Dinner at Savini is truly a horrible experience. The Osso bucco was tasteless. The risotto served with this dish was thick and gluey. There is no other way to describe it. THICK GLUE. The appetizer was no better....we ordered the king prawns which were mushy when they were served. The prices charged by this restaurant are ridiculous. In two weeks of travelling around Italy and eating at Michelin starred restaurants a couple of times, this was the most expensive and WORST meal we ate. Stay away from this restaurant and avoid being disappointed.

This was outrageous, starting with the guy hawking for customers and including the price of 12 - 14 Euro ($20) for two scoops of ice cream and two cookies in a dish. Caprese salad arrived overly plain and simple for the price. Better tomatoes available this time of year in Italy. I had to ask for balsamico and salt and pepper. The 30 Euro ravioli arrived with frozen hard kernel of cheese in center. Sent back, they arrived second time barely lukewarm and back talk from the hawker. Butter had off taste of fridge. What a price for great people watching in this granddaddy restaurant listed in Michelin guide.

We visit Milan often. This visit our adult son joined us. He chose Savini. We have eaten here in the past. I would really rate the restaurant somewhere between average and very good. The food is fresh and well presented. We ordered a mixed salad which was very large and served with oil and balsamic vinegar, the way we like it. The bread tasted "day old". The Caprese ordered was good quality and ample in size. My son's plate was the real winner- spaghetti with a tomato basil sauce. Pasta was perfectly cooked and sauce delicious. The service is a confusing issue. You have 2 or 3 waiters, none who can make eye contact with you. Yet they are not quite unpleasant. They try to move you along get you to order, eat and leave. Smiles are not part of the service. You can almost feel some discontent in their efficiency. Also, it is expensive, but that is the way of Italy now. $$$. Water prices can be shocking.

Savini is perfectly situated in the "mall" opposite the Milan Cathedral. Service, food and prices are upscale -- you get to relax with great people watching as they walk by and watch you.
Worth doing once as a tourist

With all the economic problems in Italy and high business taxes many service businesses have had to cut corners, downscale or reduce quality to much lower levels to survive.
Savini isn't now at the highest level we remember it from years ago, but they have retained their values and ethos with regard to food.
Our service was good from the same well dressed and articulate waiter, despite my wife speaking fluent Italian he also spoke fluent English with me to ensure our order was correct.
The food arrived promptly and tasted good, we're used to dining out in a variety of restaurants across the quality/cost scale, so comparing Savini with other experiences we had no complaints there.
Naturally the prices in Italy have gone up dramatically, I was astonished at the cost of our meal and while we're not on a tight budget, clearly Italy is going to struggle with tourism if they keep up these huge costs. (most hard working Italians are deeply concerned by the political, tax and government expenditure situation).
Another problem in the area Savini is located is the sheer volume of begging. The police or local security need to ensure diners and shoppers aren't continually harassed for money by very aggressive begging and immigrants also selling trinkets/flowers popping up in your face every few yards. Savini should complain to the authorities to get them to act to protect businesses, not rely on their waiters to clear beggars and hawkers away!
