I ate alone in this beautiful restaurant amongst the labrynth of tiny streets in gorgeous Varenna....I have eaten at Mon Amour 3 times over the years, and truly believe that this is a poor choice in Varenna...My triple header refers to a truly epic experience last night...Friendly waiters headed me upstairs to the loft in this modern restaurant loaded with steel and glass in a remarkable stone walled ground floor of an old, historic building...all good so far...The menu presented was the first problem, the wine list the second problem... To have only Sea Food at a lake restaurant is just weird...especially as we have great fish, Lake Perch( Pesce Persico) and Lavarello come to mind....So no local items on the menu and Seafood 100+ miles from the sea...OK...lets see how good the food is and keep an open mind...
But the Wine List, was a shock, not one wine from the Valtellina, our local wine valley just at the edge of Lake Como, that produces excellent wine...or wines from Franciacorta, another great local wine growing area...instead we had wines, indeed from the North of Italy, in every area BUT where the Restaurant is located...and these wines were not exactly cheap, nor were they from recognizable vineyards at these prices....but, again, if what wine they serve is good does it really matter that in a village they serve food and wine that does not reflect the location or traditions of the area...

However the meal was terrible, The waiter broke the cork off in the bottle explaining that it was the extra long corks fault and that the only real corks made in Italy come from Sardegna, and that this cork was not one of them....As I watched his technique he bent the cork instead of inserting the corkscrew further into the cork to extract it...When you bend the cork while still inserted in the bottle guess what...it should bend a bit!... It should not spap off like it did...it was a dry cork, indicating misstorage...usually a sign the bottle was left standing upright..but this bottle indicated far more about the wine cellar in this restaurant...a bad bottle of wine( corked/Tapo ) can happen to any restaurant...but a dry cork plus this bottles problem of being oxidized means that this bottle was not stored correctly and allowed to attain temperatures too high to maintain the quality of the wine...explaining parts one and two of my triple header....
BUT the real problem was the food, the Risotto was dry and without flavor...no creaminess, it looked, well, like rice, and in fact thats what it was...rice with ingredients added...I think it was prepared before and heated up...
The main course I had, in Varenna, would have to be decent, as Varenna has the best supplier of meat this side of Milan...every restaurant in town and the local butcher Pietro, has killer beef...except 2 weeks ago at the newly reopened Cavatapi, without Star Chef Mario, and here at Monamour...in fact it was so full of gristle that I could not eat 1/2 of it...the stench of the oxidized wine and pile of spat out beef on my plate went unnoticed by the waitstaff.... I could hear them conversing together over the video they were watching on the cash register computer screen...
Strike 3....with over 500 meals in Varenna over 15 years, this was the worst, and would not comment if this was a first experience with this restaurant...
I think that going to 4 Passe would be far better than here...or the Victoria Grill or the Victoria Lake Front Restaurant...even better the Bella Vista at the Hotel Milano.

Cordiali saluti.
Il tempo è galantuomo.

The food at mon amour might appear simple, but the flavors are remarkable.
Mon amour is known best for his seafood, and the delicious napoletanos pastiera and pastries.
The staff is very friendly, reasonable prices. I'm sure to return soon.
Highly recommended

We stopped in for dinner on a Wed evening. Apparenlty they just filled the upstair tables with customers and put us downstairs. The downstairs is very lovely and we had the room to oursleves. Unfortuantely, not even the one waiter on staff that night joined us. That is not true, he did come occassionally but it was the slowest service we have ever endured. The waiter was very apologetic and understood our frustration and deducted our glasses of wine from the bill. The food was very good, I recall, but unfortuantely the slow service is what stuck with us. Hpoefully the table upstairs had more responsive service.

A stylish venue but a bad meal. Very slow service -understaffed. Poor food - wild boar almost inedible; crispy prawns tasteless - recommended wine (Inferno) indifferent and over-priced. Worst dining experience during a fortnight in Italy.

Varenna Mon Amour is a restaurant in the older part of the town of Varenna which is found in a romantic alleyway. The food and wine was good and our experience there was on the whole pleasant. There seemed to be a rather limited waiter service but the ambience was quite nice. I would rate it as one of the better restaurants in Varenna as it is not too touristic and it's a good place for an evening out and a romantic dinner. The food itself was very good although on the expensive side.
