This is not what I expected of a 4* hotel. The entrance is on a pedestrianised street (which you could easily walk past - just a pair of large wooden doors and a plaque on the wall). There is no visible front desk as you enter, just a hallway in which you will find a lift around to the right. On arrival at around 1600, we headed for what we thought was reception, but all doors were controlled by room key card, which we did not have at that point, so we could only ring the bell - we tried several times but got no response. Eventually, we tried at the spa downstairs...rang the bell again several times. We were about to ask at one of the shops downstairs when someone appeared at the Spa desk and let us in!
The room, particularly the bathroom was fairly small (why do the Italians insist on installing bidets even if there is insufficient room for one!). In places it was designed more for style than practicality. However, the bed was extremely comfortable with the very considerate choice of soft/firm pillows (a la Holiday Inn). Robes and slippers were also provided, plus there was a capacious in-room safe which would comfortably accommodate a large laptop with room to spare. An LCD TV hung on the wall, although we found very few non-Italian channels (and none in English). There was a small balcony, but no view to speak of, however, for a city centre hotel, the room was refreshingly very quiet.
Breakfast was a very modest affair, although fresh strawberries were on offer over the weekend. Choice was limited but quality was generally good (no hot food).
The best feature of this hotel by far is its location though: about 15 mins walk to the station, 5 minutes to the Scrovegni Chappel, 10 minutes to the Cathedral and a further 5 or so to the Prato della Valle and surrounding points of interest. For this position alone I would suggest considering this hotel, but if you decide to book, make sure you call ahead so that there is someone around to meet you on arrival!
