The Starhotel Splendido has recently (summer 2011) been completely refurbished and renamed the Starhotel Echo. Amazing fresh "new hotel" smell in the entrance. Over road from train station but relatively sound proof. Can feel train vibrations. Recently renovated to a high standard. Clean modern decor. Reasonably price bar - relaxing sofa areas. Breakfast - lots of choice, efficieny staff. 10 minutes from Duomo on (clean and safe) metro system. No tea and coffee in room. Amazing shower. Free internet access in lobby. Helpful info from reception staff. Tip 1: buy a 48 hour metro ticket it staying for the weekend - 8 Euros vs 1.5 Euros per trip otherwise. Tip 2: avoid Noblesse Oblige restaurant around the corner - overpriced, tasteless fish.

I have stayed at StarHotels in Venice, Florence, Napoli and Rome. StarHotel Echo used to be called Starhotel Splendido. It used to be quite good but no longer.

We were checked into a suite which have a faulty alarm. The customer next to us told us that they have been hearing the alarm for the past 3 days and yet the front desk always promised them that it would be resolved but without any action. In fact, they said that the front desk staff were jeering at them and they could sense it from the phone.

We told the front desk about the alarm and the problem with our room. The front desk staff - Simone - instead of being helpful was very rude and even told us that if the person in the next room would tell us to jump, would we do it? We told him that if the alarm sounded in the night, we need to change room. Simone told us that there was no more rooms. He told us that they would look into the problem when we are out for dinner. When we were back, they told us that it is fixed. However, when we entered into the room, the alarm again sounded. We complain to another staff and was given a change from a suite to 2 other rooms. We told the staff that we would like to get back a suite the next day instead of the 2 rooms if possible for all of us to be together in the same floor - we were 5 persons.

When we were checking out, Simone told us that the first night was free but we have to pay for the next day. We told him that we have waited with our luggages packed for our rooms to be changed to the original contract. It is quite amazing that instead of apologizing for the poor service, they wanted to charge us more for a faulty room.

I have never seen such bad service before even as I have been to other Starhotels.

Well designed hotel with great decor and a nice atmosphere. Prices are good value for a renovated hotel although there is not much to do in the area so you need to travel....

Negatives: breakfast staff were rude, the rooms are tiny for Milan standards and the concierge gave bad recommendations on restaurants so trust trip advisor ;)

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for a weekend trip to Milan. The hotel is at a perfect location near the Central train station. We love the modern, boutique hotel style and decoration. The bed and bedding is extremely comfortable and we love how clean and well-maintained it is. We were only at the hotel for sleep so we didn't need the Ritz Carlton style of attention. I felt safe and very comfortable staying there (I'm usually the more skeptical and "higher-maintenance" one...). Cleanliness is also very important to me and this hotel meets the standard! We would definitely stay there again for long weekends in Milano.

My parents and I stayed 5 nights in one of Echo's room's for three adults (triple sharing). We had one king bed and one sofa bed. The hotel is nice and new, a short walk from the Milan Central Station, very modern, beautifully designed and decorated. The rooms were well-appointed, spacious and the beds comfortable. The american breakfast buffet had something for everyone - a couple of us are vegetarians and had a satisfying start to our busy days! This hotel has a lot going for it but for its service - you need to dedicated staff/excellent customer service to provide an exceptional experience to your guests and to ensure that they keep coming back. Overall, things turned sour for me for the following reasons:

1) Check-in took more than 20 minutes - the front desk kept us waiting for the first 15 mins (not a great start after a 15-hour journey to get there). Gave us the room keys and that's it -- nothing about the hotel - breakfast hours, fitness room, apperitivo, etc., etc. I had to call and ask them for everything!

2) In-room Wi-Fi costs 11.50 Euros a day. Only 30 mins free Wi-Fi per day in the lobby area. Understood that they may be targeting the business crowd, but I asked for another 30-min pass and my request was declined :(

3) Room was not cleaned properly on 4 of our 5-nights stay. First day was great, but after we checked-in, housekeeping did a haphazard job. One day, trash was not removed from the bins, one day the sofa bed was not made -- one of us had a cold and some tissue paper was still in the bed (quite appalling to come back to this at the end of the day and to have to call housekeeping to make the bed!), and on most days, we could see that the floors had not been wiped/vacuumed.

4) Towels, Toiletries and In-room Coffee/Tea was not refreshed - We paid for a triple-sharing room and should have received towels and toiletries for three adults. Every single day, I was calling the reception at 11 at night, asking for another towel, more soap, lotion, shampoo, etc. Also, we're tea drinkers, and the tea bags were gone on day one. I had to plead to the reception staff every other day to send a couple of more tea bags to our room. The tea cups and glasses were not replaced during the first 2 days of our stay -- on the 3rd day, I had left a note in the room to the housekeeping staff to please replace with fresh clean cups and glasses for drinking water.

5) Service in the breakfast area on the weekend sucked - the hotel was going full, so if you got there after 9 am, then you were waiting for about 15 mins to get seated. Why? Not because all tables were taken, but because they were not cleaning the tables once the first round of guests had finished. It seemed to me that they were under-staffed and could have handled this better given that the hotel was completely sold out. I even saw guests fighting for a table that had just been cleaned. Guests shouldn't have to do this -- at least not at a supposedly four-star hotel!

6) Fitness room was closed for maintenance work starting day 2 of our trip

For 800 Euros this was a terrible experience in my view. Nice-looking hotel, but no maintenance. I will not be staying at a Starhotel ever again!

The hotel is very new, furnished with good taste and clean. Personnel is also very kind and helpful: I arrived pretty early and they did let me check in without problems. The only thing they should improve is the Internet connectivity: you can have free 30 min. vouchers for the WiFi in the lobby area (slow network) but if you want to connect from your room you can only use Swisscom Hospitality which costs a crazy price
