After three days in Rome, my sister and I took the Eurostar Italia all the way to Milan, intending to make that city our base of operations for exploring northern Italy.
We had had a mixed experience with our Rome hotel, so we didn't expect much of Hotel Cervo. When we arrived (5 minute walk from Repubblica Metro) we were pleasantly surprised that the rooms were comfortable and big enough for the suitcases, the bathroom was nicely tiled and clean, heating and windows worked perfectly and so. Staff was also very helpful in getting us a cab to Linate Airport on our last day. Our room looked over to Piazza Principessa Clotilde, which was a nice sight. Milan is a wonderful and quaint city.
We didn't try the breakfast, because everyday we took the first train either to Florence or Venice and missed the breakfast schedule.

We stayed at the hotel at the beginning and end of our stay. The daytime staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Their smiles were welcome after a long flight. Checkin was smooth and they were helpful with getting us oriented to Milan. Restaurants are a few blocks away (look at Da Cecco) and there is a supermarket next door. It was quiet for a big city. Not sure why others found the neighborhood scary, but we walked all around late into the evening and never felt unsafe. There were no unsavory characters hanging around. For the record, we usually stay in modest hotels within this price range. I am ranking it 4 because I think it is above average for similar hotels. I agree with many other reviewers that the rooms and the bathrooms are small. Our first room (219) was small, the last room was bigger (107) with a table where we could enjoy our last picnic dinner. For the price, the hotel was definitely a good value. It is an old hotel and it appeared that they were in the process of redoing some of the rooms. Rooms in old, budget, European hotels will always be small as will the bathrooms. The bathroom was about on par with what we have encountered in similar hotels. The room was clean and the only complaint was a slight smell in the bathroom from the sewers - another thing encountered in other older European hotels. This was only true of the first room. We enjoyed the breakfast and it ranked above other breakfasts we had on this trip. and on par with budet hotesl. Juice is not fresh, but reconstituted. This again is what we have encountered at all hotels with a few exceptions unless you stay at a 4 or 5 star hotel. Coffee was good and there was fresh fruit, cereal, hard boiled eggs and pastries.
tip: As mentioned by others, it is very convenient to transportation. Buy the 24 hour pass at the tabachi for the metro/bus/tram for 4.5 Euros and hop on and off as you please. If you arrive at the central train station, take the #9 tram instead of the metro. Much easier with luggage. Follow the signs in the train station for buses (right hand side as you face the front of the terminal from inside). The tram is across the street and is usually waiting as this is the end of the line. The sign on the tram will say P. Genova. Take the tram about 4 stops to Monte Santo and get off. If it makes a left turn you have gone too far. After getting off the tram, go to your right about 1 block to the hotel. If you take the metro, get off at Repubblica. We got lost. The best thing is to go up to the republica plaza. The big wide street is Via Pisani. Walk away from the train station on this street (look down the street and you will see a white building a few blocks away - that is the station) a block or so until you reach Monte Santo and turn right. A fun thing to do is take the #9 all the way to the other end. You get a view of day to day Milan and at P. Genova you can walk a couple of blocks to the canal district. It appears to be an up and coming neighborhood with many restaurants along the canal. Good Gelato at Ciiuri Ciuri at Viale Gorizia 3

Hotel room was very small and old looking but clean. Bathroom was clean and spacious compared to the room though the bathroom didn't have a real door; thick sliding plastic door curtain. Our room didn't get much sunlight as there was a heavy wooden curtain covering on the outside. The beds were soft which was fine b/c no backache the next day for me but my friend had to remove the bed mattress and slept on the harder bed surface. Note no safe in the room. Breakfast was included and was probably the nicest breakfast I have had in my travels to Europe. Same selection each day; a few fresh food and hot options. There was a sign for free wi-fi, but didn't try it. There is a tiny lift in the hotel.
Closest metro stop is Republica. Hotel will be on your right hand side. It's also 3 stops to Duomo and the shopping area. A few doors further down is a Carrefour supermarket.
Reception was friendly and recommended good places to eat. They told us close to the area on the street C.So Como near the metro stop Garibaldi F.S. was a good place for nightlife. We walked around on a non weekend and it looked like it would be lively place on the weekend. So, would recommend checking out if you are staying at the hotel on a weekend.
2 restaurants the hotel recommended: The Friends Pub, 2 doors down was a good place for lunch (salads and sandwiches). Recommend trying the piadina (type of italian flatbread). I got the Crudello and it was good and large that i couldn't even finish. Da Cecco Restuarant/Pizzeria on Via Solferino good for dinner; read separate review.

Room Tip: The hotel layout on the bottom floor is like a U shape where the exit is at only at one end so if yo...

we went to the cervo hotel in Milan. Reading other comments from users we thought it was close to the main amenities: train station and milan's historical center.
The garibaldi train station is a 10 minute walk, which is not the closest subway station. a 3-4 minute walk is the republica station which will lead you anywhere and right on the red line which has several station in the city center.
while the reception and common areas are of good standing the reception was just pleasant enough to give us the keys (actual mechanical key) but all that quite alright.
a tiny 2 persons elevator would bring us to our floor.
We were disappointing by the room. In front of the entrance of the queen bedroom room we booked was a 4 pieces bathroom that did not close with a door but a harden curtain, while clean the room was very mouldy around the bath tube. The rest of the room consisted of the bed, a desk and a closet all crammed in a small room which I suppose is typical of older hotel. To sum up, the room was clean, old fashioned (flowery wallpaper) and a mouldy bathroom.
Breakfast was part of our package and was served between 7 and 10 in a nicely decorated room in contrast with the mediocre food we found, good cafe, some bread, cereal and awful juices.
Outside the area offered not so many restaurants, only a few places worth going on an italian food trip.
Overall all was just average if not taking into account the not very nice bathroom. I will surely never be a first choice in my next trip in Milan due to the location and service.

Room Tip: try to get a room with a view on the arch (porta nova)

We stayed one night during our transit home from a ski vacation and we thought the hotel was good value for money.
Location is 5 min from the Metro that takes 5-10 minutes down to The Duomo in the centre.

There are many restaurants and shops in the area around the hotel.
We ate at Ristorante Piazza Repubblica that we found to be good and are happy to recommend.

Very good breakfast – unusually good for Italy.

We were three and the hotel had rooms with three real beds.
