The hotel is certainly not a luxury property, but the rooms are clean, well-kept, and very comfortable. Our room (#6) was very spacious, as it was outfitted for disabled guests (another nice part was that the hotel was completely accessible, with outfitted bathroom and a lift). The balcony over the square was a nice feature, as we could sit and enjoy wine in the evenings. It is worth noting that it can be loud if the restaurants are busy below, but the noise always died down by the time we wanted to sleep, as the town gets very quiet after dinner. The 7AM church bells were also a bit excessive (the bell rings around 50 times as an alarm clock for the town), but this is obviously not the hotel's fault.
The owners and management of this hotel are fantastic, and always ensured that we had everything we needed. They were happy to provide wine and snacks from the cafe that would could take upstairs and enjoy on the patio. We also didn't expect breakfast, but the tables were set every morning to provide a very generous complimentary breakfast to ourselves and the other guests of the hotel. With only 8 rooms, the hotel is very cozy.
Varenna itself is fantastic, and I would recommend it as the place to stay on Como to combine classic Italian charm, while avoiding the crowds in some of the other towns.More
