Description: THE FINE ART OF TRUE PLEASURE "Nourish the body well so that the soul will want to reside there" is a saying apocryphally attributed to Winston Churchill. He would have truly loved it here, as we cook nourishing and refined gourmet cuisine in the finest sense of the word. A defiant fusion of hearty Alpine fair and Mediterranean opulence. In our gourmet restaurant, we love to amaze and astonish our guests. No matter how many times we step out onto our glass loggia and look out over the parapet of the panorama terrace at the stunning, cinematic views of Merano, we always find something new to marvel at in the ravishingly beautiful natural surroundings. There couldn't be a more ideal setting for the exquisite dishes prepared by our head chef Christoph Terschan. A culinary virtuoso, Christoph fuses the many facets of regional cuisine with the memorable delicacies he has encountered in far-away lands in the course of his career. These reinterpretations make for immensely rich and creative food. Whether it's an agreeable lunch you partake of, or a sumptuous gourmet dinner, you will invariably have a sense of savoring life to the full. The sublime cuisine is of course rounded off by impeccable yet affectionate service and the excellent advice of our sommelier when choosing from the fine wines in our cellar.

We stayed for 4 days in the beautiful hotel and could not have had a better experience. The setting is exquisite, truly peaceful and healing. We were greeted heartily by Gunther who saw that all our needs were met. Every staff member was warm and welcoming and we had NO problems with language, even though we are English speakers. Anna was particularly charming, and our excursion with Tomas into the mountains remains a vivid and exhilarating memory.

Dinners were works of art, with time between courses to enjoy the meal to the fullest. Be sure to get full board so as to take best advantage of the meals offered by Michelin rated chef Alexander Ortner. Spa services were also fantastic and relaxing. Poor could have been a bit warmer, but it is the end of the season.

Do not miss this hidden gem. We cannot wait to return. A heartfelt thanks to the Ortner family for this wonderful experience.

It was a beautiful day when I and my wife went for lunch in the restaurant of Castel Fragsburg Hotel, so we were able to confirm that the view from there is really stunning. However, the food was just nice and the service less than that. In fact, despite the view, the staff was everything but friendly and the time between the courses was terribly long.
I admit that is not easy for Herr Alois Haller and his team to prepare and serve a meal for people as me and my wife, who don’t speak German, even if, as anybody else, we are paying good money for getting the job done in a professional way.
So, as we were the only clients in the whole restaurant that didn’t speak German, someone decided that we should be punished for our ignorance. And the punishment came near the end of our lunch. Without any explanation, my pre-dessert, called “refreshment” in the menu, consisting of "variation of fruits and teas in form of ice crystals", was changed for a little grapefruit sorbet drawn in a sparkling white wine. And the discriminating behaviour continued by depriving me and my wife of the mignardises that were served with the coffee to the other clients, needless to say, all of them German speakers, who also got some souvenir gifts presumably from the chef. If this is not language discrimination, how might I call this disgusting attitude?
If you care more about very good food and friendly service and less about postcard views, you should try the Sissi in Merano or, 50 km further north, the Kleine Flamme in Vipiteno/Sterzing.

We happened to book to Castelfragsburg by chance and it was like a fairy tale experience. Awesome panoramic view (ask for the dehor), nice service and fabulous food. Small but surprislingy tasteful portions, creative solutions and never ending "welcome and goodbye bites" from the chef. Not cheap, but you pay to live the fairy tale!

It is my first time traveling around this part of Italy, the more unknown mountainous North. Plenty of top-notch restaurants in this area, nice mixture between German neatness and mediterranean lightness of living and friendliness. The restaurant is somewhat off the track, about 5 miles from Merano city. The view outside on the patio is incredible, though, and definitely worth the detour. The place itself is probably more suitable for couples, not as much for families (formal environment, there were no kids around). Light, mediterranean influenced food made out of local, organic products. Everything harmonious and very good. Courteous, English-speaking wait staff. Note: If you are vinophile like us, call for the sommelier: incredible personality, walking encyclopedia (try the wine pairing).

In this part of italy, it is customary for the chef to send a welcome-gift to your table before the meal starts. It's a small appetiser, something novel and tempting, usually a specialty of the house.

At the Castel Fragsburg, we recieved a welcome champagne form the sommelier, and welcome dishes from the waiting staff, the chef, the baker, the sous chef, and the patissier. That gives you some idea of the attention to detail which the management lavishes on its guests. Every course astonishes you; every mouthful is a novelty.

I have lived in Japan for some time, and my partner is Japanese. We both agree that the Castel Fragsburg has created the kaiseki of Italian cuisine.

And during the summer, to enjoy all this with a glorious view, makes an extraordinary experience.

Sure, it's expensive. But worth every last Euro-cent!
