I agonized over where to stay after agonizing over which Lake Garda resort to stay in and deciding on Sirmione.
The location of the hotel is excellent. We booked a comfort double which was located in the annex – ie. the side of the hotel not where reception is located. That suited as it was the building with the spa/pool area and we could just go easily in our sunwear from the room. There was a sulphur smell just outside the spa area and that corridor above it, but we were on floor one and once in the room, couldn’t get any smell. I didn’t book or pay for a room with a view of lake or harbour – had hoped we might get one anyway but we didn’t get an upgrade – our view was just looking over to the hotel reception opposite us on the other side of the street. We did not book the hotel directly and we got the room we paid for – so you can’t complain about that. Nothing to do with the hotel but maybe they could try to do something about it – a few nights there was “music/singing” in the square near the castle. I am not an early to bed person or a light sleeper so it didn’t bother me too much but it was far too loud and went on far too late – 12.30am or something? and it was terrible. I actually left the room one evening to get away from the noise/assault on my ears.
The room style would not be my taste – but it looks as they do on their site – and is a classic look. But it was big enough, bed huge and comfortable, big bathroom, nice fridge, plenty storage space, and all the little extras provided – water, slippers, robes, toothbrushes. Himself was delighted when he discovered it was Sky tv and could watch sky sports at night. The only negative of the accommodation was the shower. Flooded the bathroom everytime we tried to use it. The shower door is not sufficient for where the showerhead is located to stop the water going everywhere. The free wifi was excellent. The air conditioning worked well.
The breakfast was fantastic – especially for Italy. It was of a very high standard, everything was very fresh and a great variety and very plentiful and refreshed right up to the end of the breakfast time. I looked forward so much to breakfast every morning, it was the highlight of the day. Strawberries and prosecco for breakfast – yes thank you. We sat every morning on the terrace beside the lake, with the amazing views, watching the ferries, the people, the swans, ducks, birds. Breakfast served until 10.30am which for late starters like me is good. They didn’t start clearing away early or making you feel like you should hurry and finish up. We had many lazy long breakfasts there. The staff contrary to other reports I found pleasant, professional and what I would expect of a 4 star hotel. Service very good all round and and it was immaculately clean.
The spa/pool area was the other reason for choosing here. I was worried it might be small but the sundeck area was much larger than the photos suggest as it wraps around one side of the hotel. We had no problem getting sunchairs any day. The views were great and spent many hours sitting there in the sun watching all the visitors, the boats, the wildlife – in the centre of all the action. The set-up is great, with the outdoor area and the pool, jacuzzi and the indoor area if you needed some shade from the sun, toilets, showers, changing room and in the colder weather would be great to have the sauna, indoor jacuzzi etc. But, please do upgrade the sunchairs as most sagging badly.
The price we paid was ok. It was definitely not the cheap option. But not expensive compared to many other similar standard hotels and in Sirmione town which is quite upmarket, all accommodation was on the pricier side. The price paid however was worth it for the standard of accommodation received overall and the facilities available and the location. Having stayed there now, I am so glad I spent the extra money to stay in Sirmione itself rather than Columbare. No comparison. And staying there made all our sightseeing so easy as the bus and ferries were so convenient and the choice of bars and restaurants within a few minutes walk made it so relaxing. And the hotel looked a lot nicer than most of the other hotels within the town and on the other side of the town.
IMO the hotel deserves to be higher in the Sirmione hotel ratings than it is. My experience was very positive overall. I would definitely stay again. And if I can afford it, I’ll spend a bit more and go for the rooms with a lake view and balcony. If it’s a honeymoon or special occasion, I’d recommend the hotel along with one of these types of room – for a perfect romantic stay.
