Our family had three room in this delightful hotel for two nights. We were each pleased with our accommodations and the warm welcome we received from Laura and her staff. We had lunch and dinner at the hotel resteraunt, being served pleasing meals on both occasions. We are looking forward to our next visit.

This is a great hotel in Varenna. Easy walk from train station and across the street from the ferry to Bellagio etc. Rooms are in good shape and clean. Laura, the manager was a great resource for ideas of what to do as well as predicting the weather. The dinner in their restaurant was like a home cooked meal!

This hotel is close to the train station and to the ferry which make it very convenient. The owner, Laura, swept us off our feet when we arrived the first evening. She did not even have us check in but insisted we just go up to see our lovely room and then come down for dinner---we were starved! The room was lovey, bright yellow with antique looking furniture...very homey and comfortable. Dinner was WONDERFUL! We ate all our dinners there during our stay and breakfast too. The meals were fresh and had the feeling of eating at your family table. When it came time to leave there were long hugs goodbye with Laura ; she even ran back into the hotel before we left and sent us off with a bottle of wine! Lake Como is beautiful and was made even more beautiful by our delightful hostess and charming hotel stay.

Stayed here for three nights. People have talked about the staff not being friendly. I found the woman at the desk nice in an opinionated grandmother way.

I had room 1. It had a great bed. (The couple on the top floor said they had a terrible bed and no water pressure) mine was quite new. Room 1 is obviously the handicap renovated room. The bathroom looked new. The rest of the room was fine and matched the age of the hotel.

The temp had dropped the day I arrived so the heat was on. Unfortunately there must be a master switch. The heat would run from 5 pm to 11, but then shut off till 7 am. Got a little cold.

Also, there is an older woman "book keeper" who sat down in the caffe and would start smoking every night around 10PM. I seeps in under the old doors. I laid towels on the floor to block it.

So if you're a non-smoker beware.

Also, they skimp on certain things. The couple at breakfast beside me asked for a double shot in their cappuccino. They were informed that breakfast only came with one and there would be a charge for two...felt cheap.

The views were great, but there was a feeling that guests were a mild inconvenience.

Stayed in the adjacent Villa to the hotel and our party rented 3 rooms for 2 nights. The owner, Laura, was helpful, fun and charming throughout our stay. Rooms were perfect with large bathrooms and roomy verandas. Villa does not have an elevator but hotel does. We ate at the hotel restaurant and received special treatment. The location was perfect. Short walk to the town and the ferry was outside the door. We would recommend this hotel and villa for those looking for a real taste of Italy. Laura saw to it that we received coffee and a sweet roll for breakfast when we had to catch the train at 6:00am. If you have a question on anything ask Laura. She is not bashful on giving her opinion, have fun with her-she's a fun lady.

Room Tip: Villa second floor. Laura will probaly show you what's available.

We chose this hotel because TripAdvisor reviewers described it as different from the standard hotel experience. They were right, and we were charmed and delighted by our too-brief stay of three nights. From its landmark status, right on the lake by the ferry terminal, to its eclectically decorated rooms and almost homely atmosphere, Hotel Olivedo is a special place. Much of that specialness is due to a person rather than a building: Laura, the often remarked upon owner. From the outset, she makes arriving guests feel they’re being welcomed into her home – and they are. As Laura says, she was ‘born and raised here’ and is the third generation of her family to run the Olivedo. Her attitude towards her guests is warm, personal and helpful. It is surely very rare that checkout is concluded with a kiss!

Our second floor room was spacious, clean, furnished with interesting antiques, and had a little balcony looking over the lake. Effective double-glazing shut out noise from the ferries and tour buses outside. The bathroom was modern and had an excellent shower. As others have commented, the hotel’s elevator is one of the Olivedo’s eccentric features but at least it’s there, however slowly it moves. Stairs might otherwise be difficult for people with mobility problems.

During our stay meals were served on the lakeside terrace, also a pleasant spot for a coffee, gelato or prosecco between meals. We found the breakfast was minimal but perfectly adequate with juice, fresh fruit, yoghurts, sliced meat and cheese, croissants, bread and excellent coffee. But the food at dinner was so good we ate there every night – the grilled lake fish, the roasted chicken with rosemary, the superb roast potatoes, all simply and perfectly cooked. With a jug of the good house wine, these were meals to remember.

Would most definitely stay here again, and highly recommend the Hotel Olivedo to those who would enjoy true hospitality in a place with character, as an alternative to bland and impersonal hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with lake view.
