“Past its prime”
Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

We went back to La Rucola after ten years. It was not a happy return. Back in the days this restaurant shined out for the creativity and quality of the cuisine. Not any more. The bread was stale and poorly made and so was the desert. How can one serve a (dull) mango and passion fruit sorbet in the peak of the Italian summer when local fruits are at their best!? The starters and the mains showed glimpses of the genius that once characterised this restaurant, but not enough to justify 150 Euro per head. The same may be said about the matching
wine menu, which was uninspiring and with some rather odd combinations. The decor of the room where we dined displayed little eye for taste. The service was also not adequate: the wine was often served after the food had been consumed and we almost needed to get up and pour water ourselves. Not good enough for a restaurant at this price level.

I celebrated my birthday with my husband at La Rucola and it was a very enjoyable experience.

We chose to have a starter and main course instead of the tasting menu as we didn't think we'd manage to eat that much. We were presented with various appetisers and and amuse bouche and a taster of beautiful desserts at the end of meal so we still had the opportunity to taste many wonderful creations from the chef.

Everything we ate tasted superb and demonstrated the skill, creativity and imagination of the chef without the "performance art" style in some Michelin starred restaurants which personally I find a bit pretentious. We enjoyed the food immensely and the welcome on our arrival and service throughout were very professional without being too formal.

The wine list is very interesting and a special mention here for the sommelier (unfortunately we didn't get his name) as when we explained our interest in the local Lugana wines he enthusiastically talked us through the list, provided some tastings for us and ensured we chose we a fabulous bottle to accompany our meal. He was very helpful in writing down the names of the wines we'd tasted and we are now in the process of ordering some to direct from the producer.

The price for all this? A very reasonable €200.

“A huge disappointment!”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

I went there with my wife, expecting Italian fine dining.

At a price of 150EUR per person with a wine pairing the expectations MUST be high.

What we got was in some aspects good: the service was solid and the wine pairing was professional.

The food however was....slightly above Italian average. Unfortunately there wasn't anything new, interesting, not to mention exceptional about it. It was just a series of OK dishes that can't be remembered for anything.

NOT enough in Italy and a waste of our evening, our time and our money. With this budget we could have done so much better in so many other places and I regret having chosen La Rucola instead of them.
