This hotel is perfectly situated with a view in every direction from the terrace . We had a room above the terrace so we had a breathtaking view from our small balcony. We were on the third floor. This part of the building had no elevator but the rooms are perfeclty located. A small sacrifice for the view. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The staff was terrific. The breakfast was more than adequate. Tasty croissants, sweets, eggs, cheeses, meats etc. Varrenna has very good restaurants and is convenient by ferry to the other towns on the lake. I highly recommend this boutique hotel.

This hotel was our first stop in our family vacation in Italy. I wished we had ended here in order to wind down from the hectic nature of the large cities. Instead, we started here, and were mesmerized with the charm of Varenna, the beauty of the hotel's location and the hotel itself. The room well suited our family of four with a king sized bed in the loft and two twins downstairs. Huge picture window overlooked the lake. The room was not fancy by any standard, in fact, rather spartan, but it was clean and comfortable, and quiet. The air conditioning worked well. A tiny but clean and functional bathroom rounded out the room. (Europe seems to like small shower stalls.) The staff were always kind, pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was served in a windowed area that overlooked the lake. Heavenly. Breakfast was good with tasty scrambled eggs and a variety of meats, cheeses and pastries. Just right, just enough without being overdone or lacking anything. Coffee, any type at your request. We didn't want to leave the breakfast room. The elevator is tiny and doesn't quite always go up to the room (depending on the location) but it was only a matter of a few steps and we got well used to schlepping luggage. The bill was accurate, check out was efficient. We loved it. Peaceful and quiet, off the town square. Everything was walkable. Great restaurants abound in the city. I'd go back there in a heartbeat and skip the rest of the country.

Room Tip: A balcony would really ice the cake but I don't believe they had that available for the quad room.

This is our last stop after Stresa, Pisa, Siena, Firenze, Verona, Venezia, Padova, Milano. Varenna is very peaceful and quiet. It is the only Italian town where there is no need to look behind you (to check if you are being followed). There is no crowds for pickpockets to mingle in. Hotel du Lac is the top rated hotel and deservedly so. Staff are among the friendiest and most helpful. Our room has partial lake view but we chose it for elevator access. For better view, I took perfect pictures from hotel terrace at sunset and in the early morning. Only complaint is that we did not have good weather during most of our stay but that is something we cannot control but it provides good excuse to return.

Is this where the term ‘comatose’ originates from? It is so relaxing and peaceful here. This beautiful 12 room hotel is right on Lake Como. The terrace where breakfast and lunch is served has a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. We were in room #30 which is close to the elevator -- very convenient to get to/from the parking garage but could be a bit problematic if people leave noisily in the morning (wasn't for us). Room 30 is a good size and has a private covered terrace and an attenuated view of the lake – other rooms have fuller views of the lake. The sheets and pillows are of high quality linens. It is very easy to rest and relax here! The public area is very large and the staff very attentive and helpful.

This is a small 17 room hotel run with a welcome and very personal touch. The location is absolutely stunning and the best you’ll find anywhere. If it was any closer to the lake, you’d be in it! Our host was always very friendly and especially helpful on arrival - our luggage delivered promptly to our room, 24 on the top floor, which had sweeping views of the lake in every direction – in a word – spectacular!

The twin bedded room fitted with individual duvets (which we like) whilst not particularly spacious was more than adequate with plenty of storage space and even room for a small sofa. It’s nicely if simply furnished without being austere with a nice quality feel about it all including a high quality marble floor. The 4 piece bathroom is compact and has a lovely easy to use shower – far preferable to a bath.

One of the main features of the hotel is the position of its dining room which extends out onto the open air terrace directly overlooking the sweeping views of the lake in every direction and the snow capped mountains of Switzerland in the distance. It’s a great place to have breakfast, afternoon tea, relax and unwind with a cocktail or just read a book. Most of the time we were there whenever I used it I had it all to myself – it’s a lovely place to relax and watch the comings and goings on the lake with the option of sitting under the lovely and very effective awning if you want to avoid direct sunlight. It’s all so peaceful – and just perfect.

Not many visitors bring a car here but if you’ve got one as we had, the hotel also has a car park – invaluable in Varenna – but beware the tight access if like us, you’ve been allocated a large hire car!

There aren’t many hotels in the world I would want to come back to but this is one of them. Highly recommended.
