We spent hours walking around the fantastic remains of the roman villa at the very end of the peninsula. It must have been an incredible sight in antiquity.

Quite a long walk from town (little road train is available if you need it) takes you to the end of the peninsula and the old ruins. Lovely place to spend a few hours, taking in the views and taking photos. Small entrance fee

The site is of a Roman Villa - of breathtaking proportions. All that remains really is the undercroft - and what is would have been like when still intact is incredible.
Lots of olive trees & other scrub - plus loads of wild flowers.
Large variety of insect life (good butterfly selection) & quite a few bird species too.

Sirmione is one of the best places in Lombardy: you can reach it easily passing through Desenzano, a very nice location reachable by train and boat.
Choose a sunny day to taste the best of this marvellous place.
In Desenzano you can find a very interesting Roman House, visit it surely: its structure is very well preserved, you can admire mosaic floors and easily imagine how it could be.in the past, IV century B.C. You can also see an ancient crusher for olive or grape.
After visiting Desenzano I suggest you to take the boat (http://www.navigazionelaghi.com) and reach Sirmione, very famous thermal site. Here you can see the castle and reach the site called "grotte di Catullo" (Catullo's caves), strange definition of an enormous roman villa, 167 x 105 mts, extended over a slope on the southern coast of the Sirmione peninsula, surrounded by the Lake Garda, the most similar to sea. You can easily find information about this house inhabitated by the poet Gaio Valerio Catullo, son a a Roman Governor living in Verona. It probably had also swimming pools conducting the swimmers gradually to the lake. of which you can see the foundation. Go from arch to arch, take a lot of photos and enjoy this chef d'oeuvre dated more or less 100 B.C. The garden, full of olive trees, is the right frame to this wonderful and unforgettable place!
