“A secret star”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

I almost don't want to let people know about the Star Hotel because I want to keep it all to myself! However, it was so lovely that I feel obliged to let people know. It's a lovely old coaching inn with a cozy pub and restaurant, which serves the morning breakfast. The owner was nice enough to let us know upon booking that the bar might be a little loud because of a hen night, but we couldn't hear a thing in our room. The room itself was spotless and surprisingly well-fitted. I say surprisingly only because their website is not so modern. However, the bathroom was brand new and immaculately clean. The beds were so comfy; it was exactly what we wanted on our road trip. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. The owner kept trying to get us to take more food or juice with us. They were so kind! At 40 pounds for the night, this was unbeatable. It's just outside of Kirkcudbright and very close to Threave Castle, Caerlaverock Castle, and Sweetheart Abbey. Perfect, perfect, perfect!

We were looking for somewhere to stay in Dumfries & Galloway and chanced upon this online. A bit wary as there were no reviews for it but went with gut instinct and am pleased to say we were not disappointed! This is a 200yr old coaching inn in the tiny village of Twynholm, near Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright. A typical country village pub, the accommodation is to the rear of the main hotel building in a recently refurbished stable block. Where the bar and restaurant in the main part are traditional and slightly older-fashioned (not a complaint, by any means!), the accommodation is contemporary, roomy and spotlessly clean. You can park your car immediately outside your room and have a separate entrance from the hotel. We had one of the best night's sleeps we have had in a hotel - fantastically comfy bed and very quiet location.
We ate in the hotel restaurant which provides good, home-cooked food at very reasonable prices before going through to the very traditional, no fuss bar where the locals were very welcoming. Breakfast was excellent. Choose what you would like the night before, then pick from fruit, cereals, yogurt, etc before your toast and cooked breakfast is served. Amazing potato scones!
Ideal for exploring the area, we used it as a base for exploring Dumfries, Castle Douglas & Kirkcudbright. Right across from the hotel accommodation is the David Coulthard Museum, and about 1 mile away is a chocolate factory. Unfortunately we didn't manage to fit those in, but perhaps the next time!
The family who run the hotel were extremely welcoming and friendly ( the owner's grandson had us in stitches over breakfast!) and have gone that extra mile to make sure their guests have a peaceful, enjoyable stay and we felt, at £62 per room (goes down to £55 in winter), it was excellent value for money. So glad we found this little gem!
