“Cristallo disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2009

Just got back from a week at the Cristallo. Weather and skiing conditions were excellent but very disappointed in the hotel. Bathroom facilities were awful with a bath that was so small as to make it useless and a shower hose from the wall that sprouted water everywhere. One minute scalding hot and the next sub zero. Everywhere you look needed some small attention be it a lick of paint or more major. The staff tried their best but they were all young and some quite nervous. Won't be trying Mark Warner again

We were at the Hotel Cristallo for a week's ski-ing in January. The snow was the best they'd had for 50 years apparently but the hotel was a disappointment. The room we had on the first floor was right above the bar and noisy until the small hours most nights (It was even marked as such on the fire escape plan on the inside of the bedroom door!!). The fire door at the end of the corridor right outside our room, slammed hard every time someone went through it because the closer was defective. The bathroom was uselessly small with a shower over the bath which was equipped with a flimsy nylon curtain that clung to you all the time you were in there - yuk - these things should be banned!
The food was poor. It was British style which was disappointing in itself - part of going abroad is the joy of experimenting with the local cuisine, but there was none in evidence here. The main problem we had was that most of the food was poorly cooked - dry and tasteless swordfish which was returned to the kitchen twice for being almost cold and then discovered to be inedible because of overcooking. Duck in cherry and chocolate sauce which was, A) overpoweringly chocolatey, B) cut like doorsteps and C) dry and tough. The photographs of this hotel in the Mark Warner brochure showed food of a standard we did not see! Staff were very good if very young - they were very attentive and pleasant but overall our experience was spoiled by the food, the tiny cramped bathroom and a general air of a dated place that had seen better days.

  • Liked — The view from the balcony
  • Disliked — The food and the down at heel feel of the place

Just returned from another week's holiday at the Cristallo (last visited around 5 years ago). We received excellent service from many members of the staff who went that extra mile. Some of the staff were still very young and a bit unsure of themselves, but nevertheless they were friendly and courteous. The food was excellent, although mostly catering for British guests. The cakes at afternoon tea were particularly scrummy as were the desserts. Highly recommended if you are looking for the club hotel atmosphere. One of my fellow guests visited a 4* hotel in the town for a massage. She said it was very smart, but she would far rather be in the 3* Cristallo because of the friendliness of the staff - a high recommendation indeed.

  • Liked — It is located on the edge of the old town of Courmayeur and a few minutes walk to the cable car
  • Disliked — No negatives

We had a fantastic skiing holiday in courmayeur, staying at the Cristallo which is ideally located in the middle of the town. All the staff at the hotel were extremely helpful, going out of their way to meet any request. The food was outstanding, from the cooked breakfast, to the home made cakes with afternoon tea, to dinner where the free house wine is more than palatable. The hosted skiing and the table layout in the restaurant makes the hotel a really friendly laid back place to stay. There is a great bar for apre ski nearby called Bar Roma and at night hardly any noise. You dont even have to carry your bags from the bus drop off, the staff do it for you! All in all a wonderful little hotel which i would definately recommend

If you are staying with Mark Warner at the Cristallo, be warned that it is staffed entirely by young English seasonal workers. Although it is quite a sweet hotel decor-wise, it is let down by the fact that it felt very un-Italian. The food is of a good standard, but we did not expect Irish Stew to be on the menu! Part of the joy of an Italian holiday is the food... if you are happy feeling as though you are in a hotel in Bournemouth (with only English guests) then this is your place! The staff, although pleasant, were not very helpful when it came to information; they didn't even appear to have been briefed properly about the hotel itself. I guess it is not entirely surprising as they must have different staff every season. All in all, a disappointing experience when you are in such a lovely resort. I suggest if you stay here, you make it b&b only, and eat out at some of the delightful local restaurants instead. Also, be warned of the noise... floors 1 and 2 suffer from noise from the bar, although, even when we moved rooms, there appeared to be quite a bit of noise from the street every night with people coming out of bars and shouting until the small hours!

Hi All

Just got back from a Xmas Break in Courmayeur at the Hotel Cristallo. The best Xmas my wife and I have ever had !!!

The hotel is in an ideal central location for both the shops and more importantly the cable car up to the slopes !

The hotel had a really Italian rustic charm which we both found to be a pleasant change to the 'sterile' environment which one often finds when travelling away. The 'hosts' at the hotel were very friendly and informative, from getting passes for the lifts to getting a knee brace for my sprain and booking taxis etc ( THANKS KATIE ! :-) My fault for learning to snowboard at 36 !!!!

The food was excellent and offered a varied menu which often left ourselves and fellow guests pondering over the choice for what seemed an eternity with so many delicious things on offer, coupled with a very respectable range of house wines with the meals.

Overall the staff at the Cristallo were superb, it was even a pleasure paying my bar bill to Ed the accountant !

I am sure we will be back, a really nice atmosphere in the hotel and we have both made many new friends during our week stay.

Would thoroughly recommend it !

If booking boarding private boarding lessons we can recommend the Schule di Ski, I am sure they are all fantastic BUT if you are fortunate to book either Massimo (Max) or Roberto you are really lucky, both really nice guys and very very patient and friendly, made falling on my backside a pleasure ! Oh, and I can now board ! THANK YOU GUYS !

IzzyUK

PS Thank you Claudia :-) You know who you are ! Ciao
