“Great location but that's probably it.”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

Having booked a three day stay at the Gray I ended up staying only one night. The hotel is in great location but sadly there is construction all around them which they do not mention anywhere online. If this issue was mentioned and the rate was half price then I could understand. However having been woken up at 7am to the tune of jack hammers and Italian builders whistling I was not impressed. In addition the AC system was still on Summer mode and you could not get heating in the room. I had frozen at night and all they had to offer me the night before was an extra blanket. When I said I wanted heating they said there is nothing they can do.

The above being said in the morning after this ordeal I was greeted by a very friendly Lorenzo at reception who went out of his way to help me. He offered me to move in the evening into their best suite and I asked him if there are going to be works the next day. He admitted the works can be heard everywhere and I declined his offer saying sleep was high on the priority list. He then went on to call their sister hotel to see if there is availability. When he found there was none he was happy to call around and fine me a room elsewhere. I eventually found a room online myself.

Nevertheless he was helpful in refunding the booking reducing the price of the bad night to half price and treated me very well. So I give them A+ for customer service, good English and helpfulness.

In terms of the room I think the sparkle of this hotel has faded and it is time they commence construction works themselves to update the rooms which are starting to feel worn out and dated. So a remake is certainly on the cards there.

Breakfast is below expectations and having been to many hotels in Milan the spread offered was rather limited.

The location is great and the hotel should really capitalize on that and become cutting edge again. Hopefully I will stay again once works are done and the comments above have been taken onboard

Room Tip: Front facing rooms are better then courtyard when there is no construction going on

We stayed at The Gray for our final two nights of our Italy trip in September. There were good and bad points. I will address both.

The Good:

The location is awesome. It is about a minute away from the Duomo and related Piazza. Likewise a minute to the Galleria. There was also a great department store basically next door (La Rinascente?). You could walk pretty much anywhere you wanted to go. We even walked to the Last Supper (but took a cab back).

We had booked one of the Galleria view rooms. The room itself was nice; very modern and udpated (see below from my complaints about it).

The hotel has a nice deck area off the second floor which was nice to hang out on during a break from all the walking.

The Not-So-Good:

As indicated, we booked a Galleria view room. I completely understand that the hotel does not control exterior factors but there was major renovation work going on that impacted us in two ways. First, we really did not have a view of the Galleria as the building across the street was covered in scaffolding which completely obstructed the view. Again, I understand the hotel does not control this, but not only were they more than happy to take s significantly higher rate for a view room even though there was no view but they did not even alert us to this limitation. Very irritating. Meanwhile, in the same building the hotel occupies, there was major renovation underway with jackhammering starting at 8 am. Again, not a word of warning.

Although the room was very updated it was not particularly user friendly. It looked really cool but was just kind of awkward. The bathroom counters were small with not much space to put things and you couldn’t see where the counter ended given the funky sink and mirror. Just small stuff really but mildly annoying. The bathroom and closet area was also dark which was a challenge at times. Again, form over function seemed to prevail.

We checked out breakfast one morning (not included in our rate) and it was definitely NOT worth the exorbitant rate. We left and walked into the Galleria where we happily ate.

The service was fine though a bit slow at times to get drinks in the bar and such. Again, nothing major but mildly irritating at times.

The location may well make up for all the issues but for the price. I would not bother with a Galleria view room (even without the scaffolds). At the price level, I did expect more.

A modern hotel, a half block from the Duomo, and one from Piazza La Scala. You can't get a more conveniently located hotel, but at a premium price. I understand pricing for the location, but is it necessary to charge 36.30 euro for a mediocre breakfast on top of a 350euro room? It should have been gratis. No complaints but the price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the front street. There's a very popular bar just across the street to the le...

Lovely hotel The Gray in Milan ! Small Boutique like hotel perfectly placed next to the Milan Duomo and its shopping gallery, in a quiet tiny street (we came by car and they took care of it, keeping it safely parked). Though so central, it isn't noisy in the rooms. Being an LSH hotel, the service is excellent, with a good bar and breakfast was fine too. The rooms are great - we especially liked one with lots and lots of Makassar ebony everywhere and in particular in the bathroom where the round bath was sooooo huge but deliciously so and you can watch tv in it too ! Just stayed for a quick weekend but thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a very small hotel in an amazing location in Milan.
I visited for fashion week and while the room was VERY small , the bathroom was nice and the whole place is quite clean. The problem is that the hotel is surrounded by construction sites -from all angles- the construction starts at 6am and the hotel doesn't care- there was literally a jackhammer outside my window at 7am and when i called to complain they said " oh, they aren't supposed to start until 9am - i guess they started early today".
besides that the service is pretty non existent.
If you want to be near the Duomo this is a choice, but not a good one.

Room Tip: facing the back is better.

We chose to stay here for a couple nights due to the proximity to shopping. The shopping turned out to be overpriced and overrated but The Gray was clean, modern, and comfortable. The staff was very helpful in suggesting a few places for food, drinks and nightlife. There is a Metro station and taxi stand just a few blocks from the front door, and Piazza del Duomo is literally just around the corner. I can't imagine a better location, more convenient location while in Milan. The rooms are very modern (think New York boutique hotel, but with larger rooms) and decor is tasteful and relaxing. Our only disappointment was the discovery of the hotel's great little rooftop bar that was never open.

This is a gem of a hotel in the heart of Milan. Located just blocks from the Duomo. We had a beautiful loft suite with in suite steam room, fantastic bath and shower, huge walk in closet in an ultra modern space. The breakfast and dinner restaurant has nice ambience, great food and beverage choices. Extremely friendly and competent staff throughout. Great restaurant recommendations a d concierge services. The only detractors is the lack of an in house gym ( small gym in sister hotel down the street) and difficult parking situation.
