Truly a home away from home. Clean rooms, great touristo dinner menu, and central to everything. We were warmly welcomed and treated. Steps to ferry, beach, restaurants. Pvt parking in lot behind hotel. Made this our base while we explored Lk. Como-good choice! GPS extremely helpful.

Only negative for us (minor): No shower curtain in tub.

We stayed at Hotel Olivedo and had a wonderful time. We had a very spacious room (for 4 people) which is hard to find in Europe. Our view was amazing and the air conditioning was a lifesaver! We loved the hotel's decor and the antiques in the breakfast room. The breakfast was a little lacking but the dinner more than made up for it. The ravioli was the best we had in Varenna.

Laura was very courteous but not overly friendly. She gave us information about hikes, the ferry and where to find a good beach to swim in the lake. We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends especially in the summertime with the a/c. It was also conveniently located close to but not in the heart of the town and we didn't get as much of the street noise as we could have in other hotels in town and downtown Varenna was a few minutes away-walking, along a beautiful boardwalk along the edge of the lake.

Stayed here for two nights in August with my significant other.

Hotel Olivedo has the makings of a top, highly-rated hotel: 1) the hotel and rooms boast terrific old-style charm, with very nice antique embellishments throughout, (furniture, paintings, rugs) solid villa-esque construction, combined with modern upgraded bathroom facilities 2) the location, for those intending to ferry around a bit and also walk from the Varenna train station, is highly convenient 3) the price is reasonable at 140 Euros/night, which includes a very nice lake view, albeit somewhat obstructed by the vehicular traffic associated with the ferry boats.

However, the ratings is constrained by the fairly curt service by no-nonsense hotel innkeeper, Laura. You can probably read plenty about her in the reviews, but she is very hard-working -- she is present during breakfast all the way up to dinner time, ie 12+ hour days -- so she doesn't seem prepared to give any customer much time of day. For instance, she merely responded to our inquiry of our non-operational A/C that "it isn't working today" without volunteering any more details or offer to help. We were prepared for this type of service and were able to shrug it off -- for instance, we came prepared with ear plugs so that we could keep the windows open at night -- but it did sour the experience. The fact that we had to pay cash also seemed a petty, penny-pinching demand of customers.

If I could offer two pieces of advice to prospective visitors, it would be 1) to the extent that you want more info on Varenna (map, restaurants...etc), do not go to Laura, but go to the Tourist Office in the train station, perhaps a 7-10 minute walk away. There was a young gentleman there who was tremendously affable and helpful (providing us with coupons to the castle, calling a restaurant to make reservations for us....). Tremendous helpful. 2) check out Hotel du Lac and Albergo Milano -- we peeked into these establishments. Hotel du Lac has a fantastic terrace, the service there seemed quite good, and the location was terrific. Albergo Milano was actually my top choice, but there was no availability. But they were always very friendly whenever I called to inquire into rooms, the hotel, the restaurant.

We had three rooms at the Hotel Olivedo for two nights. The rooms were old fashioned, but spacious, with gorgeous views of the lake. One of the bathrooms was completely modernized with a new shower stall; the other two had bathtubs with handhelds. In addition to the old-fashioned furniture, there are other throwback elements to the hotel noted in other reviews: one is the towels and the other is a no-frills traditional continental breakfast. From my perspective, it's all worth it, for the perspective of waking up and looking out the shutters onto that beautiful lake. Also, anyone who doesn't eat at the hotel is making a sore mistake. The dinners are outstandingly good. If breakfast leaves you feeling a bit peckish, it is a good excuse to go up the hill to the main village square where there is a small fruit store and a butcher shop with very good cookies.

I jut recently came home from a fatastic stay at ake come, but hotel Olivedo will not be one of my pleasent holiday memories... We had planned a rwo night stay at Olivedo, but checked out after the first night. Unlike many others, we found Laura, the hotel owener very unhelpfull and angry. We sleped extremely bad ( 2-3 hours) because af the larm from the kitchen which we sleped right above, the barking dog at the reception, the clock in the hall that rang every half hour, the sounds from the air condition and the noises from the harbour. The room was okay, nicely furnitured and a fine balcony and bathroom. We found the breakfast extremely poor. We will never return to this hotel, especially not after staying at the Du Lac in Varenna, for nearly the same price...

We took a flight from paris to milan, a bus from malpensa to milan stazione centrale, and a train from milan to varenna. It was a long, tiring day. We took a cab down to olivedo from the station, even though I think it's a fairly easy walk--about 8 euro. We had rooms in the B&B Villa next to the hotel. our room was huge, clean, beautifully furnished with a great view of the lake and a really nice marble bathroom. Laura was lovely, straightforward and brisk, with a twinking sense of humor. We did not have help with our luggage, but we travel light, so didn't need it. We really enjoyed the food, or at least the pasta, and after traipsing around to the other restaurants in Varenna, ended up eating at the hotel restaurant alot. The eggplant parmigiana was our favorite. Wine list could use an upgrade. The breakfast is light, but well served. The towels are fairly typical of old school places in Italy, I remember getting them in Milan and Bologna year ago. It can eb a little noisy with the ferry, and cars, until evening when it really quiets down.
There's alot to do around Varenna; we hiked up to the castle at the top of the hill and saw the birds of prey demonstration and wandered in the little town up there. We took the ferry to Bellagio and Menaggio, both of which bigger, and not as quaint and a little more touristy, than Varenna. Near Menaggio is the Villa Carlotta, which is amazing, but I actually enjoyed more the Villa Monasteri in Varenna, a beautiful old villa with gardens and a temple, and several charming gentlemen who told showed us around told us great stories about the place. Generally, we all loved Olivedo, and had a lovely restful vacation there.

Varenna is a lovely little town and the Hotel Olivedo was perfect. We had a corner room with 2 balconies with great views of the lake and the Alps. Laura was so friendly and inviting and took very good care of us. We decided to take part in the evening dinner and were not disappointed! My husband still talks about the ravioli he had and my eggplant parmesan was done perfectly.
