“Tip of Sirmione Penninsula - Site of an ancient Roman villa - Well worth your time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

We've toured more complete Roman villas in Sicily, but not with this setting...the tip of a peninsula into a 1000 foot deep, receding ice-age lake, the largest lake in Italy. We entered the site through the town of Sirmione, past one of a dozen or more Medieval Scaligeri castles/forts. The museum and archaeological documentation was for most part quite complete with multi-lingual labels and large posters with detailed explanations. Note that this wasn't always the case, with some labels only in Italian. Roaming the ruins was a delight, with walks and signs in both English and Italian. As the old saw says, location, location, location. This villa was owned by a pretty rich Roman dude.

“Incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

Although you get a sense of the scale of the place coming into Sirmione on the steamer it is not until you get there that you appreciate what an undertaking it was to build this place. Stunning. The museum alone is worth the 4 Euros entrance. Walking around the ruins really brings it to life though. OK little cafe/bar outside the gates.
PS it is well worth the walk from the town centre to get there. Very pleasant and we walked back along the eastern shore where there is a walk.

Well worth a visit for the views alone. Nice walk from the town and great views from each side over lake Garda and onto the mountains. Great photo opportunities.
