We stayed in this hotel four nights on our Italian holiday in July 2013.

Hotel is located beautifully on the lake, but all too close to the main lakeside road with heavy noisy traffic.
The guests are met by extravagantly decorated lobby interiors with glass, gold and sparkling crystal chandeliers and by rather cold and unengaged front desk staff.

Our double room turned out to be far from the splendor of the lobby area, although with the expensive leather and fabric décor of the walls.

The room was small and totally uncomfortable.
Uncomfortable hard beds, only one brick- like pillow per person, plastic cups instead of glasses, no complimentary water in the room, small closet with all too few hangers. Bathroom was large but without the necessary shelf space, and without plug for the hair styler. All this is expected from the hotel in this (high!) price category, which markets itself as a four star luxury hotel.

Restaurant is on the lake side and has stunning views, but food quality is not in line with the price level. Breakfast was OK, with a good variation of freshly made juices, but nothing outstanding.

Nowadays it seems outrageous to pay 5 EUR per hour of use of WIFI, but this hotel is still living in the past decade.

And still, I would have given this hotel three stars, if not for one shocking episode. On a rainy day we have borrowed two umbrellas from the concierge. These were ordinary umbrellas with the hotel logo. We have returned them personally a few hours later, but to our great surprise we later found extra charges of 20 EUR for use of umbrellas on our hotel bill. Outrageous experience!
Good reason to be more awake and attentive at the check out!!

All in all, I can not recommend this hotel, especially if you are looking for quality, comfort and attention to the guests.

Room Tip: Rooms on the mountain side are too noisy due to traffic

Stylish tourist hotel with some elegance but no really class or atmosphere. The mix of elegant hotel and busy beach resort is a little peculiar: Almost naked people in swim suits mix with dressed-up guests in the elegant foyer.

We had booked a (high rate) triple room with mountain view which disappointly appeared to be small, dull, with a tiny balcony and views to outdoor stairs and the neighbouring building. Not a place to accommodate three people! Paid for upgrade to a lake view room, larger and with a nice balcony. This room was stylish and pleasant, decorated with “golden age simili”. Large, nice bathroom, but lacking functional shelf space. Also there was no place to dry swim suits. A/C in the room did not function convincingly, not even after we asked front desk to check it.

Front desk staff friendly and “correct”. Breakfast not impressive: Wide choice with freshly pressed orange juice and a wide choice of cakes, but in general medium quality. Service not very engaged (no smiles).

On-pay parking options in garage, on the ground or a parking space across the road. Crossing the road may be dangerous due to heavy traffic and high speed motorcycles around the corner. All space was occupied due to a wedding so we found nearby alternatives.

WiFi very expensive (20 € for 10 hours), so are drinks in the bar. Best asset is the private beach with free sunbeds and umbrellas, and a pier for jumping into the deep water. Excellent for swims and playing in the water, which makes the place attractive for families willing to spend the extras. Town of Baveno is not interesting. Neighboring Stresa has more atmosphere but too fashionable for our taste.

Conclusion: We are willing to spend extra for high class, comfort and atmosphere when it’s there. Splendid offers some elegance and good swims but nothing more.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms with "mountain view" on lower floors.

We stayed at Hotel Splendid while a part of the Cosmos "Best of Italy" tour. What a lovely and beautiful place and surroundings. The views are "splendid" and the staff was very pleasant & friendly. The rooms were large with wood, leather & cloth walls. The room smelled stale so the large patio doors was left open to air it out. We had a view of the lake, mountains & swimming pool from our room which made up for the smell. You can walk to near by restaurants and feel very safe.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor facing the lake and mountains.

This hotel is well located. Restaurants are within walking distance. The hotel itself as a pool and a private beach. You can even rent a paddle boat, which is a very nice way to enjoy the tranquility of the lake and see the beautiful mountains.
The rooms are quite big and very well decorated.
The staff is nice and willing to help you. I stayed there as part of a Cosmos tour and they were very nice to us. The hot chocolate at breakfast was delicious. The entire breakfast was really good.
If you want to enjoy a peaceful time this is the place to go. I would definitely stay there again !

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view on the lake!

Stayed at the Hotel Splendid for 7 nights for my honeymoon, the hotel is fantastic. The decor is stunning. We had a suite on the 3rd floor which had great views over the lake. Breakfast has a good range of options, don't miss the freshly squeezed orange juice! We ate in the hotel restaurant on 3 occasions as the food was so good, we can recommend the fillet steak and chocolate souffle.

All the hotel staff were really helpful and friendly, especially Guiseppe in ther restaurant and Erwin at the bar. The hotel bar is great for a pre dinner or after dinner drink with a great range of options.

The position of the hotel is perfect as it is on the lake front away from the main road, not many hotels can boast that they can offer this. The facilities at the hotel are great, we used the spa but didn't try the outdoor pool but it was a good size and they had plenty of sunbeds.

We would definitely recommend this hotel for a special occasion.

I travelled to this hotel for a meeting, but also took my 8 year old daughter for the weekend to look around the area and have a mini-break. She was thrilled with the Hotel Splendid (and I was happy too); friendly staff, well maintained building, beautiful surroundings, and a diverse breakfast including cake! The room was of a reasonable size and we had a lake view with a balcony that looked difficult to fall off, TV had numerous channels in English and I was made to suffer "Pop TV" every morning, large bathroom with bath and separate shower...and a hair dryer. I had a few niggles, but these were not really the hotel's fault so no penalty. For example, the hotel pool was outside and not heated, and therefore FREEZING and I was forced by said 8 year old to swim. The Italians do not have the option of devaluing their currency, unlike the British government, so everything in Italy felt really expensive (the Sterling:Euro rate was parity once the banks had ripped you off for currency exchange). The surrounding area was great, we went out to the islands, visited a swimming pool-adventure playground, walked around Baveno, and ate ice cream....I will try to find time to add some more reviews of these things to do. All-in-all a very good hotel in an area that was beautiful and relaxing rather than exciting.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view, I guess it might cost a little more but it is worth it.

we were previously staying at the Hotel Bristol in Stresa, but was advised prior to the trip that they need to close a day early for refurbishment. As a result, they offered us a suite at their premier hotel in their chain, Hotel Splendid, a few kilometres away on Lago Maggiore, which had recently been refurbished itself. What a find! The suite had a large (corner) balcony facing the lake in two directions. To say the least it was luxurious, with sumptuous bath and rainforest shower. The furnishings were 5 star and the service efficient and under-stated.

The views of the lake were beyond my expectations, despite visiting Lago Maggiore regularly since childhood. It helped that the weather was unseasonally good (shirt-sleeve and T-shirts), despite being the end of October. The sunsets over the lake were outstanding. The grounds around the hotel on the lakeside look fantastic. Beautiful trees, shrubs and plants with plenty of places to sit and read and a jetty/pontoon onto the lake and marina nearby.

Baveno is not quite as picturesque and touristy as Stresa, but has a couple of decent restaurants (more in next review). I would recommend the hotel very highly and the Zacchera hotel chain also. We also stayed at Grand Hotel Bristol in Stresa which is now being re-furbished. If it matches the re-furbishment at Splendid, then that would be one to visit too!

Room Tip: The corner suites have phenomenal views of the lake. Since we were upgraded, I'm not sure how pr...
