“Wonderful lakeside location and gorgeous rooms”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

This was probably my favorite hotel, on a trip marked by great hotels. The location is right on Lago Orta so even if you don't have a lakefront room, which we didn't, you can enjoy the lake as you dine or have a drink on the great floating deck or covered patio. Lago Orta is much smaller than Como or Maggiore so there is a more intimate feel. The hotel is on the edge of tiny Orta San Giulio, so a quick and easy walk into the main square. In the midst of medieval charm, the hotel is very modern, to the point of austerity, but very stylish. Good service. Good breakfast. Nice pool area, right on the lake and lake swimming for the hardy. Re the water drinkability issue, that is out dated info. Water was fine -- some money was spent to upgrade plumbing and now not a problem. They certainly need to update their hotel directory to reflect this - selling bottled water isn't worth the bad press. But we Americans do get a little irked by the general European custom of charging for water in restaurants and whatever so perhaps overreact. But again, we were on a VBT trip, all drank or used the water to brush teeth, etc, and no one had a problem.

We held the reception here for my son's wedding.

The setting is idyllic, looking out onto the lake. The food was good and the only reason I am giving this 3 star, is sadly because of the service.

The table settings were not correct , the menu advertised veal instead of lamb, although lamb was served as requested. The waiters were unbelievably slow and had to be asked several times to bring butter and wine to the tables.

I also felt that since we had had the reception there and that the newly married couple were spending the night at the hotel, more could have been done my management to make their room special.

Sadly we only stayed one night, but the hotel was a real surprise. Hidden among the side roads of the lake, it was of ultra modern design. The room was spacious and had balcony which looked directly over the lake. The bar had an outside area which overlooked the lake. We had a very enjoyable evening meal and breakfast, and had to leave the next day regretfully.

We stayed at the San Rocco as part of our VBT Hiking the Italian Lakes Tour. When we read the hotel directory in our room, we were shocked to find this sentence, "It is not possible to drink the water supplied in the bathroom." When we went downstairs to the bar to get some drinkable water that we assumed would be supplied free, we were told that we had to BUY the water, so we paid 6 Euros for 1 liter of drinkable water. When we checked into the hotel, neither our guides nor the woman at reception mentioned the water situation. But the employee at the bar corroborated what was said in the hotel directory.Unthinkable! Moreover, the view from our room was of a dumpster (see photo). We won't ever stay at this hotel again!

Good afternoon from the management,
I'm very sorry that your holiday in our hotel was not confortable, but you need consider all our service of the hotel, that is a special location in front of the lake.
The water in the hotel is potable, but drink water from the bathroom of the room is not advised
( we are in front of the lake ), so for the well-being of our client do not recommend to drink the water but use only to wash yourself or wash teeth.
Our price of mini bar is a normaly prices of an hotel 4 stars superior.
About the view from your room is not a part of our hotel.
I hope to see you again in our hotel or in Orta, that is one of the best location in Piemonte.

This hotel had the best and worst elements of any hotel on our 12-day trip. It's an old convent building with convoluted stairways and halls. You go up, and then down, and then walk a long way to find the reception desk or the bar. The rooms are very modern with nice amenities BUT…our first room was overrun with ants that ran all over the bed, the floors and invaded our suitcases, forcing us to later empty them and wash them out before we could repack. Front desk seemed blasé about it (half of our group had already changed rooms for reasons of bugs or falling ceilings) but gave us a lake view room to move to. Much better…except steam was pouring out of the bathroom radiator and we couldn't turn it off. Couldn't figure out the phone, had to trek to the front desk again. An employee followed us back, saw the problem and asked the main office, which controlled the heat, to turn it off. We were given a free drink chit for our troubles, but I'm not sure the killer view is worth changing rooms and still having it be uninhabitable. Interestingly, the literature in the room says the water is not potable. We asked at the front desk and they knew nothing about this. We'd been drinking the tap water all week and assumed this was just a ploy to sell the bottled water in their mini-bar.

Room Tip: Thoroughly inspect your room when you arrive and immediately request a change if there's a probl...

Located in the picturesque village of Orta San Giulio, we enjoyed a delightful evening seafood meal. On our next visit we would book a room we could lounge on the garden terrace and look out over the lake. Enjoying a wonderful meal at sunset cannot be beat. Take your camera,

We stayed overnight en route from Liguria to Zurich towards the end of July and will go back.

The hotel is very comfortable with friendly staff and a great lakeside bar. We ate in the hotel which was ok but with hindsight should have walked into the centre of San Guglio which is only 300m or so down a delightful street which offers glimpses of the lake between buildings and a number of interesting shops. At the end you emerge into the town square which is beautiful - bars and restaurants on three sides and the lake on the fourth, where you can pick up boat trips.

I am now 63 and a happy bunny - real Italian expresso coffee was everywhere!

We will go back for a long weekend via Milano and will explore some more, mainly on foot.
