Nothing to see in this place , you have to pay to see the gardens and there's nothing else to do, overcrowded of tourists getting off the boats which arrive everywhere every five minutes , avoid this place and go somewhere else. Don't pay to enter the gardens they're not worth it.

Our second visit here in 3 years while on a break in Pallanza. A 5 minute passenger ferry takes you to this beautiful island. You can purchase your ferry and entrance tickets from Pallanza ferry terminal. This beautiful island was once home to the wealthy Borremio family. The island boasts beautiful gardens, flowers, trees, wildlife, ponds, peacocks and the grand palace. There is also a café and a pleasant area to sit outside taking in the fantastic scenery. There is plenty to see and walk around the island. It really is a beautiful place and well worth a visit.

Isola Madre was the Borromeo family food source in historic times. It enjoys a better micro-climate than Isola Bella allowing cultivation of an amazing range of plants. The original site was transformed with decorative terraces and a jardin anglais, an informal plant collection dominated by trees and open lawns. The result is quite charming with well labelled plantings coming into their own in April to June. White Peacocks and fabulous Chinese Pheasants add to the enjoyment of the garden. A recent storm blew over a large Cypress now held in place by unsightly cabling and winched upright by use of helicopters. Here is an example of a gardener looking for a challenge! Better surely to accept the tree has run its race and replace it with the next generation of planting. Donate the enormous costs of current works to a charity! Anyway a replacement tree appears to have been planted. The house, though a welcome focus to views is itself somewhat dull.

The Borromeo Islands underwent a transformation on commission by Borromeo family. On Isola Madre, the XVI Century palace is surrounded by an enchanting English style garden. Buy the combi ticket for isola bella and madre for 18.5 euros. You get to see the stunning white peacock in the gardens as well.
