We went to The Small based on the reviews and everything was true. Alessandro is an amazing host like we have never experienced before. The food was a delight and although we couldn't eat any more Ale bought us a slice of cheesecake to share with a mischievous " why not".he did not even charge us for it.
We loved The Small so much before we left we booked for our last night in Milan. You just have to go!

Having spent the weekend in Milan and visiting many amazing places I can honestly say that this restaurant was the highlight of our trip, I still get a warm glow thinking about it 6 days after our visit.

From the second you walk in you are made to feel special and extremely welcome. The food was excellantly cooked, very fresh and tasted divine. The wine recommendations complemented our food choices perfectly.

However it is the decor, the atmosphere and the wonderful Alessandro who make this an essential part of any trip to Milan. Alessandro clearly loves his restaurant and as a result works extremely hard to ensure that everyone else feels the same way after they have left, he definately succeeded the night we were there. I honestly can not remember having a better experiance in a restaurant, a mixture of a divine meal, a theatre experiance and an art gallery all rolled into one room.

Booking is essential, I am so glad we went

The Small is indeed small. So small that you must book in advance, and cannot complain if you show up and won't find a table. But booking it is absolutely worth it: the way you will be welcomed and assisted, cuddled, surprised by the owner Alessandro is truly amazing. The interior will catch your attention; the food will please your mouth; the wine is really worth a glass at least. The Small is a traditional though very unique experience that represents to me the very essence of that Italian hospitality, which is well known all over the world.

Everything about the evening was perfect. It felt like Ale and his staff were friends who had invited us in to their home. Charming quirky decor, the place is indeed small, so make sure you book. Ale is a charming host, making everyone feel immediately welcome. He sat down to explain the menu to us and made informed wine choices for our selection. I was there with a group of friends and we shared plates of fresh, creamy burata cheese, contrasted with juicy tomato bruschetta. I then had a sicilian pasta dish with small plate-shaped pasta with tomato and sauage ragu. Other friends had poached chicken in a vegetable broth, rich carrot soup with prawns. The menu is small, but varied, with many recipes originating from Ale's sicilian heritage. Ingrediants were sourced locally where possible.

Desserts were also delicious and displayed in a glass cabinet so you could see exactly what you were ordering - a rich, baked cheesecake, gluten-free chocolate cake, summer fruit crumble cake were some of the options on display.

The restaurant is easy to find - just 30 seconds away from Loreto metro stop. If you are in Milan just go to this place - you won't be disappointed.

I visited The Small with 7 girlfriends last weekend. We were charmed by everything about it. From the quirky art, the penguin made from soft mints, the mismatched antique plates and chairs to the wonderful owner and staff. The menu was a delight with varied choice and a mix of traditional with a modern twist and the food certainly did not dissapoint, every course was a delight. The owner was happy to tweak dishes to suit and recommend wines and food choices. One of our party was overheating a little (it was 37 degrees C!) and he fanned her rather charmingly so she could finish her meal in comfort. I can't think of anything else to say, this place is an absolute gem and a delight, my only regret it that it's a little to far for me to visit regularly! Definitely a Milan must do! We spent 50 Eur pp although we did drink quite a bit
