“Heavenly”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

We drove by, lost, and saw the vacancy sign for this pension. Miracle! It is truly amazing. The room was huge, well decorated, extremely comfortable. The picture does not do it justice because we had messed it up by the time we took it! Hotel Plunger is family owned and the staff are helpful, warm people who speak perfect English. The food was also fantastic. We loved the spa facility and appreciated that it was not crowded. Overall this felt like a luxury hotel located off the beaten path perfect for those who want to get away from it all. We were there in October and the nearby farm smell was in the wind. Natural fertilizer has an odor, so if you cannot ignore that, do not go here unless it is snowing. We loved it and walked and walked. The nearby villages are lovely, but this is not a place to go for shopping or night life. It is pure relaxation and we dream of going back.

Yay, first english speaking review!

I stayed here on a week long spring trip to north Italy. While the temperature was high when arriving at Castelrotto centre (around 30°C), this did not pose a problem, as temperatures dropped somewhat, and evening/night time was quite cool. The hotel itself is in a very quiet but somewhat uncentral location - yet it is perfect if this is what you seek. It has amazing views over the valley, the mountains on the other side, as well as the Sciliar/Schlern massif, which towers some 1200 m above the hotel. The only neighbours in the area are a couple of farms, and the only 'noise' you will hear are either crickets chirping happily, sheep, or the occasional cow of a rooster.

The staff mostly consists of the family running the hotel, and some extras - and they are wonderful and hospitable hosts! English poses no problem either, so they are (at least) trilingual.

Rooms are of a very high standard - I stayed in a Schlern room, which was 40 sqm - very roomy, with a separate sitting area, big balcony facing the valley, and a huge bathroom with a - hooay - walk-in-shower instead of a bathtub! The only gripe must be the very small TV set - although I normally don't watch much when I am travelling, but this was an exception with both the French open tennis tournament as well as the Giro d'Italia at the same time.

The hotel provides B&B as well as half pension - breakfast is a very good selection, and dinner is a set menu for every evening - not unnormal for where I come from either. We chose to dine at the hotel every night in order to save the hassle of driving or walking to Castelrotto - and at 10 EUR per person per night it is a steal! Plus the local wine from Kaltern/Caldara (just south of Bolzano) was very good :)

Now for the sightseeing/experience possibilities - there is a lot to choose from! Having only 3 days at our disposal, a careful selection had to be made, but if the weather is good, you really can't afford to miss out on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiseralm area. Drive down to the valley station in Siusi/Seis (free parking), take the gondola up to Compaccio/Compatsch, and pick and choose from a wide range of walking possibilities. There are a couple of bus services here too, so it is possible to walk one way and then take the bus back.
Another option is driving across a streak of mountain passes, possibly all the way to Cortina d'Ampezzo (Misurina/Tre Cime) or do a roundtrip with five passes (recommended route: Castelrotto - Val Gardena - Passo Gardena - Passo Valparolo - Passo Falzarego - Passo Pordoi - Passo Sella), and don't miss out on a walk to the 'city of stones' in front of the amazing Sassolungo/Lankofel massif.
Other possibilities include a walk to a couple of castle ruins, the Laghetto di Fié, or dropping by either Bressanone or Bolzano for a visit of the old town parts. Bolzano houses the famous mummy Ötzi by the way (not DJ).

All in all, this place is simply wonderful! On a possible return to the Dolomites - I know where to stay! And at 53 EUR per person per night for half board with a 40 square metre room - you cannot go wrong.
