B&B is designed, the sound from the rooms above echos throughout the place.

This B&B is about a 10 minute bus ride, or 35 minute walk to town centre. We also had bad luck corresponding with the B&B. Before our arrival we emailed trying to get information about payment terms, how best to get to the B&B, and if we could check in early or leave our bags. None of our emails were answered. Note: They only take cash.

On the positive side, it was clean, and has free wi-fi.

Overall, we would not stay here again and would not recommend to others.

We picked this hotel because of its location, its free parking and its 24/7 reception desk. Because of traffic, we arrived quite late (after 23:00), and the owner was still quite enjoyable and helpful (as we don't speak Italian, we communicated mostly in smiles and friendly gestures). The room was large, clean and original, and there was a nice sitting area in which we could relax after a long drive. Breakfast in the morning consisted of strong, strong coffee, pastries, juice and yogurt. I had expected a bit more, but it could have also been limited because of the fact we had to eat at 7:30 to leave and catch our ferry in Livorno. I would fully recommend this great, small B and B!

My mum and I stayed one night at the Osteria Cattaneo in August with my three kids and our small dog. They managed to squeeze us all in the the ground floor room (very comfortably) and we felt very welcome from the moment we got there.
The room is brilliantly decorated and the bathroom/wet room is probably the coolest you'll ever use! Breakfast is served in the dining room, which can seem a bit dated, but food is plentiful and there's a fridge full of nice food which was offered to our kids!
There's a very unpretentious restaurant nearby which serves good dishes at a very reasonable price.
Although there is no view of the lake from the Osteria, it is only a very short drive away. Also, when we were there, a swimming pool was being built which will make it a really great place to stay in the future.
Simone, his girlfriend and his mum are perfect hosts; as we were about to drive away Simone even handed us a big jar of honey from his very own beehives!
We would definitely recommend Osteria Cattaneo!

What a beautiful little hotel. The rooms are all individual and decorated with Art. Not a regular hotel, rather a place like home. Simone, the BB hotel owner and staff were very welcoming. Would stay again. The Wapshott's;)
