The Tourism is located in a castle often visited by Kaiserin Elizabeth (Sissi) back in the day; today it is surrounded by Merano's botanical garden. My family learned a lot about Merano's history as well as that of South Tyrol in general. There were paintings and movie clips and voice recordings and little doors to be opened - all kinds of ways visitors could really engage with the information. After walking through the Touriseum, a stroll through the botanical gardens with a break at cafe summed up a great day!

Fascinating history of the birth of tourism in Merano. Ticket included in the entry for the Trauttmansdorff gardens. Allow an hour or so. Info boards are in English. Well worth it.

An informative and light hearted museum as part of the T Gardens. It's worth a visit and gives a real insight into how tourism has evolved in the region.

I really enjoyed the Tourism Museum in Merano, firstly for the amazing garden setting of Castel Trauttmansdorff and also the scenic and not to long bike ride to get there from the centre of town. I wanted to go just to see some original Baedeker guides as well as to get a sense of historic tourism from north Europe to Italy crossing the Alps. Tourism in Italy really did start here.

The Touriseum is part of the Trautmannsdorf Castle gardens complex - one ticket gets you admission to both. We started here, and loved it. Parts are a bit quirky, others quite serious, but overall an interesting hour or so spent.
Do check out the 'Tourism Pin-ball machine' where you get to guide your pin-ball on a journey through the South Tyrol!
