“Excellent hospitality in Milano”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

We could not have hoped for a better welcome than we had from all the staff at Hotel Berna. They were so friendly and helpful which was just what we weary travelers needed. It was walking distance from the train station and had the best service we have had in Europe so far. Complimentary water, soft drinks and juice in the mini bar and complimentary slippers too. Brilliant breakfast with so much choice, again with friendly staff. Would 100% recommend Hotel Berna to everyone.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent!

About the best place to stay ever. Nice room, friendly staff, a short walk to the central train station, free mini-bar, wonderful appetizers with paid evening drinks, coffee/tea in the room, and the best breakfast of our three weeks of touring Italy.

My wife and I recently visited Milan and opted to stay at the Hotel Berna, a decision based largely on the views and comments of other Tripadvisor members and the fact that we were able to get good rates throught Booking.com. We stayed for three nights, then had a two-night break in Bergamo before returning to the Berna for a further two nights before returning home.

To be honest, we were slightly apprehensive about the hotel's proximity to the main railway station, with all the horror stories we'd heard about that place, but we needn't have worried. Not only was the station itself nothing like as bad as we'd been led to believe - sure, there are some unsavoury characters hanging around, and you do need to watch your back some of the time - but we never felt threatened at any time. The main advantage, of course, is that the Berna is only a few minutes easy walk from Milano Centrale, a really big plus when you're new in town.

Anyway, back to the hotel. When we arrived a week ago (Friday 14 September) we'd had a very long day, it was about 7.30pm, and just wanted to check in and dump our bags so we could catch a meal and a glass of wine or two before hitting the sack. The staff at the hotel were utterly amazing, all of them, but as Cesare was the first staff member we had contact with, he gets a special mention! He took care of us from the word go, and best of all, we were given a free upgrade to the Tower rooms across the street from the main hotel. The rooms there really are special. Check-in was speedy and effortless.

The buffet breakfast was like nothing we'd ever seen - tables bursting with food of the very best quality and variety, and some of the most attentive staff we've ever come across. We had five mornings of Berna's buffets and our expanded waistlines are living proof of that!

Our second stay at the Berna later in the week was just as delightful, even though this time we were given just a standard room (which, after all, was what we had paid for) in the main hotel. Here again, this room was very well appointed and we lacked for nothing in the way of comfort.

The hotel is very close to the Metro, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area if you want to venture out (some better than others, of course, and the more obvious 'tourist traps' are best avoided - in particular there is one right across from the main hotel whose name escapes me, but don't touch it with a barge pole). If you like Chinese, head up towards the station, go right on Via Vitruvio, stay on the right-hand side of the street and keep walking for a few minutes until you reach the DA XIN (V. Vitruvio 30). It looks very unprepossessing from the outside but the interior is quite delightful, and the food is to die for - for sure, the cheapest we had in Milan, with good-sized spring rolls at 1 euro and mains ranging from 4-6 euros, and rice for 1 euro 50. Amazingly good value, and very, very tasty to boot.

We hope to go back to Milan next year, even if only to use the city as a jumping-off point for other destinations in northern Italy, and we can be secure in the knowledge that we have found a perfect home-from-home in the form of the Hotel Berna. We cannot wait to go back. Very strongly recommmended.

The attention to detail that Hotel Berna places on everything is second to none. Fantastic staff, rooms are modern and clean. I even received a personalized welcome sheet with a map of Milan, directions to get to the Duomo, hotel details, etc. The sheets on the bed were so soft! All non-alcoholic beverages were free from the mini-bar too. Breakfast was a jaw dropper...what a treat! In the three weeks we were in Italy it was so nice to walk into such a wonderful breakfast buffet. The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk from both the train and metro station. It was an easy four stops (10 mins) on the metro to get down to the Duomo. I say this because during our time in Italy we were often staying at hotels that were closer to the attractions that we were interested in seeing. In this particular case, I am so glad we made the decision to stay at Hotel Berna. Thanks Hotel Berna for making our stay so memorable!

We were very happy with our stay at Hotel Berna. We loved the attention to detail right down to the choice of pillows and room temperature. Unfortuntely we had to leave very early the next morning and did not get to experience the buffet breakfast. We were however provided with a breakfast pack to take with us which seemed to have been missing some items but we appreciated the gesture. We would definitely stay at the Hotel Berna on our next visit to Milan.

Milan was our last stop in Italy. We planned our trip around a La Scala ballet performance and tickets to the Last Supper. Hotel Berna was a delight. Our room was in the 4-star tower across the street from the main hotel entrance, the upgrade I would recommend. Everyone at the front desk bent over backwards to help us. We purchased the "Love Bird" package, where they decorated our room with chocolates and provided us with a bottle of champagne. How neat! Our room was modern and clean with the most comfortable bed, towels and pillows of our trip. It also came with luxurious terry cloth robes, and bath slippers. The management emailed us with many choices to make prior to our arrival, and the housekeeping staff was terrific.Breakfast buffet was the best we had in all of Italy and came with a huge selection of eggs, meats, cereals, pastries, fruits, hot and cold drinks, even fat-free milk and chocolate almond wedges which guests wrapped in napkins and surreptitiously (they thought) pocketed to take with them. Oops. We did that too!
