“Great Old European Hotel”
Reviewed 16 April 2011

We stayed here with our two young children and had a great stay. The location couldn't be better, close to the Galleria and the Duomo. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were neat and clean.

We were in Milan for a total of 6 days and it was a conscious effort for us in choosing this hotel, just to experience something different... for anyone choosing to stay at this hotel, bear in mind it is a historic landmark of a hotel, it's been around for a long time, the decor is elegant and classical Italian in style. Location-wise, to me it was wonderful, I didn't want to stay near the Duomo as the area always tends to be chaotic and unpleasant to stay at. The Grand Hotel, in the lovely Quadrilatero area is perfect for us. Close enough to the heart of the city (about a 5-10 minute walk will get you to the Teatro a la Scala, Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle II and the Duomo) yet far away from the tourist chaos that surrounds the Duomo.

This hotel is however not for everyone. Along with its history, it brings along with it some defects and problems... While I love the understated elegance of it all, the lovely antique furniture and gilded mirrors... my husband who loves technology and all that is new, did not quite enjoy the hotel as much as I did, and I can understand why. Showers do not have constant pressure, the water temperatures fluctuate from the extreme hot to the extreme cold (do not flush toilets or use the wash basins while someone is in the shower!!). Air conditioning in the room does not work, and as the weather turned warmer, so did the stuffiness and temperature in the rooms, to the point where, towards the end of our stay and at the beggining of April, it became unbearable. Windows can be opened but it will also let in the traffic noise. Sleep quality - well, the quality of the mattress depends on which rooms you are given. Our stay at the hotel was broken up by a short side trip to Emilia-Romagna. The first part we were given a dark sombre looking room. It had a lovely airy bathroom, but also a lumpy and soft bed, and very dark and heavy furniture. The second room we were given upon our return had a small bathroom, but also an obviously newer posture support (etc.) mattress.

If you are a light sleeper, be forewarned, there IS traffic noise, the rooms are not entirely sound proof. The sound of other guests opening and closing their door also reverberates.

Service wise, while the concierge will answer your questions and make dinner reservations etc, they are not the most friendly or willing to help, I did find them rather unapproachable and they will not go out of their way to assist. On one occasion, we asked for the location of a convenience store, and we were told where it was, but we were not informed that all convenience stores and pharmacies were closed on Sunday, which resulted in a futile search for us.

Overall, I would still say that it was a pleasant stay. Rooms are bigger than the norm, and its in a great location. However, given the price of this hotel, if the comforts of a modern hotel outranks an experience of the old world charm, then I would recommend the Park Hyatt over the Grand Hotel.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share with us your recent experience at our Hotel.

We appreciate your positive comments and on the other side sincerely regret the technology issues that you have suffered for which we would like to extend our sincerest apologies. The Grand Hotel et de Milan is an eighteenth century Milanese mansion, as you well mentioned rich of history and with a great central location.

We do have some weakness of water pressure particularly when the hotel is heavily booked, as it was the case on your recent visit. This problem is soon to be eliminated this next August with the implementation of an engine which will increase the water pressure in all accommodations. Our air conditioning system is also being totally renewed and already three out of five floors have been completed.

We trust that those two major problems of concern will therefore soon been eliminated. Even though a classic style Hotel may not be exactly what you prefer we hope that you will not hold this past visit against us and that you will honor us again when travelling to Milan.

…. and as for the Maestro Giuseppe Verdi who passed away in his dedicated suite in 1901, no ghosts have been reported as of today but your dreams at the Grand Hotel et de Milan may well be accompanied by some arias like “La Traviata”, the “Nabucco” or perhaps the “Aida” (I hope you do not mind this last note of humor).

Yours sincerely,

Antonio Cailotto

The Grand Hotel et de Milan was recommended because it was very close to La Scala and also because it had been the home (temporarily) for Caruso, Maria Callas and Verdi (among others). This was certainly appealing to an opera fan who was also going to attend an event at La Scala. I was rewarded with not only the proximity to the La Scala but a great number of the sights of Milan. I had been told that Milan was a polluted, inudstrial city -- what a misrepresentation. Milan is a delightful city with lots to see and enjoy -- the ability to relax and enjoy was only enhanced by my stay at this hotel. I travel alone and am well aware of the trials and tribulation sometimes encountered by single travellors. I had none of that at the Grand. Everything I asked for -- suggestions for dinner , service requests etc. were handled so professionally. Whilel I did have to leave to return to Canada, I certainly didn't want to have my stay at the Grand end -- I look forward to returning and absorbing some more of this wonderful city and the wonderful people at the Grand.

This was my 3rd stay at the hotel. I always feel welcome, the rooms are charming and the staff amazing. They even have ETRO everything (slippers, shampoo, soaps...). But most importantly is the location, location, location.
I'm going again Jan 2011 and would not consider staying anywhere else!

Our room had two small balconies from which we could see the Duomo (easy walking distance). The welcome dinner for our tour was excellent as was our room. If price is a factor then this hotel may not be suitable, but if location and comfort is most important then we recommend the Grand

I booked the hotel because it was a Leading Hotel and typically one cannot miss with a Leading Hotel. I was right on....I had four travelers at this hotel, all of them VIP's and this was going to be their first stay. The price was very reasonable for Italy, and the location right where they needed to be. I would strongly recommend this hotel to any business traveler. My travelers came back saying that out of all of the hotels that they have visited in MIlan, this was the BEST! Thank you Grand Hotel!

We picked a plush old world hotel for our first stop in Europe to recover from the long haul flights and have a great first taste of Europe. The Grand Hotel et de Milan was perfect. I did a lot of research online to make sure we had a great holiday and really got a hotel that reflected the cities we're visiting and got a great deal on their website which included breakfast and first class rail tickets to Lake Como. We had emails from the concierge before we left to ensure we would have everything we needed.

On arrival in Milan we took public transport into the city and rolled out of the subway and the hotel is literally 10 feet away. Within minutes we're in our lovely room overlooking via Manzoni. Next door is the Armani mothership, the golden triangle of shopping is steps away, the Galleria and La Scala a few hundred metres down the road. As much as we were tired from the trip, we were stoked to have such a lovely room so we hit the streets and were in the Gucci cafe in the Galleria having a heart-starter within 15 minutes.

The breakfast and breakfast room is lovely, staff were ever so helpful, our room large was quiet with opening doors onto the street with little juliet balconies, the bath and couch were put to good use for power naps, and we loved every minute of our stay. Yes the room we stayed in was pre-renovation, but coming from a young country we really valued the history and luxury of the hotel and its fittings. Quality and style last and the Grand Hotel et de Milan has both.

While we don't get to Europe often from Australia, and we have much of the continent yet to explore, we will stop off in Milan for a night on our next trip next year just to stay at the Hotel et de Milan. We also stayed at the Sacher in Vienna and the Stafford in London to give you an idea of the type of hotels we love.
