“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 14 November 2012

Milan was the last stop on our 7 week trip of Europe. We chose this hotel based on Tripadviser recommendations. Good choice, as the hotel was classy, in a good neighbourhood and close to a metro station that took us into the city centre quickly. Our room was spacious, well appointed and just what we needed after a hectic schedule. Staff were very helpful and we found the hotel restaurant good and the prices were very reasonable. Staff also made suggestions about day trips. On their advice we took the hour train trip to Lake Como, which was a fantastic day. The old town of Como is also worth the trip. Overall a really nice hotel in a good price bracket.

We were two friends going to Milan to savour the atmosphere of the city, it's football at the San Siro and a couple of day trips away. We stayed at the Doria Grand for 6 nights. We paid £509 (excluding the 48euro city tax). It would have been slightly cheaper if we hadn't have stayed on the eve of a Champions League football match. (but we were going to the match afterall!)

The room was excellent and spotlessly clean. Sky TV and mini bar. Room wi-fi which was free of charge, although because our room was the furthest from the wireless router, it kept dropping out every 5 minutes (a little annoying but hey ho!). There is also a safe in the room (also free of charge).

Breakfast was good. Fresh juice, coffee, cereals, toast, pastries, fruit, bacon/eggs, yoghurts and more.

The staff on the front desk were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Before booking I read a couple of reviews about bed bugs. Yes, me and my mate were bitten but after a bit of logical thinking and patience, it was acutally the mozzies (or in our case, one mozzie) that inflicted the damage to us. Summary justice was however applied ! It was still warm in Milan so I suggest keep your window closed so they don't come in. It certainly WASN'T an infestation of bed bugs though!

If you want to use this hotel as a base for your travels, then look no further. If you want to walk out of the front door and onto the Duomo, then it's not for you, but you'll pay double for those hotels. Doria Grand is located 100 metres from the Caiazzo tube station which is on the Green line. We used it for the 10 minute trip to Cadorna tube/train station where a one hour train trip (for less than a fiver) will get you to Lake Como.

It's also 200 metres from Loreto tube station which is on the Green and Red line. From Loreto you can be at the Duomo within a 10 minutes tube ride, or within 20 minutes, at Lotto tube station for the San Siro football stadium. Furthermore, the Doria Grand is just a 300 metre, 5 minute walk to Milans central train station. We caught the train from here for a day out to Santa Margherita/Portofino.

If you want to walk to the Duomo, then it's about half an hour. It's all on busy main roads and at no time did we feel threatened, day or night.

All in all, the Doria Grand made for a great stay, and a fantastic base for our citywide (and beyond) travels. Would definately recommend it for friends and family in the future.

Great location, close to the train station, easy walking distance and a really nice looking hotel as you enter the lobby. The staff were helpful, efficient and quickly got us checked in. The room was well appointed with a nice view of the city out our window. It was a nice and good sized room that was very quiet and clean with a large modern bathroom and good fixtures throughout.

We were happy with the hotel, don’t know what else to say really.

The breakfast was very good with lots of selection provided in a nice breakfast room on the 1st floor. If comparing the two hotels we stayed in in Milan, Una Century and ADI Doria Grand, Una Century wins best breakfast, best bath products and largest room, there was a tie for price, location and quietness and ADI Doria Grand wins everything else.

This was a very nice hotel costing 118 Euros (which included internet). We would recommend it and we would stay here again.

Previous Hotel – Murano Palace, Venice (Murano Island) Italy
Next Hotel – Sleeping in our own bed next.

Good price, low value, never had a room cool. Breakfast buffet was full of variety but lacked quality food. Staff was inconsistent, asked for towels - never received them. Bed was solid as a board. Not bad but combination of no A/C and hard bed made sleeping problematic. Location was the saving amenity. Easy to walk to underground and to good shopping, also safe! I'll look for an upgrade next trip.

Room Tip: Grocery store across the street and stay away for food and beverage service in room and hotel.

This hotel has a great location within a 5 minute walk of Central Train Station. The room was a nice size and quiet. The room was sporadic cleaned. After a full morning andafter of sight seeing, we returned to our room at 2:30. The room was not cleaned and no attempt was made to so do. Oh well, what was particularly distressing was the fact that the staff was not helpful. We were entitled to a welcome drink, we went to the bar and was told that it was closed. The next day we were told that the offer had expired. The Front Desk staff was worse, they were not helpful and provided contradictory information. We were better off asking for help from 'the locals', which we did. In the end, two women guests were muggged near the hotel on our last day. The police were not helpful, the manager was and acted as an interpreter. We are not convinced that the cost was commensurate with the level of service. Although it was advertised that there was A/C, it was minimual -- thankfully, although it was very humid, the temperature never exceed 78 F/23C. We are from Boston, MA.

Room Tip: Better rooms, upper floors, back of the hotel -- the street is very busy day and night.

It was lovely falling into our comfortable bed at the four-star Doria Grand upon arriving in Milan at 11pm after almost two days of travelling from New Zealand. We woke refreshed and were delighted to find a beautiful breakfast buffet with everything from scrambled eggs to pastries. The hotel is not far from Milan's central railway station so we were able to walk there, which is preferable than paying the often high cost of a taxi in Italy (save the dollars for buying some chic clothes while in Milan). It's a pleasant 45-minute walk from the historic centre, past many lovely shops and a park, but if you don't like walking there is a metro line which is close to the hotel. If you don't have a laptop with you, you can use the computer in the hotel's office which is handy.

Who wants to stay "near" a large train station in Italy? No one. They're grungy and you don't meet the best people. But this hotel is just 5 mins from the central Milano station and it's lovely. Everything in the hotel feels "old world" and comfortable. Nothing fancy (eg, no electronic keys, you get a large tassled key ring). My room was clean and neat. The mattress was firm and the price was great. Breakfast was sumptuous and the service was superb.
