On our 21 day Italian and Austrian vacation, we had the opportunity to stay at some fabulous hotels. This had the opportunity to be in that category, but it missed the mark. On a positive note, the location was super. Bolzano is a charming town combining the best of Austria and Italy, in foods, wines, scenic charm and some really great shopping too. We had been to Bolzano before to see the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology which houses Otzi, the 5,000 year old man. This was a great stop for the kids. If you go, make sure to eat at Zur Kaiserkron, one of the best meals we had on the whole trip, which the hotel did recommend when we were unable to get in to eat at Hotel Laurin. Finding a very nice hotel with adjoining rooms was our first priority and Hotel Greif's website did a nice job showing each room's decor and configuration. I selected, emailed and received confirmation directly from the hotel regarding two specific room numbers. Upon arrival, we were given different room keys for rooms that were NOT connecting. I pulled out my email and showed them where/when it was confirmed. They admitted that they had just given away one of our rooms and they had just two other connecting rooms available, and were happy to point out that they were cheaper since they weren't the junior suite I had booked (no discount). I was not happy at all, but I am not unreasonable, especially since we were tired from a very long day of travel and it was only for one night. After settling in our spacious and modern rooms, I was fine with the mix up, until I looked closer at the artwork all over our walls. It was not art. They were pornographic cartoon drawings that the artist called 'erotic art'. If it had only been the two of us, I would have ignored it, however, we had curious 9 year old twins that look at everything and we were not able to enjoy using the larger room for sitting with our family since I didn't choose to expose them to the 'art'. (FYI--avoid room 202 if you have children). I complained and they did send up some nice fruit and prosecco, but said there were no more adjoining rooms. The evening got worse as the room got hotter and we could not control the temperature. There was only one person working in the hotel for the night and he spent hours trying to get us a fan to blow some air around. Apparently, they have not figured out a way to turn the heat off for the entire hotel in the summer time. Forget getting on the wi-fi. It's free, IF you can finally get on. The one guy at the desk didn't know how to help. Figuring out the parking below the hotel was a challenge. Make sure you bring your parking ticket with you to check out so they may validate/or give you another ticket to get out of the garage. Ours didn't work, and I had to walk quite a way back to the hotel to get another. We walked down to the sister property, Hotel Laurin, which was very different and beautiful. I wish we would have tried booking there first. I will go back to Bolzano, but would stay elsewhere. The low rating was for how they handled the reservation, the inappropriate art for children, not being able to control the temperature and the arrogant attitude of some of the the staff.
