Sormano is a small village in the hills above Lake Como, about 20 km S of Bellagio, or 20 km E of Nesso. Not a very likely destination for visitors to the Lake Como region, but we wanted to hike the 'Dorsale del Triangolo Lariano' (Lake Como Triangle ridge walk) from Como to Bellagio, a 45 km mountain path normally walked in 10/14 hours over two days. So we needed a place to overnight about midway through the walk. After consulting maps and the (not many) resources available on the web, I called the Miravalle Hotel, which appeared to be located not far from the trail, and made a reservation there.
We found out that the hotel is in fact located approx. 5 km far from the trail, but were able to hitch a ride.
The hotel appears not to have changed much from its heyday --circa 1960. Rooms are clean, but small, with drab old furniture, and tiny bathrooms. As to the hotel's restaurant, they have pizzas on weekends (which looked promising), but we chose something else, and deeply regretted our choice. I didn't think you could get cold and overcooked pasta in Italy -- well, we managed to get that! A truly horrible meal. Breakfast in the morning was just tea or coffee with packaged brioches. On top of eveything else, we could not pay by credit card because ''the machine was out of order".
Only positive note: the manager gave us a ride back to the trail.
