“Beautiful place in the Piemont”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

A very nice restored house in the little village of "Villa", in the hills above Isola d'Asti. Beautiful view. Dinner outside at sunset is very romantic.
We had a beautiful big room (Junior Suite) and enjoyed the friendly and warm atmosphere at this hotel. Great place to spend a few peaceful and relaxing days! Great breakfast, very good cooking (just one menu for dinner, but excellent quality).

Room Tip: Every room ist special!

A beautifully restored villa resting high above with a beautiful view. Friendly staff, food nice and I cannot say enough good things. I will certainly return. An area in the middle of the wine country with a lot of fantastic restaurants.

We rented the whole hotel for 28 friends plus young children for my 40th birthday party. We and our friends enjoyed every moment of it, including the friendly and casual yet top quality service, food and beverage. The place is gorgeous and Peter and his team real top people making all guests feeling italian hospitality at its best.

We stayed at the Castello di Villa for a week and we had a great time. The staff is warm, friendly and speaks Italian, German and English. We booked a junoir suite and had no regrets. The room (40 square meter) was lovely, good furnished and very spacious. It had a very large and well equiped bathroom. The view over the hills of Piemonte from the windows of the room is wonderful, you even could see the Alpes.
The buffet breakfast was of good quality. When the weather is good, you can enjoy breakfast at the terrace outside in the sun or in the shade.
The (internal) restaurant serves very good meals. The restaurant has no card, but every evening there is a different menu. Sometimes there is an anti pasti buffet, or another special diningevening. There is no obligation to eat in the restaurant, but it is very recommendable to eat there.
The hotel has a lovely Cantina, where you can choose the wine to drink at your meal, or at the terrace
The terrace by the pool is very attractive. You have a wonderful view over the Piemonte hills, you can have a drink and if you wish they serve a snack, like a platter of antipasti.
We did not want to go home after a wonderful week!

We arrived at this hotel travel-worn and hungry, to celebrate my in-law's 50th wedding anniversary. The staff greeted us with genuine warmth and efficiently helped us get settled, anticipating all our needs.

Our large room was exquisite, and cool in the hot summer. The hotel was full yet quiet at night. We slept deeply in our beautiful and comfortable four poster bed, beneath a vaulted and painted ceiling (decorated with women representing the four seasons).

The food was fresh, the wine list impressive, and the pool refreshing. The staff in this hotel were attentive and thoughtful, making our large party feel welcome and cared for as we celebrated this special family event.

  • Liked — our bedroom and the pool
  • Disliked — internet only in the lounge near the front desk

Altogether wonderful. The villa is tucked up on a hill in a small, immaculate village. The villa holds a very prominent presence in the town and looks out over rolling hills speckled with grape vines. I was treated as a friend right from the start. Everyone was very helpful and kind. Not overbearing but always available. The food was delicious and of the region. Indeed, the chef is himself a talented sweetheart and eager to share his passion for the region's food and wine. You get the lovely feeling that you have access to all that the region offers; in other words, whatever you are looking for they will help you find and offer their advice and advocacy along the way.

There was a lovely spirit palpable among the guests. Very mellow and serene as well as fun-loving. I heard at least three languages being spoken, none of which I speak; importantly, i was always able to communicate one way or another and never made to feel embarrassed for not speaking their language.

The room was spacious and clean. The bed very comfortable. I slept great. It was always easy to relax. There is a minimum of frills. Decor is tasteful and mercifully to the point. You never feel like you are paying for a bunch of unwanted schlock; at the same time you are never wanting for anything. A great balance. The pool/terrace is the place where I found myself most often. A happy balance between privacy and community.

Note to travellers the mobility problems - there is no elevator and stairs are largely unavoidable.

I very much look forward to returning. And have confidence that I will feel very welcome. A special place.

The Castello di Villa is actually in La Villa - a small town south of Asti - on a lovely hill with extraordinary views. The hotel is advertised clearly by signs so not too hard to find. With only 14 rooms it does not cater to the masses and Americans are not the targeted audience. The decor is very mixed - lots of modern (not so interesting) art and staid Swiss furnishings. There is no elevator and all rooms are up several flights of steps so be prepared to walk 4 flights to get to the breakfast/dinner area. The owner is Swiss as are most of the guests. Most of the rooms are large, airy with high ceilings and spacious baths or showers - but there is no air conditioning. (The owner was quick to point out that guests never asked for it - that he got a great breeze due to his position on the hill) However, we were there in April - and it was warm. I imagine it gets QUITE HOT in the heat of summer. There is a small pool (unheated - the guests don't expect it).The bed was comfortable - nice sheets - but the towels were disappointingly worn and thin - considering the 250 euros charged for the room. A word of caution: the owner is quite friendly and charming and offers glasses of prosecco and antipasti to his guests who are completely unaware that they will be charged for this service at the end of the stay. Although there is a menu for lunch and dinner - the wine list is not on display. Therefore in order to avoid surprises - be smart and ask what is included in your stay and what is not. We are accustomed to receiving a friendly welcome glass of Prosecco at other properties without being charged over 30 euros for the privilege. To be fair, the food was excellent - the five course meal was really special - but it would be nice to know what it cost before I ate it - as well as the bottle of wine I was encouraged to have with the meal. The food & beverage bill at the end of the stay for 2 glasses of prosecco, 2 salads and 2 dinners with a bottle of wine came to $360.00 Compared to other area restaurants, the cost was quite high - equivalent to a 2 or 3 star Michelin place - which it is surely not. Surprisingly there was a pamphlet in the lobby advertising a Wat Po Thai Massage - and reflexology. I was tired from all the stair climbing and the owner sang the praises of the masseuse so I tried her out. She was a lovely Italian girl who had been to Thailand - and she did massage my feet and lower legs adequately for about 50 minutes while I sat on a couch in my room. It was not the best way to spend $130 - and I would not recommend it as you can get a really incredible massage at the nearby Spa town of Acqui Terme. So - would I return to Castello di Villa - perhaps for the view and possibly a glass of wine or coffee. But for the price (over $700 a night with food & wine) I would vastly prefer to stay at La Villa Hotel - in nearby Mombarruzo - where the welcome was genuine and the towels Frette - for a far more reasonable price.

  • Liked — Beautiful views of a peaceful valley - interesting renovated castle with good restaurant
  • Disliked — Overcharging for food and beverage - no internet access - no air conditioning - no elevator
