“do I have stories to tell”
Reviewed 24 March 2009

this is my first review on any of our trips to Europe but felt compelled to share our story. we were a group of friends traveling and just returned from Europe 2 weeks ago. Varenna was our last stop on our journey. Hotel Olivedo has a wonderful location. BUT please before you decide to stay there let me earn you that you have to be ready emotional and fisically. we made the booking with Laura and even sent out payment via wire from bank to bank, all she asked we agreed to do. when we arrived we had rooms facing the Lake with that breathtaking view that just captivates but was to come was even more captivating. upon waking up on our first day we had no running hot water and i had to wake her up and inform her i was quickly repromanded for trying to shower too early and informed that the hot water tank was empty and their would be No hot water till 9 am. we could not decide ourselves when to shower she wanted us to shower at her convenience and expected us from then on to take shower before going to bed before the heater is turned off. i could not believe what i was hearing after paying her over $2400 for our stay we had to eat and shower when she wanted. we did eat twice at the Hotel, on our first day because we were starving when we arrived and then we asked for cheese to go with our spaghetti alarravieta and she screamed across the hall " NO Formagio with this dish" and that was the end of that. to suffend things up we called her Mussolini's grand daughter because she treats you with dictatorship and not very hostess like. i think deep down she could be a very nice person when she wants but we need to send Ms. Laura to edicate school for the Hoteliers. but if you can overcome all these things I tell you what a wonderful place and location this Hotel has. just be prepared to be able to deal with her rudeness and harsh words sometimes,OH and what ever you do never ask for Formagio for the spagetti. hahaha Enjoy your stay.

It has taken me almost two years to write this, because all I've wanted to do since staying at Hotel Hell is FORGET the whole experience. And even now, I don't want to spoil my day by remembering the myriad unpleasantries we suffered from the dominatrix iron-fisted "hospitality" of Laura the Terrible. I had been to Europe a dozen times, had stayed in all variety of bed/breakfasts,small inns, and guest houses, and have never once, in any price range from the humblest to the most posh/pricey, been treated with such utter disrespect, contempt, and downright rudeness.

My husband and I would not have minded the so-so dinners, nor even the really stingy breakfasts, as we'd rather hike, sightsee, and explore than sit and stuff our faces. In the morning, all we really want is a good pot of strong caffe' latte. But oh, God forbid you ask Laura or her unsmiling staff for a cup of anything before exactly 8 a.m.---if you insist, you might (or might not) get your coffee a bit earlier, but she will slam it down on the table and scowl.

When we checked out we were floored by what she had charged us that week for the carafes of wine we had had with dinner. It was watered down, and not very good to begin with, but she priced it like a rare vintage---pure highway robbery!

Room was okay, but oh the noise---the hotel is right on the street by the boat dock and---well, I'm a heavy sleeper, luckily. Anyone who isn't (my poor husband!) should not stay here (if for no other reason, and there are many.)

There. I feel better having written this! If you go to Varenna (and you should! Lake Como is wonderful) consider staying at Bellagio, or another Varenna hotel. Read the negative reviews here---I agree with every single one---and give Albergo Olivedo the big go-by.

Hotel Olivedo was wonderful. We got to stay in Suite 7 with a balcony. The room furnishings were lovely. What a gem. Laura made us feel so special we wished we had stayed longer.

We stayed at the Hotel Olivedo in June. We were fortunate to stay in the villa up the road from the main hotel. It was fabulous beyond words! Laura was so sweet, helpful and hardworking! She and I share the same birthday so she has to be great! The girl from Texas says Rick Steves was right. This hotel is worth the stay. Happy birthday in December Laura!

Enjoyed a nice stay at Hotel Olivedo with two adults, and two teenagers. Comfortable rooms right on Lake Como. An amusing site was the ferry terminal in front of the hotel. Laura was a very accomodating hostess. Parking nearby. Great breakfast included.

Rick Steves' Italy guidebook description of Laura and the accommodations at Hotel Olivedo's adjacent La Torretta were exactly right. Laura greeted us, served at meal times (delicious meals too, by the way), and gave us some pointers for our first day in Italy. We only stayed one night before moving on to join our Rick Steves' tour which started at nearby Villa Cipressi. Our room was clean, routine size by Italian standards, and with a view over the lake that was breathtaking morning, noon, and night.

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — We had a meal plan which included breakfast and dinner at reasonable prices, but we ordered a lunch that was a bit pricey.

Laura, the proprietor of this lovely hotel, is brisque, efficient, and all business. She runs the hotel like a well-oiled machine and with the exception of some kitchen staff, seems to be a one-woman show. She greeted us, checked us in and out, ran the dining room for dinner, and kept the accounting and records straight. In fact, it's more of a bed and breakfast then a hotel.

Our room was very large and had ample space. Ours had 3 beds and a comfy cot to sleep 4 comfortably. We also had a nice balcony overlooking a tiny square in front of the ferry dock, which was only 25 feet from the front door! This of course means that the water of Lake Como was that close too! We woke every morning to the stunning beauty of the lake and the tiny town of Varenna. The lobby was a little small, but clean and the grand staircase opened into the lobby as if to welcome us and call us to our room.

There were only two small downsides to the hotel -- no elevators and very small bathrooms (in some cases, no private bathrooms -- always remember to ask for that when traveling in Europe, as it isn't a given that each room has it's own bathroom). 4 flights of stairs is a lot when we are carrying luggage and going up and down several times a day. But overall, it was a wondeful hotel and being on the 4th floor afforded us a lovely view.

The restaurant that Laura runs was amazing! It's a fixed menu and we had the same options each night for 3-day stay. But that gave us a chacne to try different options and I can say without a doubt that it was all delicious. Try the pumpkin gnocchi and the cotoletta (breaded veal).

In terms of location, Varenna was a wonderful home base for our visit to Lake Como. The hotel is a short 10-15 minute walk from the train station (all down hill -- so it's easy to pull luggage -- but get a cab when you leave and have to go up hill!). It is right across from a ferry stop for easy transport to the other towns on Lake Como. The tickets were about 3.50 euro per ride or you can get an all day ticket (I believe it was 10.50 euro for an all day pass that lets you get on and off the ferry's as much as you want.

I would whole-heartedly recommend Laura's Hotel Olivedo AND using Varenna as a home base when exploring the amazing Lak Como. It was one of my favorite places on our trip to Italy.
