I read about this reasonably-priced Agriturismo in the "Special Places to Stay" book. You must have a car to reach it, as it sits atop a mountain overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of the Piedmont area of Italy (a great place to stop on route from Switzerland to the Italian riviera). The wonderful hosts, Davide, Carla and thirteen-year-old son Alfredo could not be more gracious and accommodating! La Violina is a lovely seventeenth-century farmhouse with its own vineyard, gorgeous swimming pool, tennis courts and even a chapel, not to mention spectacular views in every direction. The owners have restored the buildings to their original splendor and have done so with impeccable taste. Our triple room with private bath was spacious and lovely, with every thought given to our comfort. Davide is a fabulous cook, and even serves his own wine with the dinner of several courses (we brought home a bottle). We loved playing pool with Alfredo after dinner in the beautiful game room -- you'll never meet a sweeter boy than Alfredo! But perhaps the best moment of our visit was walking out of the farmhouse in the morning to find a breakfast set up at a table under an umbrella, overlooking the breathtakingly beautiful valley below. We sat down to what already looked like a full breakfast, and then watched with amazement as the maid brought out tray after tray of cheeses, pastries, fruit, strong coffee, etc. This was easily the best breakfast of our four week trip.
If you go, be sure to stay several days, and ask for a tour of the place, including the wine cellar. We will plan our next trip around visiting this special place again. Thank you for some wonderful memories, Davide, Carla and Alfredo!
