“Hotel 'Give me Grief'”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

On our 21 day Italian and Austrian vacation, we had the opportunity to stay at some fabulous hotels. This had the opportunity to be in that category, but it missed the mark. On a positive note, the location was super. Bolzano is a charming town combining the best of Austria and Italy, in foods, wines, scenic charm and some really great shopping too. We had been to Bolzano before to see the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology which houses Otzi, the 5,000 year old man. This was a great stop for the kids. If you go, make sure to eat at Zur Kaiserkron, one of the best meals we had on the whole trip, which the hotel did recommend when we were unable to get in to eat at Hotel Laurin. Finding a very nice hotel with adjoining rooms was our first priority and Hotel Greif's website did a nice job showing each room's decor and configuration. I selected, emailed and received confirmation directly from the hotel regarding two specific room numbers. Upon arrival, we were given different room keys for rooms that were NOT connecting. I pulled out my email and showed them where/when it was confirmed. They admitted that they had just given away one of our rooms and they had just two other connecting rooms available, and were happy to point out that they were cheaper since they weren't the junior suite I had booked (no discount). I was not happy at all, but I am not unreasonable, especially since we were tired from a very long day of travel and it was only for one night. After settling in our spacious and modern rooms, I was fine with the mix up, until I looked closer at the artwork all over our walls. It was not art. They were pornographic cartoon drawings that the artist called 'erotic art'. If it had only been the two of us, I would have ignored it, however, we had curious 9 year old twins that look at everything and we were not able to enjoy using the larger room for sitting with our family since I didn't choose to expose them to the 'art'. (FYI--avoid room 202 if you have children). I complained and they did send up some nice fruit and prosecco, but said there were no more adjoining rooms. The evening got worse as the room got hotter and we could not control the temperature. There was only one person working in the hotel for the night and he spent hours trying to get us a fan to blow some air around. Apparently, they have not figured out a way to turn the heat off for the entire hotel in the summer time. Forget getting on the wi-fi. It's free, IF you can finally get on. The one guy at the desk didn't know how to help. Figuring out the parking below the hotel was a challenge. Make sure you bring your parking ticket with you to check out so they may validate/or give you another ticket to get out of the garage. Ours didn't work, and I had to walk quite a way back to the hotel to get another. We walked down to the sister property, Hotel Laurin, which was very different and beautiful. I wish we would have tried booking there first. I will go back to Bolzano, but would stay elsewhere. The low rating was for how they handled the reservation, the inappropriate art for children, not being able to control the temperature and the arrogant attitude of some of the the staff.

We stayed in room 209 which was huge and of an outstanding design - modern style mixed with antiques! With a 1a view over the Bozen's Marktplatz (main piazza)! The bath is also very spacious and equipped with Bulgari toiletries! The breakfast offers a lot of fresh fruits and regional fresh products. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It was a real luxurious hotel experience which we enjoyed to the fullest!

Room Tip: 209 ! great!

This wonderfully located hotel is a great combination of modern shick with a European flavor. All the details and amenities are carefully taken care of and the rooms are nicely finished. I stayed at the Grief for the first time ten years ago and it is still in great shape. Cant go wrong here...

Bolzano in Spring is picturesque and the Hotel Greif added to our feelings of delight and surprise. All the staff were friendly and helpful, including those in the breakfast room. Our room was a comfort room and at 40 sq m it certainly provided us with room to spread out our luggage and feel at home. All rooms are individually decorated by artists and our was a little weird with stuffed and plastic cows on the walls, hand drawn pictures on the walls and ceilings and lots more. With a little craning we could see Piaza Walter from our windows as the hotel is set back from the Piaza. Parking was great, but beware that between the garage and the elevators to the rooms there are three sets of steps and unless you get a room ending in 1, e.g. 301, you get further steps.

The hotel cannot be better located. It is right in the middle of the town. The service is very good and the staff friendly. The hotel room was clean and comfortable. We had a great stay. The breakfast is simple but full and mixes the international standards and local products. All juices and fruits were fresh and in quantity. Enjoy!

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in early May 2013. We only wish we could have stayed longer in such a beautiful town and hotel. The hotel is right in the city centre on the main piazza. All rooms are shown individually on the hotel's website. When you make the booking, you can specify exactly which room you would like.
The sensational customer service started right from booking the room via email until the moment we left. For example, they realised it was my husband's birthday during the stay, so they left a birthday cake & card along with fruit in our room - a very nice touch!! Everything that was recommended by the reception staff (from restaurants to tourist sights) was spot on.
Our room and bathroom were very large and we even had a balcony to enjoy mountain views. The room was at the back of the property and was so quiet we only ever heard other guests whilst at breakfast or in the lobby. The room also came with free wi-fi, a safe & fridge.
If you need to park a car, do not attempt to park outside the hotel to unload your luggage. It is in a pedestrian only area. Instead go straight to the P3 carpark and there is a door straight into the lobby - just look for the signs and it's easy. The reception will then arrange a pass for you to come & go as often as you need.
Thank you Hotel Greif!

Room Tip: Room 210 has mountain views from the large windows and balcony. It is very quiet and incredibly lar...

Interesting old building, completely modernized. Our suite was large and comfortable. The staff were pleased to serve. Everyone tried their best to speak english to us, despite my effort to use my German.

Great breakfast. And the dinner at the sister hotel was excellent.

We were there for a conference and if we go back we will definitely stay there again.

If you drive there it is pretty confusing. The GPS got us close. We didn't know to park in the city garage which has spaces set aside for the Hotel Greif.
