“Hotel with climate and perfect location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2013

When you come there you will feel the climate like from 30' years of XX century. Rooms are decorated with a rich style, beds are enormous and bathroom whole in marble.

Breakfast was good

Location is very nice for shopping - just start at Corso Buenos Aires and go ob foot to the center or take a tube.

I suggest taking the parking (as this is very difficult to park in this area which also is paid). Parking cost around 30e a day. Descending in narrow slide - to the 6 th floor below - breathtaking :)

Dear “Kamil77”,
thank you so much for taking the time to write about our hotel and to express your appreciation of the style of the hotel. I know that there aren’t many hotels in Milan that still reflect the golden age of hotel hospitality.

We find that our hotel is especially favoured by clients arriving by car. We are one of the few hotels in the city offering considerable parking facilities ( 184 spaces ) and in addition, one is not obliged to pay the City toll for the congestion charge are the hotel is on the limit of this area. Having parked one’s car, it is a quick 10 minute tube ride to the city center on line No 1 and we are also close to the No 3 and No 2 metro lines should one wish to reach any other part of the city. Be it the Fairgrounds or the San Siro stadium, etc.

Thank you once again for writing about the Doria Grand Hotel and we look forward to welcoming you back some time in the near future.

Best regards

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2013

We were in Milan for 4 nights over Christmas. After a long day of traveling, we arrived in the evening and were greeted by friendly staff and got our room straight away.
Hotel is quite big and thankfully, quiet....except for the numerous police and ambulance calls with their sirens on the go.
ROOM:
It was no fancier than a Travelodge, but the decor was interesting (fabric padded wallpaper) and it had a mini bar. However, the real downside was that it smelled of cigarette smoke. It was embedded in the headboard and wall fabrics.
We avoided the expense of the mini bar and room service (you can order restaurant menu food for a slightly higher price of about 2-3 euros).
Travel toiletries (soaps and shampoos) were provided and changed daily.
The safe in the room actually worked!
The tv had a few channels including BBC World News and MTV. I saw a lot of football goal repeats....
There is also a radio thing in the wall, so you could listen to music from a few stations whilst chilling in the tub.
The bed was two twin beds pushed together. That was no problem. It just made the bed large enough to sleep in separate post codes.
Pillows were the hardest I think I have ever had to try to sleep with. I managed, but they were not at all soft.
INTERNET: Rubbish. Kept on dropping the signal and every time you went to use it, you had to log in with the username and password. Note that if my phone was logged in, my boyfriend was unable to log in with his phone as apparently I was hogging the username. Needless to say we didn't bother to attempt a Skype chat with my family on Christmas day because it was so poor.

FOOD:
Breakfast was fine. AMAZING coffee. Plenty of pastries, some cold meats and cheeses, cereals, yogurt pots, fresh fruit (and by fresh I mean tinned and a fruit stand of actual apples and oranges) and a small hotplate of scrambled eggs, streaky bacon and chopped sausages. The hot stuff wasn't that hot. I stuck with the fruit and pastries. My boyfriend tried pretty much everything else.
We didn't try the Bistro (which was open every night) because it was 19 euros for a chicken breast and from experience, that might have been ALL that came on the plate as potatoes and veg seem to be side orders in Milan....

TRANSPORT:
Shuttle buses from airport were 16 euros return from Malpensa
Metro had Festive day tickets (24 hours) for 4.50 but we had difficulty acquiring them as the screens are all in Italian and when you opt for English, the descriptions are all in Italian.
Advice: Buy tickets from the newsstand. You will get what you want this way. (Normally 5.50 euros)
Bus tickets: When at the Lake Como bus station, we had to buy bus tickets from what looked like the lottery counter next to the coffee bar. Make sure you get a return ticket or the bus driver is less than pleased.
Train Tickets: If you buy them and don't have a seat reservation on the ticket, you need to validate by going to a machine that stamps it. Just saying.

NEARBY:
Very close to a couple of metro stations on the green and red lines. 5 mins walk from Corsa Buenos Aires (the main shopping street). About 40 mins walk to the Duomo Milano (we weren't sure of public transport on Christmas Day, so we walked it, passing by lots of different types of shops). Duomo was open (free entry) on Christmas Day.
The castle is a few stops away and only 3 euros (1.50 with my student card) gets you a ticket to enter ALL the castle museums including the Museum of Ancient Art (hello Da Vinici ceilings and Michaelangelo sculptures!)
All shops were closed Christmas and Boxing Day.
The train station is a few hundred yards down the road, so Boxing day was a trip to Lake Como (42.50 euros for both of us, return, first class). Everything was closed, so we took a bus up the left side of the lake and got off at Menaggio for some nice views (had missed the last bus to Bellagio, best views in Italy).

RESTAURANTS:
The popular restaurants as per Trip Advisor were closed over the holidays, leaving us to fend for ourselves and find something that was a)open, b) not rubbish.
Thankfully, the Kitchen was open boxing day. We went to the Navigli District for dinner on our last night. Our preference (Joe's) was also closed. Went to La Ricette di Mame.

Dear “Sammej79”,

I would like to thank you for taking the trouble to write your detailed description of your stay at the Doria Grand Hotel in Milan. I am sure readers of Tripadvisor will find your comments as useful as we have.

We were sorry to read that your room smelt of smoke as we are very careful to allocate smoking rooms whenever necessary and carry out specific cleaning for these rooms in order to ensure that all our rooms have a fresh smell at all times.

We were also very disappointed to read that you had difficulties with the free Wi-Fi connection in your room and we are looking into this so as to ensure that your experience does not happen to anyone else.

I trust that these did not ruin your stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back some time soon.

Best regards,
Giacomo Bertolio – Sales & Marketing Office

We traveled with another couple on a two-week tour of Italy, done on our own. We picked this hotel because of its location to the train station (only three blocks away--we walked) and Metro (one block) and reviews on TripAdvisor. It was also the least expensive hotel during our stay. We were only spending one night in Milan and taking a train the next morning to Venice. We arrived at about 9:30 a.m. after an overnight flight from New York and a 1 hour bus ride from the Milan airport. The staff greeted us warmly and our rooms were ready and available for us. Perfect since we wanted to catch a catnap and freshen up before our afternoon walking tour of Milan. The room was perfect, not too big but not small either. The staff was extremely helpful as we had some trouble trying to reach our tour guide who we were supposed to meet at 2 p.m. They were able to reach her for us and our guide met us at our hotel. We hired her through ToursbyLocals which I would highly recommend. While she was expensive, it was great to have a four on one experience. She was thoroughly knowledgeable about Milan and Italian history in general and took us to many of the major sites. One thing I would mention is that if you want to see Da Vinci's Last Supper, you need to make a reservation at least two months ahead of time. Regretfully, we were not able to secure a reservation. The buffet breakfast was excellent and the waitstaff most accommodating. All told, it was a wonderful way to begin our trip.

We arrived early In the morning after a 13 hour flight and they provided us with a room straight away. The room was lovely and so were the staff. My only complaint - the showers would run hot and cold. The temperature was never consistent. Also, we were provided with free wireless Internet but it continued to drop out and sometimes we couldn't access the Internet at all. The hotel was close to the Metro and within walking distance of one of the main shopping streets. Generally a very pleasant stay.

I like the quiet location of this hotel. It was very easy to find with a big Doria Grand Hotel sign. Hotel was perfectly located about 500m away from the central Milan station, where the airport shuttle buses are. However, hotel is quite far from the central shopping and attractions of Milan, like the Duomo, Brera and Navigli. There is a metro station nearby the hotel called Caiazzo (green line) which could easily bring us to all parts of Milan. One would think that the direction towards the central station of Milan would be fun with all sorts of restaurants, but it was on the other side of the entrance of the hotel, leading to a street that could go all the way to the Duomo, which was full with shops, charming cafes and at that time, there was also a Xmas market.
When it comes to the interior, I find this hotel very old-fashioned, also with the room decor. They use those big keys chains, maybe charming for some but not for me. My friend and I had a standard room which at that moment, I was glad that I was not travelling with my husband and baby at such small space. The bed mattress was quite hard, which I had quite some difficulty in sleeping well. The tv, with the use of the satellite box, was pretty confusing and at one time, we could not even turn on the tv to the channel we wanted like BBC or some English ones. Then the internet connection is not really that stable and has to be signed in after 1/2 hr. However, the room was cleaned very nicely.
As for breakfast, I was very happy with the 2 cups of cappucino I had. There were diverse types of croissants and breads. As for the choice of eggs, they had only scrambled eggs and another warm food were the sausages, which I find to be quite limited. But I do not need too many variation of food during breakfast, and this was good enough for me.
It would have been nice if such a big hotel has a sauna and an indoor pool facilities. During my friend's first night in this hotel in Milan, she got a coffee/tea facilities without having to pay extra. Then she went to Verona for a few nights and came back again for more nights at this hotel, where I came travelling with her as well. The 2nd room was not equipped with coffee/tea facilities and when we asked the reception, he told us to pay an extra charge of 25 euros, which we find this appaling! Such facility should be included in the room, especially when it is so cold outside, that we can have some hot tea in the comfort of our room.

Room Tip: I liked the room view of 730, which is facing the residential area and pretty quiet.

The hotel is good and comfortable; we only stayed there for one night.
It has a parking garage but you can park on the street on front as well, just watch the park meter.
The price is above the rest of Italy but everything is in Milano.
The hotel is walking distance to all major spaces in Milano and you can walk all the way to the Duomo cathedral, and pass thou all the major fancy stores…
Clean and good, recommended.

Milan was the last stop on our 7 week trip of Europe. We chose this hotel based on Tripadviser recommendations. Good choice, as the hotel was classy, in a good neighbourhood and close to a metro station that took us into the city centre quickly. Our room was spacious, well appointed and just what we needed after a hectic schedule. Staff were very helpful and we found the hotel restaurant good and the prices were very reasonable. Staff also made suggestions about day trips. On their advice we took the hour train trip to Lake Como, which was a fantastic day. The old town of Como is also worth the trip. Overall a really nice hotel in a good price bracket.
