“Large clean room and friendly service close to the cable car at a fair price”
Reviewed 11 January 2010

Cervinia is one of the most expensive Italian skiresorts so we were happy to find this clean and roomy hotel so close to the main cable cars, at a reasonable price. It's a three-minute uphill walk to the lifts. Our twin room was simple but large by Italian standards, clean and in perfect condition w a large bathroom w shower. Bring own shampoo. Tiled stone floor also in the bedroom, with small rugs - not very cozy, but functional. Beds simple but OK. No elevator, but there is a lift for wheelchairs. Friendly and helpful management. No safe in room. TV. No internet available for guests. Most rooms have views over the village, not very busy local road and surrounding mountains. Rooms were warm in the night even with 15 degrees C below zero outside. Warm water in shower took 20-30 secs to arrive but then it was fine.

Locked skiroom with axcess from the outside, with hot air ski boot-warmers but no other heating - a bit cold. Manager said he some day would fix better heating in the ski room. We carried our ski boots to our room to have them warm in the morning. Manager's son has a small ski&boot rental shop just across the street, friendly service there too, a bit pricey but probably the same everywhere in Cortina...

The hotel's own restaurant seemed to be closed at the time for our visit. Five minute walk with some outdoor stairs (or sloping road) to reach the centre of town. Small center with supermarket & bank etc across the street & some staircases down.
Breakfast could have been more varied but OK, fresh bread with ham and choice of jam, yoghurt, fruit drink, self-service coffee/chocolate/cappuccino-machine.

All in all probably one of the best of the few budget choices in pricey Cervinia, well worth at least it's two official stars.

We paid for a twin room, and were initially placed in a twin room, but the manager moved us into a double almost immediately with no apology - not what we paid for, and the bed was small - I slept badly all week. The room was clean, but that's the very least you expect from a hotel whatever its standard. The food was generally poor quality (we're talking tinned spaghetti hoops here...), and service *very* slow - 2-3 hour sittings. Towards the end we gave up and ate in the local restaurants. Some guests got better service and food though - maybe the hotel is better if you're not on a package deal? The skiing in Cervinia was great, but the hotel made it the worst skiing holiday I've had -- the Al Piolet may be budget accommodation, but I've stayed in much better budget accommodation in Austrian and French resorts. Perhaps we might have been treated better had we complained? Regarding location, the hotel is one of the nearest to the lifts, but it's a steep uphill walk along a narrow road, with cars and minibuses often passing you by (and many of the drivers weren't considerate - we found it quite stressful). There was a path we could take for some of the distance, but this was often dangerously slippery. After this experience, we haven't returned to an Italian ski resort, and don't intend to in future.

We stayed here for a skiing trip with a large group of friends, some of whom were short on cash so we chose this hotel based on price (low) and location (good). The hotel is very well located, 2-3 minutes walk from the gondola that leads up to most of the pistes, and 2-3 minutes walk into town. The rooms varied a lot in charm or size, but overall were very nice, clean, good bathrooms, beds could have been a tad more comfortable as they are a little but short and would benefit from having duvets rather than blankets. I feel the cold and think that the heating could have been on more during the day as it did feel cold at times, not too bad though. The shower was always nice and hot and the bathroom was very clean and very large. We had half board and the food was better than I had expected, a nice (large) plate of pasta to start, then something like roast chicken and roast potatoes, then pudding. The second course could have benefited from sauce and more than one choice of veg but being as cheap as it was that is to be expected. We had several bottles of wine every night with the meal, plus lots of drinks in the bar and were pleasantly suprised by our final bill. The staff at this hotel are delightful, smiling and pleasant, we were impressed. The only thing I was not impressed with was the check out process, check out is at 10am which is rather early really, and they are literally standing outside your door with a mop at 10am, its a bit 'Yes thanks goodbye' which is unecessary I think. If I was on a budget, I would stay here again definitely, but I would probably spend a but more if I was able and stay somewhere a bit more luxurious. But I would definitely book this hotel again if money is tight.

Stayed at Al Piolet Feb 2007 - If your looking for a good budget ski hotel, close to the slopes and all amenities you will not be disapointed. The hotel has been recently renovated to a high standard. If you need 4* luxury go elsewhere, however if you want a good, friendly ski holiday give it a try.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Al Piolet (through Inghams Ski) for 6 nights at the beginning of 2006.
The hotel is superbly located 3 minutes walk from the main cable car station in Cervinia. The boot store is convenient and remains locked when not in use (although the key is hanging unattended not far away). The rooms are clean but basic, the bathrooms have lovely hot showers and the rooms are generally comfortable, although they can get a little cold during the day as the heating is turned off. The food is simple: pasta, eggs, and very few vegetables. As a vegetarian, my girlfriend sometimes found it difficult to find something on the menu, although the kitchen was prepared to make a simple pasta and tomato sauce if all else failed (we were impressed with some of the deserts though - look out for egg custard tart!!) The manager is friendly, and the waitresses/chambermaids are fantastic and very helpful.
All in all, the hotel is great for those on a budget, and we would recommend it.
Re: Cervinia, look out for the fantastic tea room in the village - its got delicious pastries aplenty, great drinks, comfy armchairs and sofas, and roaring fires!

Stayed at Al Piolet in Feb 05. We were staying there with a group of 20, which is always pressure for a small hotel.

The owner / manager Marco was very friendly and made our stay there more comic than it might have otherwise been.

The rooms were fine, although extremely thin walls meant that drunkenly arriving home at 3am did not please the other guests.

We were treated to a kareoke night with a local celebrity one night which was hilarious.

The food was poor, we often ended up having no vegetables, and the menu system is beyond belief. But the breakfasts were good with plentiful croissants, ham and cheese, jam, coffee etc.

Al Piolet's location close to the main gondola station up to the Plateau Rosa meant that we were often up the mountain with the first lift in the morning, and you can ski straight down into the boot room at the end of the day.
