Owner description: Why visit a cemetery when you’re on vacation, you ask? The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Europe has some fantastic cemeteries, and this one is no exception!

Massive monuments and intricate statues make the Monumental Cemetery in Milan a pretty cool place to be buried. Plus there’s a cemetery cat who snuck into a few of our photos!

My boyfriend and I spent about one and a half hours here. It's definitely a must-see if you're in the area. You'll be surprised just how many monuments are packed into the cemetery grounds.

Keep in mind: it's a cemetery, and it's Italy, so be respectful (no skimpy clothing, loud conversations, or screaming children).

Don't go expecting a traditional cemetery. The Cimitero Monumentale is more like an outside art gallery. The Famedio (main memorial chapel of the cemetery) has an amazingly beautiful ceiling.

The sculptures on the graves and the tombs are absolutely stunning. Sometimes, it is sad, for example when the lettering on the grave stone has fallen off and you don't know who is buried there...

There are information boards scattered throughout with the tombs/graves of well known Italian families marked. These help you navigate.

All in all, it is well worth a visit!

As cemeteries go this is extraordinary. It's remarkable and enormous, tranquil and strangely welcoming. Every grave has a life-size statue of a guardian angel, Roman God or of the deceased themselves, mourning at the grave-side. The grounds are decorated with a variety of mature trees, flowers and hedging. The huge architectural buildings house many tombs, sculptures and crypts. The giant sculpture of the last supper is
amazing. The quiet peacefulness of this place in the middle of a noisy and busy city is alluring, could have spent more time here, certainly worth a visit.

If you enjoy a stroll through a quiet art park, this is would be a good stop for you. If you enjoy unusual but beautiful historical cemeteries, The Monumental Cemetery is a must. The juxtaposition of ornate and simple, gaudy and tasteful, self-worship and religious is astounding. Around every corner is another mix of amazing ways to honor, remember, and revere Milan's previous citizens.

Loved the amazing statues, architecture and stained glass. We could have spent much more time here but the mosquitoes were driving me crazy.
