“Worst ever. Terrible experience! Sleazy!”
Reviewed 14 June 2006

Does not deserve 2-star rating.

This was the WORST MOTEL we have ever been to. I would rather sleep on the street. Avoid this torture at all costs. Don't ruin your Milan experience. And don't come here if you plan on getting any sleep.

We stayed here for 5 torturous nights. We are in our mid-twenties. We travel quite often, on a budget. We are not too picky. But, this was just unbearable.

We got the impression that Trieste is the kind of sleazy motel where people come to have sex.

Of course, we wanted to leave this motel the first night, when we froze to death, and couldn't sleep because of various people having sex, loud moaning, screaming and other noises. Unfortunately, we were unable to find another hotel because everything was booked up solid due to the IT conference. As a result, we were stuck here for five iong nights.

Here are the problems:

1. Unbearable temperature, Freezing in the room. Motel does not provide heat. We were here in October. It was quite cold outside (about 55-60 F at night). The motel did not turn on the heat at all. Temperature in the room was about 60 degrees F as well. (I am not exaggerating). In the middle of the night, each night, I would get out of bed, frozen, go downstairs, beg the front desk manager to turn on the heat. Sometimes he did, for an hour or so, sometimes he didn't. Their answer to my request was, they ran out of oil, so they are conserving on the heat until they get more oil delivered. It was unbearably cold. The first night, I called the front desk, they said there was nothing that could be done. In desperation, I turned on the hair drier for a few hours in order to try to warm up the room.

I tried talking about this issue with different managers, but they continued to ignore my requests. Other guests in the motel complained too. All they did was offer us an extra blanket. For all 5 nights we were here, I had to request that the heat be turned on. At best, they turned on heat for 1 hour and then kept it off for the rest of the night. I would like to point out that the heat was on in the lobby and it was nice and warm.

We asked the front desk whether they can provide an electric heater for our room. They refused, saying it was against the law.

We had nowhere to go. Desperate, we bought an electric heater (inexpensive). From then on, we were nice and warm. Problem was solved.

2. NO SOUND INSULATION AND LOTS OF NOISE. You can hear EVERYTHING that is happening in the motel, in the adjacent rooms, in the hallway, on the staircase. SInce this is a sleazy motel, the kind that people rent a room to have sex, the moaning and screaming and other such sexual noises were constant, all night, every night. We literally woke up in the middle of the night to these intimate noises. We could hear everything, conversations on the staircase, etc. I suppose it can be kind of kinky, if you're into that. Don't come here if you plan on getting any sleep.

3. EVERYTHING ELSE
--Carrying heavy luggage up to the third floor and back down on the way out with no elevator (indescribable: an experience of its own)
--The TV: non-functional
--the phone: worked! but had to pay a lot for making local calls
(you can use a phone card with a toll-free number--it's free)
--the room: nasty, dirty, far from pleasant
--the bathroom: skeevy, but all things considered, doable. Also, wear waterproof boots because the floor is always flooded with water because there is no shower curtain
--noisy bathroom fan was a blessing: we used it to block out all the other noises
--attitude from front desk. Nasty, disrespectful, rude, disinterested, simply not nice.
--yes, they kept our passports
--overcharged us for phone calls, refused to give us proof/receipt

Location was ok. Semi-close to central attractions, but still had to use public transportation.
Overall, I warn you, this place if the worst ever.

About nightlife and cabs in Milan. Cabs are relatively scarce in popular/hip neighborhoods at night. It's very difficult to catch a cab in the middle of the night after you go out dancing. Beware. It's scary. Public telephones are scarce-to non-existant. Make sure you know numbers to call a cab and a cell phone would be great. We stood in line to get a cab for over an hour at 2 am. We were almost ready to walk to the hotel.

Thanks for reading. Hope you have better luck than we did.

We stayed at the Hotel Trieste for 2 nights in April 2006. The lobby looked reasonable and the receptionist spoke broken but understandable english. She immediately requested our passports, and like in previous reviews, she insisted that we go to our room while she held them. However, pre-paying for the room seemed to expedite the return of our passports.

There was no elevator, so we had to lug our bags up the narrow steps to our room on the second floor. Upstairs, the hotel smelled like stinky cheese, but our room was fairly clean. It was very basic, with tiled floors, modern but cheap furnishings, and a sink, bidet, and hair dryer. The bedlinens were clean and fresh towels were provided each day.

As for the bathroom, it was absolutely horrible. Firstly, there were only one functioning toilet and shower for 3 floors. The bathroom itself was shoddy and cramped, with nowhere to hang one's towel. There was no curtain around the shower, no hot water, and to make things even more enjoyable, the shower did not drain, forcing one to wade in a cesspool of stagnant water. The bathroom was filthy to boot, with stains in the toilet and hairs of the other guests littering the floors and shower. Disgraceful for a 2-star hotel.

The location of the hotel was okay. It was roughly a 12 minute walk from the Milan Centrale train station, and the Repubblica metro stop was about a 6 minute walk away, which was handy. Walking to the Duomo took about 25 minutes.

Overall, although we got an excellent price for the room, we would not stay here again and would not recommend the Hotel Trieste to anyone. Pay a little extra to stay somewhere else with better service and a clean bathroom with hot water.

This place is a little dodgy. Staff keep passports however will never declare doing this they just say i will register it later....then later again etc, till you leave!
They are unhelpful and seem to have an attitude of 'we can not be bothered'. I got this mainly by watching how they treated others.
Breakfast was ok but there is a great cafe which i beleive is a must and the only redeemable thing in Milan it is called the New Elite bar which is near the hotel on the main street from the train station.
They have great coffee and food and will assist with a smile.

My first problem with this hotel is no elevator, I have to carry my luggage upstair after my 18 hours flight. The room and the bath is a bit dusty, bathroom also always wet. The second prolem was no electric plug in the room so I have to give my cell phone to receptionist for batery charging. However the staff is quite helpfull and speak English. Location is good, close to central train station, and walking distance to the dome. I didn't have a chance to try tthe breakfast as I just stay one night and leave early morning. Milan is very expensive, but if you have more budget and would stay for longer and stay in cozy room, this not recommended.

This was one of those last minute trips, but couldn’t find a hotel and have to settle for something completely unreal which resulted in disgust and trauma. The receptionist was completely incompetent and rude. Aside from the lousy service, the room was decent size however it was infested with mosquitoes. The bathroom didn’t drain so each time you shower there is a pool of water in the bathroom. The bathroom fan was disturbingly noisy. You think they would make a switch for that. On the second day, I complaint to the manager, who shrugged off that mosquitoes in hotel rooms are NORMAL! This got me furious and I demanded for a new room. They gave me a larger room on the third floor, which I had to carry my luggage up the narrow, steep stairs (no elevator). Apparently, they were able to out smart the mosquitoes by plugging in a electronic bug repellent. However, the door couldn’t lock. There was absolutely no hot water. Finally, like my previous room I find myself in a pool of water in the shower. Once again I complaint to the receptionist which I found was completely waste of my time. Aside from his sarcastic and totally unprofessional manner, I found his shouting on the phone with his manager in crude Italian refreshingly inviting for a fight. I packaged my bags. Called American Express about this issue. Booked at another hotel down the street and I was happy for the rest of my trip.

OK, first the good points. It's (very) cheap, it's (mostly) clean and it's (fairly) central; the management staff are friendly and very helpful. That's about it really. But if that's all you're after, then read no farther, because the Hotel Trieste will suit you fine. However if you want something even a little bit homely, read on.

The hotel entrance is small and unwelcoming, and the stairs are mostly without hand rails. The halls aren't decorated in any way, nor was our room.

We visited in December, and it was absolutely freezing in the room. When the door was closed there was a gap of nearly 1cm through which you could clearly see outside into the hall (and presumably outside could see in if they felt so inclined), so despite the heating being on quite a bit, it was always cold. The tiled floor (no carpet anywhere) and the painted breezeblock walls didn't help in this regard either.

The 2 twin beds themselves were quite small, and the linen even smaller, which again meant any hope of warmth was gone.

There was only one central room light (no bedside lights) and most of the furniture was self assembly, of the dirt-cheap-rubbish variety, and was unsurprisingly broken in places.

The room itself, thanks mainly to the (dirty in places) painted brick walls, felt a bit like a prison cell. This wasn't helped by the one small window, which opened out onto a filthy apartment back and someones washing not 2 metres away. We kept it shuttered all the time.

The bathroom (shower and toilet) was OK, a bit small but quite functional and reasonably clean - although the long hair I found in the toliet holder certainly wasn't ours! Towels, etc, were changed each day and were clean.

For timing reasons, we didn't try the breakfast.

I can only imagine the 5 star reviewers here are easily pleased, or spent little time in the hotel. We paid 60 Euros per night for a twin room, but unless you really need to spend as little as possible, I would advise paying an extra 20-30 Euros per night for a much more pleasant stay elsewhere.
