This hotel is a wonderful place to stay. I strongly suggest getting the "frontal view" of the lake. Those rooms are larger and have the loveliest view of lake como. Staff is warm, welcoming and there to assist with any requests. Car parking is available for extra charge and well worth it. It's a bit of a walk, but in Varenna parking is very limited.
Breakfast is quite good selection. Has only 8 rooms so book early. Will be the highlight of your trip. The "laterial view" rooms have small balcony, overlooking alley/walkway, much smaller in size. The road it is on, is closed to traffic so get good walking directions and pack light.

We spent 3 wonderful nights in Varenna at the Albergo Milano hotel at the very start of June. Albergo Milano is as pleasant and relaxing a place to stay as you have read about.
The one thing to note is how to get there if you are toting luggage with you. When we arrived via ferry, we walked along the beautiful "passarella" along the lake since it was a faster walk (about 5 to 10 minutes, make the first left once you come off the "passarella"). Unfortunately this leaves you at the bottom of the steepest set of steps in Varenna and the Albergo Milano is near the top of these steps. Talk about a thigh workout trying to get your bags to the top!! The better way to get to the hotel from either the ferry or train is to walk along the upper street (name I cannot remember, but there is really just one) - while it is slightly uphill, there are no steps and once you turn onto Via XX Settembre, the hotel will be a short few steps away without having to climb any steps. This is good to know since the hotel also does not have an elevator/lift and therefore you will be carrying bags up more steps to get to your room. :)
We had a top floor room - cinque - with a small balcony facing the lake. The room was a very good size and well appointed. The tile floor was very nice and the room was very clean. It was nice to wake up each morning to such a beautiful view! Note that there are no TVs in the rooms if that is of any importance to you.
The included breakfast buffet is the typical standard set of meats, cheeses, fruits, and pastries. These were surprisingly not as good as other hotels that we have stayed at in Italy and at times they ran out, but we are not big breakfast eaters, so it was not too big of a deal for us. The espresso and cappucinno were very good!
The thing that really separates Albergo Milano from other hotels in our opinion was the service. We dealt with Bettina (an owner) and Maria each day and they were extremely friendly and helpful, no matter what questions we had for them. We felt more like we were staying at a friend's home versus a hotel.
There is also a very friendly little cat, Sashemi, who belongs to Bettina and stays in and around the hotel. If you happen to be a cat lover, you will certainly make a new friend. :)
Varenna itself is a charming little town with great lake views and nice places to eat. We did not get a chance to eat at the hotel restaurant (La Vista), but for a good panini or pizza and a great waterfront seat, check out Bar Il Molo.
Overall this hotel was a great stay, especially if you can get a lake front view. We will hopefully return to Varenna one day and would certainly stay at Albergo Milano again.

This review covers the Casa Rosa a satellite property very close to the Albergo Milano. My room was quaint with a lovely balcony perfect for watching the sunset over the lake. The room was a bit on the small side, but very comfortable. I did not notice A/C, but there was strong fan and plenty of breezes off the lake to keep the room cool in late May. My one complaint was that there were an abundance of ants (which the manager said they would address promptly). Word of warning, like many things in Varenna, Casa Rosa is up a step set of steps - 3 flights to be exact with no lift. The view from the balcony is reward for the climb, but if you're not able to tolerate steps, this is not the place for you. The rate seemed a little high given what I'd paid elsewhere in Italy on this trip, but comparable to the other hotels in the Varenna area when I booked. Breakfast at the hotel nearby was terrific with nice selection of pastry, yogurts, cereal and fruit. Dinner at La Vista (the Albergo Milano's restaurant) is not to be missed!

We had a terrace room overlooking Lake Como at this wonderful little hotel in Varenna. It is within walking distance of free parking, but you do have to haul your bags down the tiny street and up stairs to get there. It's worth it. The staff are very friendly, the rooms have modern baths and some have balconies or terraces with lakefront views. The beds are comfortable and the furnishings charming. Everything feels fresh and cared for. The breakfast is an abundant buffet served on a large terrace that looks out over the lake. The ferry dock is close by for easy day trips. There is also a restaurant that serves an excellent prix fixe dinner on certain nights with a reservation.

My wife and I spent two nights in this charming hotel and can’t wait to return. Varenna proved to be an unexpected treasure, a laid-back and low-key setting for the final leg in our two-week Honeymoon. Albergo Milano was a major factor in our enjoyment of this picturesque village.

We booked a room with a lateral lake view – in effect this means that instead of looking straight out our window to see the lake, we needed to step out onto the balcony and turn ninety degrees to the left. The view, even with the extra actions required, was well worth it. We each passed some quiet time each morning/evening sitting on the balcony trying to focus on reading while our eyes were drawn across the lake to the Alps.

The room itself was rather large compared to others we had throughout Europe, and surprisingly modern. The bathroom was especially interesting, with shimmering, iridescent green tiles lining the shower. Comfortable bed, good room service (we only ordered Prosecco). Service was generally fantastic, with only one minor hiccup—our table placement for dinner on our first night was unfortunately inside rather than on the gorgeous terrace. This was really my own fault—I had wavered in setting a reservation time prior to our arrival. Will not make that mistake next time!

The typical continental breakfast of cold cuts, breads, juices, coffee/tea, etc. was of good quality, but the setting (outdoor terrace) offered a spectacular panoramic view of the lake. I had the entire terrace to myself one morning and could have sat there for an hour.

Having driven over from Venice, we took advantage of the hotel’s parking – there is no direct access to the hotel (or to any of Varenna beyond the main square) so we had to live-park in the square to unload our belongings and then retrieve a key from the hotel front desk. The parking space was located 100 meters from the main square (about 400 meters from the hotel), an underground space with an aluminum garage door on the space. This was available for a relatively modest daily rate with advance booking.

The hotel restaurant is very interesting, offering up a very limited fixed price menu each night. The quality is good and the restaurant was booked solid every night we were there. The night we went, the asparagus with prosciutto appetizer was very good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the guinea fowl with risotto in truffle cream sauce.

The location is perfect – two minutes down any of several steep stairways to the water and other restaurants / bars. More importantly, the hotel provides easy access to the path leading to the ferry terminal, from which you can dash off to Bellagio or other lakeside towns.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we decided to extend by another day. Although our room in Albergo Milano was already reserved for new visitors, the helpful staff were able to put us into a privately owned apartment whose rentals they manage. The apartment was a hundred meters from the Albergo Milano and proved to be equally wonderful (and slightly cheaper, actually)! Much thanks to the staff for helping find us another place to stay. We can’t wait to see you again.

(NOTE: Our trip was 21 – 24 June 2008 – I’m a little late posting this!)

We stayed at Albergo Milano for three nights and had a wonderful experience. The staff was very friendly, the view from our room was breath taking, and the food at La Vista was delicious. We highly reccomend this hotel and the cooking class at Il Caminetto http://www.ilcaminettoonline.com/beb_e.php. We learned how to make lots of different pastas and sauces from scratch and the chef was very friendly and helpful. Varenna was very romantic and beautiful.

We loved our 2 night stay at this place. The pictures do not lie. The room was great and very clean. You can tell they put a lot of time into the renovations. Everything is very new and updated. We were in a room with a balcony and lakeview. It was perfect. There are 2 rooms like this, 2 rooms with a terrace and then 4 rooms on the side of the building with balconies but a sideways view of the lake. Really any room would be fine. We sat on our balcony each evening reading and drinking a glass of wine. I would highly recommend this place. We did make a trip over to Bellagio and I was so thankful I had chose Varenna over Bellagio. Varenna is much less touristy and more of what we were looking for.
