“A great Rick Steves pick”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

My wife and I spent four nights at this small hotel. It is well located in the heart of old Padua. The staff speak English, are friendly, and they are helpful. Our room was clean. And we enjoyed the breakfast each morning. We were very pleased with the location because of the ambience, as well as being in walking distance to everything. An extra benefit is the hotel's proximity to the daily farmers' market.

Room Tip: We are in our 60's, so a good night's sleep is important to us. This is a university town w...

Very nice hotel and very well located. We walked to everything very easily. The staff were very helpful. Would definitely stay again. Enjoyed the University library tour and the students and their parents returning to school.

I'm in the Marines and have been all over the world, plus - we are a "been there, done that" kind of couple, with 44 countries under our belt, so we like to think there is some credibility to this review. The Hotel Majestic Toscanelli was in a word - perfect. Attentive, available, personable, and extremely helpful staff. Charming, comfortable, and well appointed room - and a luxuriously comfortable bed (especially by European standards) with amazing sheets... Perfectly situated for easy walking access to all Padova sites, with numerous high quality restaurants within a less-than-5-minute walk. The train station, the farthest point we walked to, was less than 20 minutes by foot, and St. Anthony's was less than a 15 minute walk (and those are both on the ends of the city center)...everything else was literally minutes away, especially when you get the feel for the city. Great breakfast... Really can't say enough good things about this hotel - start to finish, a tremendously pleasant stay - honestly felt sad leaving. Thank you for everything, Mario and everyone else at the hotel...truly an amazing experience!

A great location in the center of the city with spacious rooms and large bath. Staff was very helpful and eager to help us find food and shopping. Did not pay the extra for breakfast but it is close to many options on the close by plazas.

This hotel is just fabulous. It has history, is in the centre of the old city, has parking, a lovely bar, great rooms. Actually there was one thing that could be improved ... Motion sensors for the lights in the bathroom. At night it is a bit of a shock to be met by the lighting. But it is such a lovely hotel.

Please see my review of the Hayk Hotel, Cologne for relevant personal information.
I arrived in Venice this morning after having spent four days in Padova, during which time I stayed at the Toscanelli.

The location of the hotel is excellent. It needs to be understood that the historic centre of Padova is quite a way removed from the railway station save for the Scrovegni Chapel and the Musei Civici (Town Museums), both of which are essential sights and are within comfortable walking distance of the station. Because of this consideration, it is essential to be within easy reach of a tram stop on the excellent tram line that runs through the city from north to south. In order to reach the Toscanelli, walk out the front of the railway station. Across from it is a kiosk selling tickets. Take the tram in the direction "Sud". Go through these stops: Trieste; Eremitani (the stop for the Scrovegni Chapel); Ponti Romani; and get off at the next stop, Tito Livio. Do not cross the street. With your back towards the tram line , turn right and walk a very short distance to an arcade called Galleria Storico : it runs beneath a tall building and it is easy to walk past it. Turn into that gallery and walk its short length. That brings you to Via 8 Febbraio. Turn left and cross the street. Walk ahead to the next cross steet, Via S Martino and Solferino. Turn right and keep walking ahead. The Toscanelli is on the corner of this street and Via del Arco. The whole distance is level and can be covered, even pulling wheeled luggage, in ten minutes or thereabouts of comfortable walking. Many of the principal sights are within minutes of walking from the hotel. Those that are further afield can be reached easily by tram from Tito Livio.

The hotel is very well presented. My room was on the first floor. It was ample for my needs. It was clean, comfortable, well appointed and, being at the rear of the building, was quiet at night, something that might be a problem in a room looking into the Via del Arco. It had a large double window which brought good natural light into the room. It was efficiently air conditioned. The bathroom was comfortable and well appointed. Linen and towels were changed regularly. I was very happy, both as to quality and as to price, with the shirt laundering service that I received.

Breakfast was good. There is included in the room price what is essentially a conventional continental breakfast and there are separately charged add-ons available on request. They include orange juice and cooked eggs of any description : I almost never use either, so this was not a problem for me, but it might be a problem for others. There is no restaurant as such, but there is a very pleasant bar in which it is possible to have a snack and a drink during the evening hours. There is no lack of good restaurants within easy reach of the hotel.

That brings me to the staff and I wish to pay the warmest compliment to every staff member with whom I had contact. The two ladies with whom I dealt
principally on the reception desk were unfailingly professional: courteous, considerate , helpful in response to any question asked of them, and wonderfully patient with and encouraging of my poor spoken Italian, their own spoken English being excellent. Example: this morning I had to leave the hotel before the normal time for the commencement of the breakfast service. One of the ladies of whom I have spoken, when so advised yesterday, at once volunteered to have arrangements made for me to have at least a light breakfast before departure. I said that coffee and croissants would be ample, but when I went to the breakfast room this morning, the maid had already laid out the normal buffet. She felt the container in which the coffee was brewing, said that it was not sufficiently warm and at once brewed a special and hot jug of coffee which she served with a proper cup rather than the normal mug. As far as I am concerned, a hotel that takes that kind of trouble for a departing guest who, for all that anyone knows, might never revisit, is worth an extra star.

I conclude as I began: why is this hotel only rated by TripAdvisor reviewers in a way that brings it in at 36 out of 59. On my experience in this very week, it is worth a distinctly more enthusiastic ranking.

Would I stay there again? Yes, and without a moment's hesitation.
