“Perfect Hotel in a Perfect Location.”
Reviewed 29 May 2006

A flawless, stylish, edgy, & impeccably clean small hotel in an unbeatable location.
Take any New York "haute couture" hotel & multiply the style by 10! Loved this hotel! The Gray Hotel is a great alternative on the same small street.

We spent (my husband and I) the Easter weekend in Milan for shopping and found this design hotel over the net the very last day.
After reading all reviews, we did not know what to expect, but at the end it was only for two nights and our idea was not to spend too much time in the hotel room.
Upon our early arrival, the room was not ready and we left our suitcases and started our tour, but not before have the environment checked out and the first impression about entrance and lobby was "so COOL, all black and concrete".
Reception staff young and polite, next door a nice typical coffee bar, part of the hotel but opened to passers-by.
When we made later our way to the room, we found it as cozy as the rest of the hotel: modern and minimal, all black & white and concrete walls.
The bathroom, well hidden behind a wooden wall, was small but with everything we needed and so cooool.
The room is not huge, like all 4* hotels in milan but with the difference that they are tough and boring, whereas this one is fresh and easy.
From our window, the view at the end of the narrow street where the hotel is located, was compeltely occupied from the massive side of Duomo. Location could not be better: 3 steps from Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 100m away from Duomo underground station.
The breakfast served in a cosy room was extremely good, with a wide choice of everything and waiters so prompt in serving hot drinks as soon as new guests entered the room.
Needless to say, food was fresh and delicious, and again displayed as ready for a AD photo.
This hotel is indeed a design hotel!
Price is not low, but it is in the heart of Milan and next time we will choose it again.
Only recommendation: if you like traditional old style hotels, stay away!

the Hotel Straf is quite minimalistic which i tend to appreciate. The rooms bare concrete. Only wish that all of the lights would turn off!!! Never was offered any help with our luggage and believe me, we had enough of it. At check out the front desk was absolutely horrific. By far the WORST service i have ever had. Not only did he speak to us rudely, but he charged us for 50 euros a night of taxes which on our reservation said were included. Obviously not!!!. the front desk stated that he could not contact his manager and that they would call us to deal with this matter and that it could be totally refunded. never did get a call from them. then had to wait for 30 minutes while they called a taxi for us. ended up missing our train. could have mad it on time. what stopped us? maybe it was the awful bellman who told the taxi driver we had hailed down outside the hotel that we had already called one. Hmm. never did get my 100 euros back.

Very original and stylish hotel.
Except that after the arrival from me have demanded a credit card, that for me it is strange, all was remarkable. The personnel in a dining room was especially excellent. Probably, students.

Our room was adequate. It has a modern concrete design. Breakfast was OK, but don't take it too late because it gets really crowded. Location is central. Staff were casual and friendly.

This place really grew on me. First the location is fantastic literally steps from the Duomo and the metro and slap bang in the centre of Milan.

We received a very warm welcome and despite checking in at 11.30 am (thanks to Ryanair early flights) they made every effort to get our room ready as quickly as possible. All the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was a problem.

The concept is ultra minimal and I am far from a design juckie but it still struck me as warm and inviting. Reports of bare concrete walls and floors concerned me a little but where this is used they are actually textured and with great lighting they seem far from cold. It is really clever the whole thing and I loved the faded copper effect around the place.

The room was the large and bed fine. The lights were a little complicated and we never quite figured out the full extent of the possibilities. Bathroom was good size although would have preferred a glass shower enclosure rather than the bath with a shower fitted above and naff brown shower curtain which seemed too fussy in such an otherwise cool place. The room was a little noisy at times not from outside but from other guests but not a huge problem.

Breakfast was continental so cereal, coffee, fruit, toast, danish etc. There was cooked available at a small extra cost but we found what was on offer fine. Loved the coffee and also loved sitting on our black cube every morning. Strange but kind of cool.

Overall, made for a different experience and would recommend this hotel for location and friendly helpful staff alone. The design thing is a bonus.
