My wife and I recently visited Milan and opted to stay at the Hotel Berna, a decision based largely on the views and comments of other Tripadvisor members and the fact that we were able to get good rates throught Booking.com. We stayed for three nights, then had a two-night break in Bergamo before returning to the Berna for a further two nights before returning home.
To be honest, we were slightly apprehensive about the hotel's proximity to the main railway station, with all the horror stories we'd heard about that place, but we needn't have worried. Not only was the station itself nothing like as bad as we'd been led to believe - sure, there are some unsavoury characters hanging around, and you do need to watch your back some of the time - but we never felt threatened at any time. The main advantage, of course, is that the Berna is only a few minutes easy walk from Milano Centrale, a really big plus when you're new in town.
Anyway, back to the hotel. When we arrived a week ago (Friday 14 September) we'd had a very long day, it was about 7.30pm, and just wanted to check in and dump our bags so we could catch a meal and a glass of wine or two before hitting the sack. The staff at the hotel were utterly amazing, all of them, but as Cesare was the first staff member we had contact with, he gets a special mention! He took care of us from the word go, and best of all, we were given a free upgrade to the Tower rooms across the street from the main hotel. The rooms there really are special. Check-in was speedy and effortless.
The buffet breakfast was like nothing we'd ever seen - tables bursting with food of the very best quality and variety, and some of the most attentive staff we've ever come across. We had five mornings of Berna's buffets and our expanded waistlines are living proof of that!
Our second stay at the Berna later in the week was just as delightful, even though this time we were given just a standard room (which, after all, was what we had paid for) in the main hotel. Here again, this room was very well appointed and we lacked for nothing in the way of comfort.
The hotel is very close to the Metro, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area if you want to venture out (some better than others, of course, and the more obvious 'tourist traps' are best avoided - in particular there is one right across from the main hotel whose name escapes me, but don't touch it with a barge pole). If you like Chinese, head up towards the station, go right on Via Vitruvio, stay on the right-hand side of the street and keep walking for a few minutes until you reach the DA XIN (V. Vitruvio 30). It looks very unprepossessing from the outside but the interior is quite delightful, and the food is to die for - for sure, the cheapest we had in Milan, with good-sized spring rolls at 1 euro and mains ranging from 4-6 euros, and rice for 1 euro 50. Amazingly good value, and very, very tasty to boot.
We hope to go back to Milan next year, even if only to use the city as a jumping-off point for other destinations in northern Italy, and we can be secure in the knowledge that we have found a perfect home-from-home in the form of the Hotel Berna. We cannot wait to go back. Very strongly recommmended.
