“Luxurious Stay in classic style”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

Had a great stay in this Hotel, we loved the style, very well appointed, excellent service and staff who were always willing to help. Buffet breakfast was excellent with wide choice of high quality food.
Nice grounds and ample parking.
Made use of the gym and both indoor and outdoor pool.
Would recommend a lake view.

Room Tip: Recommend a lake view room, we had 306 which was spacious with 2 small balconies and sofa.

This was a great hotel- light and oozing grandure. uniformed waiters and concierge. Escorted to you rooms, ( a tad small with balcomy that could seat only 2). Even had wooden booths from the 30s to make external phone calls and to rooms) Cocktails come with a basket of olives, crisps and nuts. Breakfast had....well i cant think what it didnt have- but i recommend the orange juice-freshly squeezed in front of you. The corridor is an art gallery to be explored on an overcast day ( its the lakes its going to be variable weather). Nice outdoor pool and extensive gardens.

OVERALL JAW DROPPING IN ITS PRESENTATION, and not to fussy.

Room Tip: Lake view if you can, but garden view is good too

we were walk ins at the hotel and very duly impressed. The room was very nice, not spacious but classic with all amenities. We tried the swimming pool which is indoor down in the cellar and closed in - not very impressive. The bar is very nice and the breakfast is excellent. It was a setting out of a Agatha Christie´s story and we liked it a lot. The staff is nice and inviting.

This hotel is lovely, gracious and calming. Situated perfectly for getting a water taxi. Could not fault the staff. Stayed five days and enjoyed every second. Rooms comfortable and the décor makes you smile. The hotel even accommodated my two Cairn Terriers who were complemented on their good manners. Thank you.

Room Tip: If you can get a room with a view of the Lake. Sun rise and sunset beautiful especially in the even...

Stayed only two nights in July 2014 but it wasn't enough. Our room faced the lake and the view was gorgeous. Had a little balcony perfect for two. The bathroom was beautiful all in Marble. Loved the Murano chandeliers in the room and throughout the hotel. Beds were comfortable. Short walk to town to where the shops are and restaurants. The hotel was in a perfect location. Enjoyed the buffet breakfast. The wait staff was wonderful. Diner was over priced for what you got.

Room Tip: Make sure you choose a room with a view of the lake.

Three of us stayed here for 2 nights during July 2014. We booked two of their basic ‘garden view’ rooms. The location of the hotel is reasonably central, being a 5-10 min walk from the ferry pier or town centre. The décor of the hotel is opulent, both in the common areas and the rooms. It seemed very luxurious without being too gaudy.

I was a bit concerned about their small room sizes (advertised at 20-22 square metres for the garden view room). It was not quite as bad as I imagined though – the bedroom and bathroom were a little bit cosy, but not excessively so, and they did find enough space in the bathroom for a double sink and a bidet. They had a jacuzzi bathtub, but we did not test it out. The fixed shower head was far too low for me and also was designed in such a way that a fair amount of water sprayed onto the bathroom floor. The room air conditioning felt effective in general, but for some reason we found ourselves feeling warm during both nights. What was surprising was the spacious balcony which included a chair and two tables, as well as the accompanying mountain view, which was very pleasant. Sure, a lake view would have been preferred, but I don’t think it was worth the additional cost (which was significant).

Breakfast was included in our rate, and we were told we could choose between a full breakfast downstairs or a continental breakfast sent to the room. We tried out both options. The continental breakfast on the first day was a bit of a joke though. It consisted of a bread basket with an assortment of three mini-breads per person, orange juice and coffee. And that’s it!! No fruit, no cheese or meats, etc. On day two, we went downstairs for breakfast. The restaurant was massive and almost completely empty. The breakfast was obviously a lot better than the previous day, but still a bit limited in terms of hot items – which consisted simply of scrambled or hard boiled eggs. The coffee was quite poor on both days. Apart from this, we did have one lunch as room service, and the food was reasonably good. We tried a grilled fish, roast beef sandwich and a chicken salad and all of them were decent and promptly delivered. We also spent a bit of time at the bar downstairs, and they have a good selection of drinks and cocktails on offer, and the setting is quite nice as well. A great option for pre/post dinner drinks.

In terms of service, they are clearly not up to a 5-star standard. Staff often felt too laid back and lacking in professionalism. I was annoyed when we had arrived back at the hotel after midnight and requested a replacement bottle of shower gel, to be told this could not be delivered until the next morning! Surely, any member of staff could have gone and grabbed one from their supply room? When we went down for breakfast we were told in a jovial manner to ‘sit anywhere, eat anything!’. Amusing at the time, but again not very professional for a 5-star hotel.

Also keep in mind that general expenses at the hotel are quite steep. For example, a sandwich or salad will be around €18-25 each (plus a tray charge if ordered through room service). And the worst part was that they could not send an iron to the room, stating this was a fire hazard. We sent some shirts for pressing, and they went about it in a casual way (no forms to fill and no mention of pricing). When checking out we noticed they had charged around €11 per shirt. Excessive on any measure, and they could have at least mentioned it at the time. Actually, they quite often made no mention of pricing and also did not give you any bills to sign (e.g. at the bar). Things would just get charged to your room.

What’s the conclusion? A grand hotel with amazing décor and nice views, but service certainly could improve. They are the only 5-star hotel in the area, so they have a captive audience, and probably see no reason to improve their service or provide better value for money. However, on the whole there were more positives than negatives and I would stay here again in future.

Staff were helpful and professional. Breakfast was great and could sit outside looking out on to the lake. Our room was great and overlooked the lake even though we thought we were getting a room with a garden view. This was a bonus. TV worked and we enjoyed having access to BBC Channels. Easy access to Stresa which is a great location to get boats to other parts of the lake. Only negative - we thought this hotel could improve in terms of being environmentally friendly. Ex - our bathroom towels were changed every day. We would go back!
