“Absolutely great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

For my entire business trip to Milan (three weeks), Caffe Nazionale has been my favorite restaurant. It's rare to find in a single restaurant a perfect combination of ambiance, decor, service, food and hospitality: have dinner at Caffe Nazionale and you will find all of them, at an excellent level. The two owners will make you feel at home, and even if you're alone, you'll feel in a family. Keep up the good work!

“Bravo Il Caffe Nazionale”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2013

My wife and I went to Il Caffe Nazionale in September 2013 and had the best time!
From the moment of arrival the staff were so attentitive and such fun. They spoke good english and recommended both great dishes and superb wine for us. Plus devine desserts.
Lots of laughs and so welcoming we'll definitely go back if we returm to Milan.

“Cozy and nice place for an excellent dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2013

It's not easy to find places like this in Milan nowadays. Still traditional in the environment but modern in the menu (fish carpaccio, lots of vegetarian dishes) with a great selection of wines - also given the price range.
The staff is super kind and welcoming and the food is delicious, especially recipes with fish.
The best pat is the price - no bad surprises at the a end of this pleasant dining experience.
Very recommended!

“home from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2013

happily I live near enough to this restaurant that if I don't want to coom but want food that feels home cooked I head here.
The menu doesn't vary much but is varied enough to satisfy most needs. The fish is super fresh and excellent, both smoked and fresh. The pasta is good though I tend to go for starters and mains.
The wine list is both extensive enoug to satisy varied tastes and good enough to satisfy refined palates
This evening I had a mussel and clam dish in tomato and garlic sauce, the portions are generous and come accompanied with bread and fresh white pizza.
Kids and dogs are welcome, the pizzas are excellent and the 'erotic' potatoes to die for. For my tastes the desserts all pre manufactured leave a little to be desired.
If you are lucky enough to be there on an evening when the waiter Jamie sings, then you won't leave, and on occasionaly evening a whiskey drinking doctor lopes in and plays some piano as he doesn't have one at home, classic Italian!

The atmosphere is both intimate and friendly although I happily take my kids too, and in the warmer months they have two outside set ups.

“Easter Sunday Dining Solo in Milan: Unforgettable Hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2012

My travel plans for Easter Sunday had hit a last-minute snag, and I found myself alone in Milan, but I did not want to miss celebrating Easter in Italy. As a professional classical vocalist, the opportunity to be at the Duomo was very appealing; however, my friend (with her car) had been called away, and I had no transportation. If any of the tabacs in the neighborhood had been open, I might have purchased a bus ticket, but everything seemed to have shut down for Easter. Thus, I decided to attend whichever local church was the closest, and descended onto the street. I could hear church bells pealing, and set off for the nearest piazza, map in hand.

I had just spent three weeks in Firenze, which is small and intimate, and you can walk everywhere. Milan is not like that at all. People walk quickly and with purpose; they're busy, they're no-nonsense hard workers, and they're not as likely to stop and help a tourist with a quizzical expression, especially on Easter Sunday. When I saw a open restaurant, I asked directions of the waiter who was setting up the outside tables, and after some consultation with the owner, they pointed me toward a church.

After a lovely Mass, my stomach reminded me that I had not eaten since the previous afternoon, and I recalled the restaurant I had passed on my way to church. The same waiter and owner were there, and welcomed me as if I were an old friend. When they asked how many were dining, and I said I was "da solo" (by myself), they responded that I would never feel alone when I dined with them. The Italians really have a way of making you feel that they are sincere when they say this!

They set me up at an elegantly-laid table under an awning that proclaimed "Veuve Cliquot" (how could I go wrong?) and presented a lovely menu in Italian with English translations. Note: I am also an English language immersion teacher, and nearly lost it when I saw "erotic potatoes with rosemary." Mmm! (I wish I'd taken a photo. I am still chuckling.)

About three months ago, I switched to a mostly vegetarian diet, which can be tough in Italy, where menus are heavy with fine cuts of red meat. When the owner suggested a meat dish and I replied that I would prefer vegetarian options if possible, he took over the selection of my food, and customized a truly fabulous meal. The salad was large, healthy, and sumptuous. The breads were many, and hot from the oven. The pasta was spicy, al dente, and garnished with freshly shaved cheese. I even broke my pattern of never ordering dessert, and indulged in some amazing layered chocolate confection with creams and custards and oozing something alcoholic, warm and good. Total bill, including cover: 28.50

During my two-hour lunch, many other people were seated: families who obviously had made reservations. I don't like eating by myself in restaurants, but never felt alone in this one, due to the friendly presence of the young waiters and the owner, who came over several times just to chat. (It helped that I speak low intermediate Italian.)

I had everything I needed on this day: friendly directions to help me find where I needed to go, an open table at a classy restaurant, kind attention, a customized meal, delicious food, a reasonable bill, and the feeling that I had experienced a different kind of Easter, and that it had been perfect after all.
