“Can't beat the view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

Without doubt, the view we had from the spacious balcony of the theolinda suite is in the top ten (and probably top 5) vistas of any hotel I have visited in over 35 years of international travel. I say this despite thunderstorms rolling through the area for our entire visit. Truly breathtaking. The common terrace of the upper building is also stunning with beautiful gardens lining the patio. The Theolinda suite is noteworthy primarily for the view and nice patio furniture. The room itself, which can sleep four with Murphy like bunk beds, is spacious for european standards and the main bed comfortable. The shower is a bit tiny although the bathroom had clearly been renovated. The common area at the end of the second funicular is very nice. The lobby has a restaurant which unfortunately does not serve lunch but has acceptable wine with nuts and potato chips if you are hungry. The wireless worked great in the restaurant, but not as well in the actual suite. Dinner was acceptable, but nothing to rave about in the hotel restaurant. Of course, the view is stunning as already mentioned. The negatives of the place are that it is up a steep narrow road that is 2-way. Advice given by staff about going up or down was to grit your teeth and speed up toward the on-coming car... Also, it is uncomfortable in the pouring rain to walk to and from town. Great location with respect to villa monasterio and did I mention the view? Overall, it was a lovely anniversary at the hotel and a great value. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: theolinda suite

Varenna is not the cheapest place to stay, from that point of view, this is an excellent choice. The rooms are clean, very clean, and the staff is kind. The restaurant is a good alternative to those in Varenna especially because you don't have to walk back to the hotel.
The hotel is divided in two building separated by funicular. The view from the main building, at the bottom is good... but the view from the building on top, is just the best view of Lake Como that you could have.
There are a few points that you should consider before booking:
- This hotel does not have a pool, and in Varenna there are no good public beaches or pools. Be aware of this if you visit Varenna in the summer months.
- The Wi Fi signal, at least in the bottom building, is bad... almost to not working at all.
- There is little sound isolation in the rooms, so the sleep quality is bad.
- To get to the Hotel, you can take a Taxi, or you can walk.. uphill. It will take no more than 15 minutes from Varenna center, but is uphill.

Room Tip: Try the rooms in the upper building.

If you are not afraid of heights, you should stay at the top bldg of the hotel. You have to take the funicular up and the view is spectacular. We stayed at the lower bldg. the room was clean and the view was ok. Once you been up to the top bldg any view below that is going to be 'ok'.
Everything is good except for the same breakfast every morning, it would be hard to eat the same thing for more than 3 mornings.

This review is a long time coming. My brother and I stayed here in the summer of 2012. To this day, I have fond memories of the hotel, the town Varenna, and the Lake Como. The view at the hotel was spectacular, both from the room overlooking the lake, the hotel grounds, and the top of the hotel after riding the lift up. A word of advice, car or cab is a must. We took the train here, and upon arrival could not find a cab and did not have a car. Which meant walking to the hotel with our luggage, which was not advisable.

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay on the very top floor of this hotel. We took a funicular up the mountain to the 6th floor which had a view that was spectacular. The patio was large and we enjoyed sitting up there viewing Lake Como. The room was quiet and we slept well. The food in the restaurant is average yet the folks who ran the hotel were friendly and enjoyable. We will be back to stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for the corner room of the Alto-top-and the 6th floor. It is up two funicular rides, which are...

Stayed here 5 nights and have never found it so difficult to review a hotel!
Firstly there are 2 hotels - the lower where we stayed and an older (more expensive I presume) upper part which is 150m further up the mountain by private funicular. All rooms appear to have stunning views over the lakes.
Good - good service , cleanliness, the bar (fabulous view) and the bar food (simple and reasonably priced, with the views) and the views, the views
Bad points - our double bed was two singles that appeared to dislike each other intensely, the sound insulation between rooms was poor, the breakfast was very average with poor coffee and fruit juice, wifi was obtainable in our room and very poor elsewhere.

Similarly the location is good (high up thus the views, 10 mins walk from Varenna) and bad (MUST use a taxi if you aren't carrying your bags)

We had the Varenna room at the tip-top of the hotel. This hotel is fabulous and a totally unique experience but it is not in the main part of the town. We reached it by climbing up the hill to the hotel, climbing stairs to an outdoor funicular elevator to get to a second funicular elevator, then taking an indoor elevator to the 6th floor. The view from high, high on the mountain was amazing and there are no other buildings around. We had a private balcony, clean room and bathroom, good breakfast, and nice staff helped us find a good restaurant and get a taxi. If, like us, you do not have a car, it is a fairly long walk from the ferry with part of it uphill and up stairs. If you come in at the train station I would suggest a taxi which you should probably arrange for in advance. It is worth the extra trouble to get to. You will never forget it.

Room Tip: The rooms on the very top floor with balconies are a little pricier but worth it for the view.
