“Good But disappointed”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

So basically we went to this hotel for around 4 days , hotel is very central and clean , breakfast was not perfect but good. there is a metro 10 seconds away from the hotel and also a tramm, supermarket 5 min away . so i was happy. the only thing i did not like was one of the staff members, im not sure if he is the owner he is an old guy which is very unpolite to all clients including us. he stays there watching you eat in the breakfast room he is weird and when you ask him somthing he talks in bad manners . so basically im dissapointed of him being there. pls throw him out. then there where a couple who are very helpfull and always ready to help. Milan is a very nice city but not very clean etc. its good to go to other places like Sondrio for skiiing and Como which i suggest. there is this reataurant next too the hotel which is good i think its called La Villetta , small portions but good not that expensive. Well im still pissed at the old guy at the hotel one thing good to know that he only smiled when we paid him at the end of our trip what a jerk. So whoever is going pls kill him for me. also there is another jerk i bet he is his son he was complaining cause we wanted to book a taxi ooohhh God i Think they should throw out some ppl over there .

Took a chance on a cheap laterooms booking whilst attending a conference. Hadn't visited Milan so had no idea where to stay but this hotel seemed not too far from the central station. The best way to describe Hotel Gala is typically Italian - but this is no bad thing as I found it made a much welcomed change from the stereotypical commercialised hotel chains. Rooms were simple but clean, well stocked with toiletries and came with SKY TV and complimentary wifi which worked well enough for FaceTime. The access to the underground is very convenient as a newly built underground station is literally outside the entrance of the hotel. I was amazed at how close this was and for the price. Breakfast is continental and for the brits wanting milk in their tea or coffee you have to ask for it and I discovered Italians don't like milk in tea.
Overall, the price, service and cleanliness of the rooms is excellent together with the location next to the underground stop.

Room Tip: Higher up the building - noise, if any, travels through the thin-ish walls

My wife and I are true visitors of the Gala hotel, that we picked up from the Michelin guide some 12 years ago. Ever since, this family-run hotel is a good starting point to visit the city. This time, we booked via the "booking.com" website and paid 85 euro's for the night from Friday to Saturday - more expensive than the 58 euro's we paid 1 year back via "initalia" on a Sunday evening. The breakfast has been extended and now includes "würstl" and "crauti" to also satisfy the taste of the Northern Europeans. However, we were less happy with the room we got this time - we had asked for a "matrimoniale", but got a "French bed" with an extremely poor mattress. Let's hope this be the exception for a series of pleasant nights over the past 12 years!

Room Tip: Avoid room 22. The larger rooms in the "single-digit" section of the hotel (e.g., room 4...

I've stayed in hotel Gala for 2 nights with my friends 2 weeks ago.
The location is near Milano Centrale train station and you can directly go in front of the hotel using tram no.5.
It was snowy day in Milano when we stayed in the hotel and the heater inside our room is warm. There are many variety choices of breakfast and you can take water/juice outside the hotel. The staff speaks english very well and the location is near esselunga supermarket if you need something to buy.
The hotel is warm and yes, I recommend this hotel to everyone who want to visit Milano.

A nice family-run hotel near the Central Station and the Garibaldi Station. The building does not go directly to the street. Now the Central Station can be reached by tram number 5, and soon in 50 meters will be opened new subway line station "Marche". Room is equipped well. The bathroom in addition to the shower had separate bath. Have soap, shampoo, shower gel. TV-channels showed programs in different languages, including English, French, and Russian. Breakfast is very good (including fruits, various yogurts, juices in bottles, warm meals). WiFi works well in the room (the code should be taken on reception and is valid for 24 hours), there is one computer with internet access. There were no problems with communication with the staff in English. In order to explore the city you need to use public transport. There is a separate room for baggage storage and a guest toilet.
- There was no toilet paper and soap in the guest toilet.

This hotel has a lot of potential to be a friendly family run business but standards are falling. We have stayed there a few times and usually found it to fit in the `good value for money' category: not luxury, but certainly comfortable for the price we paid. The latest stay there fell short of this test. Cleaners were up very early for a Saturday, lot's of noise from corridors. Water completely stopped while I was showering. Putting the mixer tap into the `cold' position brought a flow of cold water, but in the warm position, no water at all, or just a trickle. On our check-out day, the cleaner was already in our room moving our stuff around while we were having breakfast. Later, in the reception area, I overheard other guests complaining about the cleaners going into their rooms too. The doors don't have security latches so I would be genuinely concerned about the cleaner coming in while having a shower or sleeping late. At check-out, I asked about the hot water problem and I was told that it just happens in the mornings when all the guests are having showers. Having stayed in remote parts of south America and Asia, I know that hotels can provide a consistent supply of hot water at all times of the day. The proprietor wouldn't even talk to me about the problem because he wanted to take other guests to our room, and he tried to speak to my wife in Italian rather than speaking to me directly in English. I asked him if he would provide a discount because of the hot water failure, but he just seemed to be very stressed about this and the demands of other guests and he told us in exasperation that we either pay the full price or we pay nothing but don't come back again. I have the impression that this business is now in a `run until failure' mode, for example, rather than regularly servicing hot water equipment, they are just waiting until it completely blows up and then doing the minimum to band-aid the problem.

Room Tip: facing away from the street, and higher up if you want to be able to leave the window open safely

I chose Hotel Gala because of the great price they had on offer for my August dates, and that great price also included breakfast and free wi-fi in the rooms. I usually go for something a little more luxurious, but the chance to make visible savings for 3 nights and still have all the services I need in a conveniently located hotel, tempted me and I took the risk.

The truth is this is indeed a 3-star hotel and it looks more like a big house than a hotel building - but still most things were quite okay, especially the service. And for the price I paid, I really couldn't expect more.

Wi-fi is really available everywhere, and at a nice speed - the only negative is you need to enter long and difficult names and passwords, and you have to re-log multiple times, especially if you don't work in a browser, but use smartphone or tablet apps, vnc connections or imap mail. But still it performed quite well for my needs.

Breakfast was very good and quite rich - fresh fruits, all the coffee drinks you could expect in Italy, hot meals, salami and cheese, nice bread, fruit juices - to name a few.

Going to the central train station with public transport (and to any airport or other city by train or bus from there) takes about 15-20 minutes by tram or metro, going to the city center takes just just a few more minutes. Tram #5 stops meters from the hotel, the M3 Zara metro station is about 250-300 m away, and the future M5 metro line will stop practically in front of the hotel.

Rooms... well, they are a bit too basic and not too spacious, but still comfortable enough - they provide a minibar (empty, but working, so you can fill it from the nearby supermarket or the hotel lobby), LCD TV (no English or non-Italian channels, sorry) and good inverter A/C (very important in Milan especially in the summer) and a safe deposit-box. The bathroom is better than the room itself, and you even have a bidet!

Overall, the hotel is a very good value for money, but luxury-oriented travellers just won't feel at home here.
