the hotel itself appears dated; but is made by the welcome from the host; the terrace restaurant with the lake view; the wine cellar from which you choose your very reasonable decent quality wines and the decent cooking from the chef including a great rissotto; pleasant fillets of lake fish; and good pasta. beds were comfortable; showers hot and forceful; beach just outside the hotel pleasant; orta 3km down the road - so for drinkers the hotel restaurant the only sensible option for a (very good) dinner. wide food choice at breakfast - coffee strong and plentiful. oh, try the salami either at dinner, at breakfast, or both.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the view from the hotel is spectacular.

After traveling through Piedmont for the last 3 weeks and staying at everything from B&B's to little hotels to chain hotels, this was the shabbiest we stayed at (we were in several other 3-star places, all of which were better kept). Dark hallways, cheaper furniture and somewhat run-down atmosphere. The only things nearby are the beach across the street (they normally charge for entry, but hotel guests get in free but still have to pay for chairs, umbrellas, etc. Music is played over loudspeakers, so not very relaxing.), a divey pizzeria and a camping park. So food and entertainment options within walking distance are VERY limited. It's at least an hour walk into Orta San Giulio, so if you don't have a car--forget it.

The owner is welcoming but very hard to find. We had to hang around reception for 20-30min before he showed up on several occasions.

The hotel restaurant was decent. Simple food in enormous portions. Breakfast was the same: simple and decent. Doublecheck the self-serve eggs though: we watched one man assume they were boiled and wind up with raw egg in his lap.

If you're on a budget and have a car, this place is fine. Otherwise, I'd recommend finding a way to pay a little more to stay in town where there's more to do.

Charming hotel ! Warm and friendly welcoming and a:great restaurant thanks to Otello and David. Nice and quiet location overlooking the lake with a beach to spend the day sun bathing and swimming. If you prefer exploring the area, Orta San Giulio is a couple of miles away with beautiful testimonies of italian art and history:

I stayed in this hotel on the shores of Lago de Orta, 4 km south of Orta San Giulio for two nights. It is an excellent value, with large rooms overlooking the lake, a restaurant with honestly good, if plain piedmontese cuisine, and an excellent breakfast, a great playroom. Nearly perfect for families with young kids. The two brothers who run this hotel are its best attraction, they have very winning personalities and work very hard to please their guests. If they are not genuinely nice, then they are the best actors in Italy. They charmed our ten-year old daughter, and she is not an easy customer with strangers. I am used to extremely overpriced lodgings in Italy (as compared to France, Austria, and Germany), and this was absolutely one of the best deals I have had. When you factor in the the fact that the place offer free access to a beach, and reasonable three and four bed rooms, it is not a difficult choice for families outside the 1%
On the more critical side : 1) the beach which the hotel shares with a campground is a typical european holiday-camp style beach, which means that on weekends, it will be crowded. If it makes any difference, most of the people there were locals, and for this American it is interesting to be close enough to the natives to to a little amateur anthropology/sociology. Very polite, actually, considering how crowded no boom-boxes, screaming, or rowdyness). Wealthier milanese and Germans have more exclusive watering holes, of which there are definitely a few on Lago Orta : the Michelin guide shows that two restaurants in OSG have stars.

2) Between the lakeshore and the hotel is the main road out of the Lake, and on Friday and Saturday nights the traffic is very noisy in the rooms until after mid-night. Sunday night however, was no problem.

Room Tip: On the weekends, try to get a room on the south wing, to lessen the road noise a bit.

The Hotel is run by two brothers, Otello and Davido. We could not have been better looked-after. The location is fine, (we had a hire-car) with EASY links and parking for the village by the lake, Luglio, boat trips to the village on the Lake, - check out the path of silence around the nunnery there - PLUS an A-MAZ-ING drive HIGH up into Mottarone, off-ski-season, (May) for INCREDIBLE views over seven lakes, and down through a conservation area, where we stopped for a picnic lunch. perched on sawn-down tree trunks. Silence. Bird song. Food at the Hotel is FINE, with Otello serving up GREAT fish and Ganberoni about a foot long with panache and good humour. Tell them Phil sent you.

Fontaine Bleue was one of the happiest discoveries of a recent trip. Spacious rooms, lovely location, excellent value and Otello, the innkeeper, is one of the nicest folks we met. I had never been in this part of Italy before. GO and enjoy it before others find it!!!

The hotel is not located right at the centre of Orta, but a few kilometres South, right on the shore, but separated by the main road. This creates a noise problem in day time, especially during the weekends when Italian motor bikers come out in droves. At night, though, it is perfectly peaceful and quiet.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The view of the lake is lovely, but do not look left, because there is a dilapidated "hangar" type of structure housing a dancing hall or something.
the restaurant is very attractive and has a good choice of Italian cuisine.
The main asset without doubt is the manager Otello, whose charm will warm the coldest traveller in no time. He makes one really feel welcome.
