Very old university (XIII century) with very important professors (Galileo Galilei was teacher in this university). Important to see inside, is the Anatomical Theatre, built on XVI century: is the first example in the world of permanent structure designed for the teaching of anatomy through the dissection of corpses.

We went to the school of Medicine and saw the anatomy amphitheater, which was fascinating. We also saw where Galileo lectured and learned about the famous teachers and student who were at this very old university. But, what really astounded me was the graduation process. Students graduate individually, not as a class. Other students sing a risqué chant, they wear a laurel wreath around their shoulders, they are publicly roasted, flour is thrown on them and the guys strip down to their underwear among other things. Quite the graduation!

Access to the quads of Padua University are free, but it is definitely worth checking out the guided tours of the inside - which includes the Grand Hall where Galileo himself lectured. Perhaps most interesting is the 16th Century Anatomical Theatre - which our guide pointed out could only be used in winter for a couple of months, because of the smell!
Our guide was very knowledgeable and delivered the tour in both Italian and excellent English (on a majority show of hands!)
Tours are limited as are the number of people they allow in any one group - but it is definitely worth making the effort.

there's only a guided tour, but it lets you oooh and aaah about how beautiful and exclusive it all was once upon a time.

If you are in Padova, stop visiting so many clothes and shoe shops and visit Galileo Galilei's Catedra, in the Palazzo del Bó. Wonderful and impressive.
