Owner description: Context provides an in-depth alternative to traditional tours. We are a network of architects, historians, art historians, and other specialists who organize over 300 different walks in 15 cities around the world. Florence teaches that art does not exist in a vacuum. Here in the churches, palaces, and other Renaissance-era institutions we encounter art in its original setting enveloped by social and political context.

We booked the Ecology of Venice tour. Our docent Luca, an oceanographer, was an exceptional guide. Knowledgeable, personable, prepared. The pace was really good. The tour was only to last 2 hours but he worked with us for 3+ hours. Luca shared many technical details that held our interest. We were interested in the environmental side of this water based city [my son has a 2 year global water research class], and he really held our attention. We even had a quick pitstop at a wonderful cichetti bar and the docent paid for our beverages and snack. This ContextItaly tour was the highlight of our Venice vacation.
One can only hope that other ContextItaly tours are this good!

I only had a day and a half to show Venice to my 20 year old son after a ski trip.
We have used Context in many different cities and our docent for our morning walk was brilliant. We learned a huge amount about the City, the reality of life in modern Venice and a great sense of what makes this p,ace so special.
Her recommendation for lunch was spot on.

Booked the Grand Canal boat tour not knowing what to expect. I couldn't have been more pleased. They chartered a Classic wooden water taxi to not only tour the Grand Canal, but you got a chance to see smaller canals. Erika was our tour guide and you could sense her pride in her city. I left the tour with a better understanding of the historical roots of this great city.

We did the Daily Life in Renaissance Venice with Susan and enjoyed it immensely. It was a wonderful combination of personal information and education in art history. We also did the Dorsoduro tour with Matteo. This was one of their "Tours in the public interest", which only cost 5 Euros per person. It too was excellent, and given their usual prices (which we did not mind paying), it is an incredible bargain. They seem to have them in several cities and not just in Italy; be sure to check if there is one in the cities you are visiting. If so, don't miss the opportunity.

We used Context Tours in both Venice and Rome. The first thing I will say is their Docent's really do know their stuff. We booked a private tour in Venice, and i communicated with them in detail in advance what we were looking for. Our guide was extrememly knowledgable, but was very focused on her area of expertise (art). We made it clear in our communications with the company and with her that we had our two adult children with us (ages 24 and 26), and wanted more focus on what life would have been like during high times in Venice. She spent some time discussing this, but clearly was most interested in showing us different artwork in the museum she took us to.

I think they do a great job and are much more knowledgable than most others in the tour business. I would have liked the tour to be a bit mor focused on what we asked for however, than what the Docent was interested in professionally, and if that Docent could not address our interest, they should hae switched them to someone more fitted to our groups request.

All this being said, we did get a good tour.
